Chapter 550 "Marine Headquarters" Discussion
-
-
As if we needed to wait until now to figure out the DoFlamingo was… ermmm... flamboyant.
-
So Blackbeard managed to beat The Pirate Kings son? You think this is the real reason why sengoku allowed him to join the shichibukai so easily?
-
Has anyone seen my jaw? It fell off.
Only Oda, man. Only Oda can have us completely believing one thing then completely twist it around later. And it's not completely without logic, either. Yeah, Ace's mom carrying a baby for 20 months is a bit of a stretch, but these are Ds we're talking about here, people. Ds defy reality.
It certainly changes things though. The possibility of Dragon showing up just fell to single digits, although I'd still bet on Whitebeard showing. Whitebeard doesn't leave a man behind.
I'm still wrapping my mind around this. This is why I avoid spoilers. I mean DAMN!
-
I got the vibe from this chapter about Marine vs WB like that Japan forces were about bombing Hawaii on WWII…..
-
so did ace really know gol d roger was his father
if he did know i respect him for not letting it go to his headhope ace doesn't die
-
@The:
May be it is like that:

And IMO, we should stop arguing about this thing.
So Don Flamingo is really really huge or something?
edit: Yeah, I checked. It does kinda work now…

http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/525/02/
O.O I reread it … its CRIMINAL.... NOT CRIMINALS... unless its a mistranslation/error... Ace is definitely referring to one person.
Japanese has no concept of plurals except for outright stating the number of people/things, and the suffix -tachi.
And ROUGH or not, someone that "knows" Japanese should know that, Urouge.
In other words, ladies and gents, what Ace said (after reflecting on this chapter) was probably CRIMINAL**S** and not CRIMINAL.
-
That perspective still doesn't work, because then Moria's foot and the ground would be elevated higher on the page. The explanation's simple, Oda fudged up. It happens to the best of us.
Doflamingo is still supoosed to be big regardless, though.
-

WHERE IS THE RUG THAT WAS UNDER ME

I've said time and time again that my Japanese sucks and not to take it too seriously, I never say anything about Japanese without first explaning that I am by no means an ideal source. I only put together a trans in the spoiler thread because nobody else was doing it (and said when I did it that it was only meant to be temporary until an actual translator could get to it), and it served its purpose alright, I think. But yes, I am aware of that, it's not quite that bad. I'm sorry if my 4 am arguments are a bit incoherent, especially on topics that I'm not well versed in. I haven't committed some sin or anything, have I?
-
I need to use the E word this time: this chapter was EPIC!
I know everyone is spamming this word nowadays, but it fits this chapter perfectly. Oda outdid himself (he did it with Duval's identity too, but it was a completely different thing XP)
So Boa is really that big? I remember I thought it was really weird in a chapter but someone said it was just a matter of perspective. But now we can see she really is huge (maybe the perspective helped a bit, but she is like 4 times the height of that marine guy… it's not only a matter of angle).
What is with Oda now? It's like every new strong (or simply midly strong) character needs to be at least 3 meters tall. -
Now all i can think of is what Ace is going to say for his final words, it has to be something rivaling his fathers =D.

-
So, if Ace's mother died right after giving birth to him, and his father is Roger, how exactly are he and Luffy related again?
-
Don't die Ace ;_;
I still think there is a chance for Dragon to show up. I mean you'd think that if the gov't is thrown into total chaos that would be a good chance for the revolutionaries to get some shots in?
So, if Ace's mother died right after giving birth to him, and his father is Roger, how exactly are he and Luffy related again?
I still strongly think they are related somehow.
Going back to Ace's convo with Garp, he DOES say "WE" have the blood of that global scale criminal flowing through our veins.
This totally makes me think, if Ace knew who his father was AND he was referring to him and the "we" was him and Luffy that they were STILL related somehow. Perhaps cousins or relatives. They may not be brothers but they still have the D blood.

This post is deleted!
-
Hahahah. Luffy is so outmatched right now. XD
who gives a fuck he still gonna go in there fighting
-
Garp took Ace to Fuschia Village to be raised along his grandson Luffy, like brothers. What's the big mystery here.
Going back to Ace's convo with Garp, he DOES say "WE" have the blood of that global scale criminal flowing through our veins.
He never said they were related to the same guy. From stephen's translation:
Ace: Whether we knew it, or liked it… or not... Luffy and I both...
..have the blood of an international criminal mastermind running in our veins. We'd never wind up as Marines... -
This chapter is nice and all, but there's one thing that I can't help but regret: if Ace is Roger's son and was born so long after his death, then there's now one thing that's sure: Luffy is not Roger's son :'( (sill had hope :s)
-
It's quite obvious he can't be Roger's son but then why does he still look A LOT like him? There be a mystery~
-
So, if Ace's mother died right after giving birth to him, and his father is Roger, how exactly are he and Luffy related again?
I don't know. He can think
1. that Dragon is his father.
2. or calling Luffy as brother like he is calling WB fatherbut 2 things are confusing me.
1. he said both have blood of a criminal.
2. Garp said He is like he is -
Luffy being Roger's kid was kinda ruled out waaaay back.
There's always a chance of Garp and Roger being related in some way, which would make Ace and Luffy cousins in one form or another, but I think we can rule out them being blood brothers now. Roger died before Ace was born, and Ace's mom died in childbirth. So they can't be brothers paternally or maternally.
Awww, Ace is an orphan.

Well, isn't that good news?
This is what I like most about Oda. He deviates from the norm and creates twists that blows your mind in an awesome way.
It's quite obvious he can't be Roger's son but, then why does he still look A LOT like him? There be a mystery~
Hmm, not really. Look closely at Ace's and Roger's face. See the resemblance?
-
what's the deal with the flatscreen TV broadcasts i swear in OP timeframe technology hasn't advanced that far
or are they using image dials or some other sort of skypiean tech? -
Don't know if this has been posted before but….
! Hay guise
Yay or Nay?
Gotta say I loved this chapter, the Admira'sl and Shichibukai spread were the best even though it was from a weird perspective/error on the Shichibukai part, doesn't really bug me anyways. Can't wait for next chapters. -

Nah, Luffy is Roger's clone made by Vegapunk. Yeah you heard me.
But really, all this discussion about perspective. Haven't you ever seen a wide angle lens? It's clearly not a normal angle but it is also clear because it is completely established that both Mihawk and Boa are normal sized. It's just that they are drawn into the panel with a perspective that makes them look larger and very possibly to be able to give them the same sense of weight and importance as the other larger schichibukai.
I don't see it as an unintentional mistake at all. If anything, he could have let that Marine out because it's confusing, but in the frame of a wide angle lens kind of shot it could work like this.
-
Whats throwing off the Shichi spread is actually Oda's use of grey tone. Its usually used to help force something into the immediate foreground, to add depth. This time around however, its used on the MIDDLE ground characters to take the focus off of them. If this was colored up normally, Mihawk and Hancock would be in the immediate foreground and pretty dark.
Example below. By giving them a second tone and breaking up the fore, middle and background, its should be a bit more obvious how this works. (And their feet ARE in front of the horizon line on the ground, while everyone else's is behind it. Its subtle, but its there.) the soldier behind them is closer to the camera than the greyed out soldiers on the left.
Again, its Oda's use of grey that's throwing this off, rather than the drawing, because its messing with the depth of field. (Usuall the foreground is dark.)
Gotta remember, Kuma and Moria are both HUGE, and Flamingo is a decent size too.
-
If Oda had just left out the Marines there probably wouldn't be any confusion.
Have to wonder why Doflamingo's resting his foot on air though. Ah well, it's Doflamingo.

Whoa, never noticed that. That's some informative observation you have there. Thanks a lot.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I suppose he left of the grey tone to make it look as if the all of the Shikibukia was one armada, but the single grey ton on the marine in front of them kinda throws it off.
Yeah, maybe it the marine should have been left out if Oda was going for something like that.
-
Nah, Luffy is Roger's clone made by Vegapunk. Yeah you heard me.
I didn't want to say it but that is exactly what I was thinking.
If that's the answer I'll really facepalm.
We need the next chapter now, besides discussing the angle I think everything else has been exhausted ~_~ I'm so loving this series XD
-
Too much awesome in one chapter. Totally didn't expect Ace's link to Roger plus a new D (Portgas D. Rouge) and Akainu, but everything else is just eye-candy of Team MARINE (Marine forces plus shichibukai).
I'm more curious to see a big spread of Team PIRATES (read: Luffy and gang plus Whitebeard pirates) because, frankly, even with Whitebeard's help, how the fuck are they gonna do this??? I'm inclined to think the pirates won't be enough to beat all those named, superstrong guys. Either Ace dies and they retreat or they save Ace amidst the battle god-knows-how and run for their lives.
-
roger and dragon are brothers (and garp's sons) so luffy and ace are cousins: here is the blood relation !!!!
-
I suppose he left of the grey tone to make it look as if the all of the Shikibukia was one armada, but the single grey ton on the marine in front of them kinda throws it off.
Yup,. thats whats throwing it off. Also, Oda actually showed that he knows his stuff by drawing everything to the ground, which is HARD, but he did it entirely right. Most artists would cut off the feet in a shot like that because of the difficulty, or make the foreground characters waaaay more in the foreground (to help hide detailsand not draw as much) and to make it obvious they were in the foreground.
No feet.
More foregroundey
But obviously, Oda was going for balance in the schichi, and didn't want Mihawk and Boa to be the MAIN focus, so he didn't make them huge… while he also tried to de-emphasize the fodder soldier. which is of course, is what throws everyone off.
Donflamingo however, is huge and like 9 feet tall.
Also, Moria looks awesome in this shot. -
I wonder if it's really Whitebeard who's making the patrol ships disappear. Imean, if he was so close, why hasn't he allready attacked?
Maybe the epicness will rise to max level and WB has teamed up with the 4th Yonkou, and both of them are going to attack at the same time from 2 sides…
nah, not gonna happen (too bad) -
If Oda had just left out the Marines there probably wouldn't be any confusion.
Have to wonder why Doflamingo's resting his foot on air though. Ah well, it's Doflamingo.
I wonder, could it be another foreshadowing of his power? Think Air Air Fruit. It allows him to control the air around him to force movements and rest his feet upon.
Hope not though, cause I'm already using a similiar power to that in a book of my own. :ninja:
-
Epic plot twist aside, I'd like to take a moment to highlight something.
We now have our very first confirmed female D in canon. Portgas D. Rouge. claps It's about time, Oda! (now the question is, did she have freckles?)
-
now its the time for ace to reveal that mustache that runs in his blood
-
roger and dragon are brothers (and garp's sons) so luffy and ace are cousins: here is the blood relation !!!!
Until we get Garp's age, going by appearances alone is making it harder and harder to prove that Roger is Garp's son. In order for it to work, Garp needs to be in his early 80s which he doesn't really look to be that old.
Or Roger needed to be in this 20s when Ace was born which we know wasn't the case.
I'm farily certain they're related, though I was wondering if Roger was actually Garp's kid brother.
Or they were just some sort of relative to each other that didn't know each other very well. Was Garp REALLY his rival or just keeping up apperances with the marines in order to hide their true relation?
I mean it's possible if he was his kid brother Garp had joined the marines and then Roger grows up to be a pirate (assuming they grew up in some BFE village not really renowned for anything) and Garp HAS to chase him. He may purposely let him go but he HAS to chase him and keep the appearnce up. If they found that Roger was related to Garp that could be huge trouble for him.
Though Garp's reactions so far don't leave much evidence for that theory either, just need some more info.
-
So we have one hundred thousand marines, hundred canons,50 ships,5 shichibukais, 3 admirals and sengoku.
Luffy is rushing in with the 2 and half lasts shichibukais with possibility of whitebeard full crew,Shank's crew,Kaito crew, Blackbeard extended crew and also dragon's revolutionary army appearingEveryone is expecting an epic battleroyal with no rules front the world eyes.
But Jango is here and will hypontise everyone in a gigantic techno funky party for days and nights…
The last one standing will be buggy and he will use cameras and tv screen to proclaim himself new pirates king in front of the whole worldBuggy still have his way...
-
what's the deal with the flatscreen TV broadcasts i swear in OP timeframe technology hasn't advanced that far
or are they using image dials or some other sort of skypiean tech?I don't see the problem with the TVs. I mean, this is a world with combat cyborgs, a ship equiped with a cola-powered lazar cannon, and a genius scientist capable of creating technology 500 years ahead of his time.
-
Another testament to how fucking beastly Whitebeard must have been back in the day is the people worrying about the outcome OF THE WORLD. Goddamn, Shirohige is 'bout to die.
-
At this rate the only way they can rescue Ace is if Whitebeard actually comes. If Ace is the decedent of Roger than having WB killed off could set him to become the next Pirate King by taking over his ship.
Thus opening a theory of the final battle between Ace and Luffy where Luffy will finally beat Ace. Though the part where Luffy mentioned about how he could never beat Ace wasn't really seen as important.
We'll see whats next.
-
Prediction:
Either Whitebeard or Shanks has someone incredibly quick on their team, who then snatches Ace away right before the swords cut his throat.
Alternatively, someone entirely unpredictable walks on the scene all calm with his Haki knocking everyone out (which I hope doesn't happen unless Oda does it really well, which he most probably will). -
Prediction:

Oda shall prove the fanon true, with the arrival of Lucky Roux.
-
Actually. Wouldn't it be something if the all these powers came together and took out the Marines. After that just before the chaos erupts, the SHs enter the New World.
-
Epic plot twist aside, I'd like to take a moment to highlight something.
We now have our very first confirmed female D in canon. Portgas D. Rouge. claps It's about time, Oda! (now the question is, did she have freckles?)
Yes, I'm not the only one excited about her!
And she most likely had freckles. They're a dominant trait so one of Ace's parents had to have had freckles and Roger doesn't.
-
She used Haki to keep Ace in.
-

Alternatively, someone entirely unpredictable walks on the scene all calm with his Haki knocking everyone out (which I hope doesn't happen unless Oda does it really well, which he most probably will).Haki doesn't work on those who are strong of will. So while a good haki blast might take out all of the fodder marines, it still leaves the big guns like Smoker, Hina, the Admirals, and the Shichibukai. Not really effective.
