I don't know if this counts as anime due to the fact that it's american made. But, is anyone looking forward to this movie?
Astro Boy CGI movie
-
-
I kinda am, the art somewhat resembles the original (aside from their eyes shrinking.) What annoys me is the fact they got rid of the finger laser for two hand blasters.
-
I love Tezuka so I'm gonna watch the shit out of this when it comes out in theaters.
-
I've seen the trailer. It could be good. I never watched/read the original Astro Boy, but I know how insanely popular it is. I'll wait for the reviews and fan reaction.
-
Seeing how anime adaptations are bombing lately..hopefully this does well, i'm looking forward for that Gatchaman cgi movie…if it ever comes out.
-
i'm intrigued, but a little weary. i'll see it when it comes out.
(didn't we have a thread for this already?) -
This post is deleted!
-
It was recently announced at Comic-Con that Samuel L. Jackson and Charlize Theron have cameos in the film.
-
Sorry for double posting and bumping buuuuuuuuuuuuut:
-
that's not astro boy. that looks like every other 80's show they've dug outta the grave and tried to bring back to life. (yes i realize astro was earlier. same deal)

HOW SO?!
-
Did you even Watch the trailer??
-
-
have you ever seen the original astroboy?
-
have you ever seen the original astroboy?
Of course, not all adaptations have to be exactly like the original. I mean One Piece has a few differences here and there. (Not counting filler)
-
Not that I've really ever seen or read Astro Boy, but who the hell is that little 90's dyed-hair girl?
I have a feeling she's not from Astro Boy at all.
-

No, she's a new character named Cora.
-
Wait just saw the trailer and it looked like Astro Boy but it's not like Astro Boy
-
finally. someone who understands
-
I saw a trailer for this when I went to see another movie, and I gotta say, I'm looking forward to it.
…but what's this? No finger laser? Man that's practically a trademark of Astro Boy's! (In my opinion, anyway...)
I haven't seen the original anime or read the original manga, and I only saw parts of a few episodes of the few-years-old anime remake that was on FoxBox a while back..
But I LOVED the gameboy advance game, Astro Boy: Omega Factor. To be more accurate, it should be called Osama Tezuka's Masterpiece, because they practically take a bunch of random characters from Tezuka's animes and put them into one game that centers around the Astro Boy universe.
And, somehow, they actually made a good story out of that.Oh and did I mention that the game was made by Treasure? Ya, go play it. Now. (Good luck finding it, you slacker)
-
First, I'm a big fan of Astroboy. Now this is to say, I am a fan of the original manga and Tezuka. Otherwise Astroboy is just an IP.
Now, when thinking of this film, I do no not expect it to "fulfill" Astroboy, like any adaptation, the original can only stand as true. The matter is, does it carry the spirit of Astroboy?… But more importantly; is it even a good movie? That's what I look for.
I don't know, the trailers aren't very good, And I don't think this will be a good movie, by all indications. :(
-
it looks more like that stupid CG chipmunk movie. barf
-
I just saw a trailer for this.
WHAT THE FUDGE??
How the heck did this get funding?!
-
whos the voice of astro?
anyways..film looks cool.
-
The voice actor sounds really gay, but whatever. It looks really good, though I did not expect it so soon.
-
You know, I really thought this movie had potentiatl. I really did. I thought it could have at least been a decent adaptation of the Osamu Tezuka classsic that we all know and love.
And then I saw the machine gun butt.
(Eh, truth be told, it may still be possible to pull it off with just the one butt joke, but I'm not getting my hopes up)

But Astro Boy has always had the machine gun butt? I know for a fact he had it in the '80s series, the 2003 series and the Omega Factor game. I only watched the '60s series on Adult Swim and can't remember if he had the MGB in it. I mean it was a single joke and it is targeted for kids anyway, but he has had the machine gun for a LONG time.
I am definitely going to see it as I'm a big Astro Boy fan. It should be a fun watch regardless.
From the trailer, no idea who the girl who is his friend is supposed to be, must be just a new addition. I am a bit bothered that Tenma appears to be a kind loving father, I like him as the cruel asshole he was meant to be, but the '80s series sorta did that too.
I still just want an anime version that follows the Omega Factor storyline. That game is amazing and really ties nearly all of Tezuka's works into its folds.
-
I should find and download Omega Factor now. I was interested in the game back then, but never got around it.

Okay, truth time. I haven't actually watched the Astro Boy cartoon (any of them) or read the manga in depth. Which basically means I haven't really seen hardly any of it. I just didn't think that the original Astro Boy would actually have a machine gun butt.
And with that I'll leave this thread with head hung low in shame.
-
My friends bought me the manga with the butt gun on the cover as part of a birthday gift cause they thought it was funny. (i didn't know before that either)

I don't know, seeing the trailer… I've got faith. I think it'll be an alright movie. I don't know if it's going to fulfill us fans of Astro Boy, but I don't think it's going to be a trainwreck.
Though, no Astro Boy remake can surpass Pluto.
-
I just finished Omega Factor. Nice storyline it had there, though the final boss was a bit…. weird.
-
What was wrong with Garon as the final boss?
-
He seemed a bit less challenging or cool than Pluto or Sharaku and Mask.
-
@Corsair:

So incredibly true.
-

I guess I can understand that. On Hard mode, I had the most difficulty with level 8-1, you couldn't take more than one hit of damage or you were finished. The gauntlet match always screwed me at the Artificial Sun (speaking of which, I think I saw it in the trailer for the movie!) or Carabs, since they both crowd the screen.
Pluto was hard until I figured out the simple dash through his body weakness that makes him a cakewalk even on hard. Atlas isn't that bad. Sharaku with Death Mask made for a good finish, but I liked Garon. And he was hard as hell for me on Hard.
Speaking of Urasawa's Pluto, does it have an anime adaptation? I'm reading the manga by Viz, up to v4, and I really like the changes it is adding. Don't know why it is so centered on Geshict though, it could make sense with Atom as the main anyway. I really liked how some of the robots, especially Astro, are basically undiscernable from humans.

what the hell is pluto exactly?
-
Pluto is a manga by the guy that did 20th Century Boys, and Monster with character's from Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. The robot boy Americans know as Astro is called by his real name, Atom, in the fan translation on OneManga. I don't know if Viz kept his real name or not though, but I am really tempted to buy it.
-
I'll check it out. It looks like it stays pretty close to the anime. Something you don't see very much.
-

Yes, Viz' translation uses Atom. And I do enjoy reading the Viz release, it's a much higher quality release compared to their SJ titles. Pluto's quality is closer to Vagabond (Viz Signature series).
I recommend buying the books.
-
Yeah, they looked really nice. I flipped through the story with the old man and the super weapon robot that wanted to learn how to play music.
And was reminded how slow things take to load just one page when I'm reading on those damned sites.
Someone, make a movie of Pluto instead.
-
I think it looks pretty good, I don't know what the problem is. Yes, I've seen the original Astro Boy…what did you want them to do with a brand new modern movie? I don't get it.
However, I'm much more looking forward to the Gatchaman movie they're making. The trailer nearly made me cream my jeans, like totally. But I'm actually a Gatchaman fan.
-
the problem is the same problem with the chipmunk movie. It just ain't the same. they're ruining our childhood memories.
Just make something new. Don't steal an already made character and write your own story for it. Actually, this also reminds me of that live action japanese spiderman show. It looks like spiderman, but it ain't. :\
-
I'm guessing no one looked at this.
-
I'm guessing no one looked at this.
I lol'd at the Osamu Tezuka cameo at 1:17.
Or what I can only assume was supposed to be him. It looked like him.
Still have complete confidence.
-
The Japanese trailer seems to hide a lot of the suck that the English version didn't bother to hide.
-
I had a pretty good childhood with Astro among many things, even though I barely understood what I watched as a kid. I don't really mind altered adaptions all that much, just as long as the spirit and style remains true enough for the younger generation to enjoy.
I have faith I'll enjoy this one.
-
Seeing as most of the animes made up new scripts for the majority of their episodes, I cannot see a problem with the movie taking a different spin. I think its the anime fans habit of not trusting in American hands, regardless of nothing terrible appearing in the trailer. Honestly, there have been awful things done to Japanese stories by American writers in the past, but I try to judge everything separately.
For me, as long as this movie contains the one theme that binds all things Astro Boy, which is that all life, robot or human, regardless of race, is equal, then I will be happy with the film.
-
Roger Ebert seems to find it a good movie.
I'm still going to see it, seems to be an ok movie.
-
When you watch the trailers and it doesn't seem totally awful, chances are it's going to be at least slightly entertaining.
I saw the trailer and got excited, which was more than I could say for DB, Speed Racer or even Transformers.
So, I will probably enjoy myself. Even if I'm the only person in the theatre.
