Ive heard six jokes already!

With Jacko ive always had cross thoughts on the subject, yeah he was a legend but at the same time he had a handful of kids sleeping over at his ranch. Eitherway I blame this on the pressure from his father and the media that prevented him having a proper childhood. Resulting in his downfall due to unproven claims.

Anyway its a shame to see such a trend setter/icon die at such an early age.

My setiments exactly, i feel that is it exactly. And either way from the outlash of celebrity sorrow and the fans in the streets, the love for him obviously outweighed the hate about those accusations.

The thing is, and this is the most irritating part for me, is that a good majority of the people fawning over now would've been making the same "whacko jacko" and paedophile jokes just two days ago. If he didn't die, and someone made a, say, Michael Jackson tribute thread, there'd be an onslaught of bad touch jokes. His death didn't make Moonwalker not happen, it doesn't revert his face to the way it used to be, it didn't eliminate the song he wrote that solely existed to complain about Tom Sneddon, and it didn't change the fact that he spent the last decade or so as a has-been, a horrifying-looking man, and the butt of everyone's jokes.

Yeah, he wrote some good songs, but this public and media onslaught over his death is getting absurd. Cable news has been talking about nothing but Michael Jackson for the entirety of the day he died. Dunno about you, but politics, healthcare, and government corrutption is a helluva lot more important than a dead singer. Congress had a moment of silence, for chrissakes! This is getting beyond silly…

He was a significant artist in music history and deserves to be respected for that. The butt of jokes or not, its completely normal for people to remember his musical contributions at his deathbed.

And the news talks about politics and health care all the time, which are both long-term issues. It makes sense if they talked about Michael Jackson (a VERY VERY famous singer) for a day after his death.

I like this song but wow, I kept it on MTV alot today to watch the little marathon of videos ((yay they played the free willy song XD)) and everytime I got in my truck it was MJ, and now they're having request hour on the oldies station my grandma left on here and its been solid MJ and Jackson 5 for quite awhile now.

I like a lot his songs but I've never been a real fan, mostly because my memories of him are as a scary white chick and the scandal. I was born too late ;_;

Here in the UK we had to listen to months coverage of her, do you know what she was famous for ? - Making a racist comment in Big Brother (A reality show) and everyone HATED her, they LOATHED her.

Then, she is diagnosed with Cancer and while that is sad, and heartbreaking for her family and that. She just suddenly became loved because she'd been diagnosed wth Cancer. (Sounds awful saying it like this)

But atleast with Michael he actually deserves all this publicity and fame, he gave 50 years of his life for his profession and hell, it wasn't even his prfoession he MADE music his life. Do you know what he was doing on the day oif his death, he was rehearsing for one of his Gigs. Without him so many others would not have emerged into the Pop world. He broke barriers.

And if you went into a room with the Jacksons and said that paying tribute
to the life of Micahel was pointless and trivial, you would not come back out.

All these Mass-Media coverage reports happen all the time, but atleast with Michael he truly deserves it. You may think it irritating, but it would be even more irritating if someone who DIDN'T deserve this kind of respect and publicity WAS getting it.

You say 20 years, yet even in the past 10 years he has had successful albums such as Invincible (not up to par with his initial success, but 10x Platinum is impressive by most standards.)

20 years ago he was still becoming increasingly popular and arguably reached the peak of his fame a few years past the '20 year' mark.

Aside from that, when someone who did contribute dies despite a 'lull', their accomplishments in life are generally recognized. And in this case it's Michael Jackson, one of the best most well known figures in general who accomplished a lot from the mid/late-60s for many decades. I think it's a positive thing that "the media"/"people" aren't extremely short-sighted and live only in 'current trends.' And I think you might greatly underrate Michael Jackson's status for the large part of many people's lives (not everyone was born in the mid-90s).

Though I doubt this is all that relevant to your point (you don't like seeing someone extraordinarily famous on the news after his death so you feel justified in complaining), just wanted to point something out.

A somewhat more poignant are recent example would be Mike Tyson. He was convicted or rape, he did many dislikable things and in general he might not be extremely 'well liked.' Yet even now without his death, if you talk about his boxing career, it would largely be positive. Ali is similar to an extent, despite all his trash talking and down-talking of many others (such as the infamous Frazier dispute), he is regarded positvely. I'm sure you could get into the same scenario with Elvis among countless others, MJ is hardly unique (though many will still label him a pedophile despite lack of evidence just 'gut feeling' based on his strangeness). Some people are able to seperate peronal flaws (being the butt of many jokes in MJ's case) from their accomplishments often enough.

I agee. Its normal for people to remember the glorious first 40 years of MJ's life rather than his last 10 years.

Just because he didn't die before he became involved in all this controversy, doesn't mean we shouldn't respect him for all of his musical contributions now that he's dead.
