What are the better new anime out there? Somehow it seems to me the best anime is not really the most recent.

I haven't seen "Genius Party" yet for instance, is it any good?

I'm also interested in "Michiko to Hatchin", cyber punk Thelma & Louise -ish.

      Has anyone seen "Real Drive"?

      And "Skycrawlers" maybe.

! I checked and didn't really find a thread on new anime, but if I missed the one it should be merged of course

I'd recommend Eden of the East. It's pretty good. Also, if you haven't seen Code Geass yet, watch that.

No, though it is much more mystery-oriented than I had originally expected.

Could definitely have benefited from a full twenty-five episode length instead of eleven though. It's not bad by any means, but since the show's conclusion is going to be in a theatrical movie instead of a TV episode, the last episode is probably going to feel pretty unsatisfying.

I've seen Michiko to Hatchin and it was indeet of quite high qualtiy. But there's hardly anything cyber in there. And punk? Well maybe a bit. MtH is more like "Road trip through Brasil" x "Girls with guns" 😁

I figured I.G. would go the lackluster route; it's been their karma for the past three or so anime.

Actually, for a show that's only 11 episodes long it moves fairly slowly.

I've always liked Ergo Proxy, Ghost Hound, and Mushishi. I found each of these to have a kind of unique charm. They all would fall into the category of newer animation I'm pretty sure.

And Ergo Proxy was also a Manglobe production. (Michiko to Hatchin)

                            Hey you! Let's party!

Ergo Proxy is a very nice anime, if you can stand animation in dark tones and a complex, hard to follow, main plot. When you see Ergo Proxy it is usually easy to grasp what's happening at the moment but you have to put some effort into it if you want to get the greater picture. It's like a puzzle and you better not miss a piece of it. Not your "watch it in two days" anime! 😛

Also if you like cyberpunk and Ergo Proxy you might as well take a look at Ghost in the Shell. It's already a few years old but for me it's one of those milestones that started modern animation ^^

I think the last new anime that made me go "wow" was Kurozuka, although its complexity is bound to divide opinions.

Darker than Black was cool, I'd like to see it in high quality on a big screen again. I thought the ending was alright.

Yeah I liked Ergo Proxy, and GITS, what can I say, classic. Toei sponsored an exhibition at some conference and they showed a HIGH quality screen shot of GITS 2, a shot from when they fly into that incredibly rich city. Looked amazing.
Do you know any others that have the same formula as GITS and Ergo Proxy?

A re-make of Neon Genesis Evangelion is coming out this year I think, 3 or 4 movies to cover the series.

Futuristic world, dark or normal colors, quite refined story and modern animation you want… Mhm you dig mecha anime you said? Then I would suggest Eureka Seven and RhaXephon. Both are set in a future that is high tech and considerably different form our world today. Eureka Seven story is good but also has some unnecessary twists. The 50 ep. would have fit in 25 ep. as well! But we are at a One Piece Forum so that shouldn't be too much. Once you've seen it everything should be clear to you. RahXephon is way harder. Harder than Ergo Proxy I would say. I've read an interpretation afterwards and it was like reading an interpretation of Tolstois War and Piece. I do admit that I saw RahXephon too fast and only once though. Consider RahXephon a challange to your powers of comprehension while Eureka Seven is nice entertainment with a well devised story.

So where's the catch? Well in contrast to EP and GitS they are both Shounen. Eureka main charakter tends to be a little Sasuke from time to time and RhaXephon one fails at recognizing love when it stands in front of him. But if you could watch NGE I recommend those two series to you. I couldn't watch NGE 😛

Also if you try them make sure you get good encodings. I've seen horrible ones out there. RhaXephon is from 2001-2002, Eureka from 2005. For neither of them there's HD available but make sure you don't load the interlaced ~180 MB files with the clock in the top left corner. Or are you one of those noble beings who buy the DVDs hit or miss ^^

I wish they would make an anime out of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. That's something you would like. And so would I 😛

Yeah, I agree that Eureka SeveN should've been twenty-five episodes. It was a good series overall, but I felt that the beginning half was rather draggy and boring. Overall, the show was on marijuana half the time, appropriate considering it's inspirations, it was quirky, but fun, with some rough patches along the way.

The ending set me off though. The moon is not a goddamn tree trunk for you to carve your names in for people to see for all eternity!!

I've heard a lot of good things about Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, a 1990 work courtesy of Studio GAINAX, which was inspired by 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. After I finish watching the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei series I'm going to look around for it.

m00n, yes all those things are cool, but I really meant anime that have some philosophical themes running through them. NGE was interesting because it was more about the characters than the story (and the penguin closed the deal, good show🆒).
So its rather transhumanism than mecha, but I'll give Eureka Seven a try some time. RahXephon gets more recommendations by the day, sounds good.

Again, has anybody seen Shikabane Hime?
Eden of East is looking pretty good so far.

I'm gonna be the [owner of an Eee PC 1000HE in a couple of days]!!!

Oh so philosophical themes are the key point. I didn't realize! ^^ Well that kicks a lot of anime out of course. RahXephon has something of that. Copypasta from wiki:

Music, time, archetypal mystery, intrigues and romance are central elements of RahXephon's plot. The series shows clear influences from philosophy and Japanese folklore, and from Western literature such as the work of James Churchward. Mesoamerican and other Pre-Columbian civilizations have a prominent place in the cultural background of the series.

Well as it says there the show's influenced by philosophy but it is not a main point of it like in Gits 2 Innocence. Besides this I can't remember any anime with a lot of philosophy. Or do the occasional existential quotes in Black Lagoon qualify? 😆

Haha I don't know, sounds fun. Haven't seen it but existentialism and effeminate haircuts = depth 😁 Ah and the trailer looked good.

I like futuristic anime because some of them make a serious attempt to play out likely scenarios. GitS is really interesting in that perspective, I'm sure some of the ideas in it will become realities during our life time.

Someone once said to me he watches anime because its better than anything on TV. That's a pretty good quote. Thx for the recommendations😄
