What kind of filler?

As we watch this very unique series, I'm sure we noticed that there a few types of filler that have been used:

Episodes that take place in a setting/arc from the manga that at the same time includes content NOT from the manga. (Examples: During Lougetown, Alabasta, etc.)
Episodes/Episode arcs that are COMPLETLEY anime only which means (when talking about One Piece that is) it'll take place in a setting that'll most likely NEVER appear in the manga. These Episodes/Episode Arcs also take place in-between original story arcs (Examples: Millenium Dragon Arc, Rainbow Mist Arc, Post Alabasta Arc, etc.)
Mini Side Story arcs - These take place during certain story arcs in the manga, but were only shown on cover pages of individual chapters. They mostly show what happens to certain (groups of) characters after they have said their goodbyes to the Strawhats or have been BEATEN by the Strawhats (whichever came first). Only two of these arcs have been animated (Buggy's and Coby and Helmeppo's Side Story).
Back Story Fillers - These took place during Enies Lobby (before the Rocketman actaully crashes into Enies Lobby) in which they show what each individual member of Strawhats went through before actually joining).
Boss Luffy Specials - These fillers have absolutley NOTHING to do with what goes on in the anime or manga. These take place in another version of the One Piece world where the setting is a (correct me if I'm wrong) little Japanese village known as Grand Jipang. You'll also see interactions between characters that you most likley would NEVER see in the actual story. These could air anytime during the anime.

My question to you guys is, which kind of fillers would you wanna see more
Personally, I'd like to see more Boss Luffy or more animated cover storys :happy:

i say mini side story because at least they are canon.

I hate when they do the second option only because it almost assures that there will be a whiny little complaining kid following them around throughout the whole thing.

off the top of my head for one piece i can only think of apis as an example, but i bet rainbow mist and the goat island ones has some annoying kids too. But i mean look at bleach or naruto as examples of other sj series with fillers. Almost all of those sucked.

Im not gonna lie though. One Piece fillers are awesome no matter what though. They're not amazing or anything, but they are never unbearable to watch like the ones in naruto and bleach sometimes are. And then when funimation gets them they just get even better, like millenium dragon arc, funi did a great job on that

Well, not sure if they were whiny or annoying, but there were some kids in Rainbow Mist, there weren't any on Goat Island (which is on of my faves BTW )

Personally, I don't think the coverstories would make for great TV, especially since they tend to dick around a bit before actually going anywhere. Ask yourself, do you honestly want to watch two episodes of Hatchan going around performing random acts of community service?

I prefer the arcs that take place in between the canon. I'm not expecting Pulitzer Prize winning material, so I'm usually able to enjoy them unless their flaws are especially noticeable and/or annoying. The kids are a problem, but the two girls in Spa Island weren't that bad.

As for the Boss Luffy stuff, I think the novelty has worn off for me, and I wouldn't mind if they branched out into more elseworlds, like the modern day or something. Heck, I'd even welcome the tired and true ''High School AU'' scenario, because I think it could be quite hilarious.

I still think they should make a filler based on the Unlimited video game series. It would be great fanservice for all the longtime fans.

I'd like to see some of the mini stories done myself. Some NEED to be done such as Hatchi, Jango and now Goldenweek's as they actually contribute to the plot.

Apart from that. Chopperman again would be a nice welcome for a filler story or two. In fact I'd honestly say that the Chopperman episode filler we had was the best filler we've had.

Since I don't read the manga I'd like to see more cover stories.

Boss Luffy specials aren't bad, I guess. At least they don't pretend to blend in with the anime like they're actually a part of it when they clearly aren't. (Bleach is HORRIBLE with that, and it drives me up the wall to see filler characters from a filler arc 20 episodes ago still acting like they belong in the main storyline.)

As long as they don't do what they did with Bleach, the fillers won't ever bother me all of that much.

And as much as I would like to see some cover stories animated, you just gotta accept the fact that they aren't the best filler choices when it comes to ratings.

You forgot the DBZ style stretch-filler which plagued Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark. That's the worst, next to the recap fillers.

I prefer a ten episode filler arc to round it out. It's some new material to expand the OP universe, and Robin shines during filler/ the movies. G8 was pretty much some of the best filler that you can sculpt, and the Ice Hunter arc was not bad at all. That was pretty much the only instance we ever had where the Straw Hats were forced to deal with a serious Bounty Hunter.

I voted for Boss luffy, but other "alternate storys for the known characters" is what I realy like as filler, like the Chopperman one, a full chapter about mugiwaraman should be inolvidable!!

Remember the amnesia arc was based off the "Ocean's Dream" video game.

As far as Unlimited games go I'm not sure that would adapt into a good filler arc since it's mainly the Strawhats running around an island defeating past enemies.

While I do kinda sorta agree with Crosswords on the "Boss Luffy" specials it still is fun to see how they incorporate the ever growing cast into that world and also that's the only type of filler that wouldn't affect the canon material. With One Piece's pacing becoming more intense in the manga stuff like this filler is needed.

This was asked a few years ago at a One Piece panel at Anime Expo. The two cover story arcs that were animated got terrible viewership. Back then, the TV audience didn't want to watch One Piece if it didn't have Luffy and the rest of the Strawhats. If there were a greater demand for it in Japan, then they would animate more.

As long as they don't do like bleach is doing lately, as in :

characters trade first blows before a mayor battle
X (where X is arbitrarily high) filler episodes of a side story with no connection whatsoever to the plot but set in the same universe
continuation of the mayor battle

Other styles go from acceptable to even good, but just don't cut something in the middle. A couple episodes to expand an arc a bit are not bad either, but with measure.

Anything but back story arcs. Espeically the edo period specials and cover stories though.

I don't get the hate for all filler. If you hate anything deviating from the original, then don't watch the cartoon at all, just stick with the original. I like the animation because it does add to what's on the page, I want to see more of what happens and more stuff that's "like" One Piece since I love it.

The outright hatred of filler seems more like some folks who don't understand what is actually worthy of criticism and a feeling of need to cast judgment somewhere.

My least favorite would have to be the episode where goat fucker Zenny uses his abacus as a skateboard during a fight. Movie 6 also had some poser shit like that, but it also had a good story.

I want to see more stuff like G8 though

Cover stories are the most logical. I'm all up for Chopperman fillers as well. They're entertaining unlike the Boss Luffy episodes.
