S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a series of first person shooter games revolving around the meltdown of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The story itself is pretty thin but it's okay because the game itself is awesome.

There are 3 games currently out:

Shadow of Chernobyl - First in the series. Released in 2007. You play the role of "Marked One" as you traverse the zone.

Clear Sky - Prequel to SoC.

Call of Pripyat - Sequel to SoC

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is set to be released some time in 2012.

Neither, really. It's a high quality PC FPS, but since PC games aren't exactly as popular as the likes of console games, it's not that well known.

It's made by a game company in The Ukraine. I'm not sure if it's still going but you can get SoC and CoP for $10 on Steam.

I just beat SoC a few minutes ago and got the second ending of the bad set of endings. There's like 9 endings.

Been playing Call of Pripyat a lot recently and it's a lot better than SoC. First of all there's a really good weapon modification system in the game. You can do anything from put a scope mount on a gun, to adding extra rifling, to replacing the stock to make it lighter, and much more. Thing is for a lot of it you have to get extra tools for the guy doing it and the beginning mod guy is a drunk that can only do certain things if you give him enough vodka .

And there's a quick menu which allows you to put often used stuff like medpacks and antiradiation drugs so you don't have to keep going into the menu. I'm playing it vanilla at the moment since the Complete mod for it isn't out yet but I'm not really seeing a reason to get the mod. I haven't encountered any game breaking glitches, at least yet.

Go play this new game everyone, it's called Sutaakaa: Weeaboo Chronicals. The stupid US calls it S.T.A.L.K.E.R., though :getlost: . It has scantily clad Japanese chicks with big boobs and spiky hair and stuff.

Played the first one, I don't think I even got to pass to the third area, but from what I saw, I liked it a lot, and I heard you could join Freedom or Duty, which is awesome

Actually in the first game you can't join either. If you try the game crashes :/ . I accidentally did it three times .

The weird thing is there's a dialogue to join (at least for Duty) but when you click on it the game crashes. Apparently it wasn't written into the game. I was using the Complete mod as well. I think you can in CS and CoP, though.

I'm replaying Shadow of Chernobyl and trying to get the good ending this time as well. I missed a lot of stuff the first time around. I'm still having trouble keeping below the carry limit since I can't avoid looting stashes and picking up ever artifact I can find (which interestingly there are hardly any artifacts in Call of Pripyat.

Anyone play this yet? It's an amazing game.

I spent a bit of time playing the original not too long ago. I was making very nice progress, however I eventually saved during something important, left it for a while, came back… And was completely unsure of where I was. I could go on with the game, ignoring that, but I'm pretty sure it's a mission that I find myself in the middle in and I would like to complete it, if it is.

I'll tackle it sometime, but I haven't been in a STALKER mood in a while anyways.

But STALKER is very much so one of the best first person role-playing shoooter atmospheric horror survival games to come out this decade.

The role-playing aspects are fairly small, though. You don't level up like you do in RPGs, but you can equip things (suits, weapons, artifacts) that do give you certain advantages.

Clear Sky. That cruel game was hindering me from beating it with all its might. The Swamp was a first location, so it was debugged to the max. All old locs were clear. But the rape started with Red Forest- if I was not thrown out near the start of events, the save was corrupt as soon as possible. But the last time game decided to freeze at the start of Yantar. Always. That was around the 10th time I tried to get to the new locations. Every time I was playing carefully, role-playing a stalker as much as possible. But that was too much. After a year of confrontation the game won.
Hard mode- I played with .03 patch. All patches higher made game sooo laggy it was unplayable. And my system is at least ready for medium graphic.
Call of Pripyat was never played. The game is not willing to run on system that was okay for medium "on paper" requirements.
But someday I will see all those fields and towns. You just wait you bitches. I'm busting my ass for a game station as advanced as possible.

The Complete mods fix a lot of the bugs. I can understand with SoC but CoP ran better on my laptop than SoC did. I don't see how you could have any problems unless your system couldn't handle the game itself. Did you make sure to switch to static lighting instead of full dynamic?

Sakonosolo's constant bombardment of all things STALKER related has convinced me that I need to beat it. And soon.

There's ~6 bad endings and 2 good ones. I got a bad one the first time I beat SoC and this time I'm aiming for a good one. I'm not going to spoil how to do it for you because I didn't find anything telling me to do it but I'm sure there is something.

Make sure to play it with the Complete mod. It makes the graphics, AI, weather, etc much better. And it fixes bugs which is crucial.

The backstory revealed in the good ending of Shadow of Chernobyl is fascinating. I want to play Clear Sky next since it's the second game in the series and it's a prequel but it's not supposed to be as good as the other two. I'll probably take a small break anyway before starting CS.

Edit: It actually bears a passing resemblance to the book, and through somewhat of a trickle down effect, the movie now that I think about it.

Just a quick update on Stalker 2. It's apparently going to take place in and around Tunguska which at one point (I don't know the exact date) had a meteor explode over it.
