Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of “Green Lantern,” getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.
Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.
The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.
Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.
Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti. Reynolds’ reps at UTA are working out his deal.
The actor will next star in “Buried,” a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

Well, I guess he looks alright, but I can't really see him as Hal Jordan…oh, and this movie will be out in the same time frame as Deadpool...

Guess this means that he won't be playing Wally West, I know he was trying for that role too.

…nope.

Script's been done for a while, though, with only minor revisions. I know of a lot of the general stuff in the movie though (wonder who's playing Alan Scott?).

I have mixed feelings about this, but none of the feelings think that Ryan is a bad choice for GL OR Ryan being both GL and DP.

I just realized Deadpool has the same initials for Dr. Pepper. Another reason Deadpool is the man.

Reynolds has pretty much confirmed that Deadpool will break the 4th wall in the movie, so maybe we'll get a GL plug.

I'm a little surprised that he landed GL considering he's ALREADY Deadpool. I can see him as Deadpool, GL is a little more of a stretch.

As for the Flash, he was vying for the role of Wally (which would have been a good choice) but the movie couldn't get off the ground.

Air Force, not military. He only was a test pilot/mechanic. But in current continuity, John Stewart was a marine (who actually had military training and saw "action").

Hal's WHOLE LIFE is about flying. IF they can restrain Reynolds some and keep him serious, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Hal is definitely in the military. And was a pretty roughneck fighter pilot in some comics. But he never acted like a stereotypical "military guy" as he was always somewhat of a jokester and playboy.

Hal seemed to mostly be working for private companies rather than the Air Force since he wasn't in it very long.

Besides the initial issues, the only frame of reference I have as Hal being a pilot is in the current series because he mostly was in uniform in all of the old issues I have read so I've only ever seen him kill a few people and if you go off of how he was in New Frontier, well….

This seems like Ryan Reynolds, though:

Yeah Hal was only in the miltary so he could fly and he got himself (on purpose) dishonorably discharged. And that only been added a few years ago. Most of his history has been as a test pilot.

Hal is extremely cocky (he leave his ring in his locker while flying experimental test craft to make sure he doesn't lose his edge) and a charmer.

Hal Jordan was Blandy McBlanderson, captain of blandness.

The cartoons had John Stewart and Kyle Rayner, both of whom had actual personality.

The average person is only going to know about those two, unless they happened to already be fans of the original comics in the first place.

Kyle had an actual personality, and actually did interesting things with his ring.

Hal's only memorable character moments were when he was bro-ing it up with Ollie Queen or Barry Allen… the latter who they also brought back for no reason in particular.

Barry Allen's back for the same reason as Hal- Geoff Johns has a massive boner for the Silver Age.

Well…..yes and no... Most people don't care or like Green Lantern. I used to think he was stupid and boring. Granted, I knew of Hal, John, and Kyle, but that was because I actually noticed their differences.

I haven't seen the forums, but i'm guessing most people are assuming there's only one Green Lantern that they remember from the Justice League animated series.

Also, even if the Deadpool and Green Lantern movies are around the same time, shouldn't he look different if they're keeping to Deadpool's actual appearance.

I grew up watching and collecting action figures of THAT Green Lantern, so seeing a black version in Justice League was weird to me. But maybe i'm just old school.

Tbh other than Hal and Guy Gardner i barely know anything about the others.

Honestly, I was expecting something a bit more triumphant considering Hal's personality, but there was something…sagely about the way Reynolds performed the line there. I'm not sure if that was just for the occasion, but nonetheless it was well done.

My only issue with the movie so far is that it doesn't feel like "Hal Jordan" as much as it feels like "Ryan Reynolds". But the same thing is true with Iron Man. I don't see "Tony Stark", I see "Robert Downey Jr".

I like Ryan..as a person..so I'm not really complaining all that much.
