The inevitable - Anime reaches Manga discussion

Well if you're like me and keep up with both the manga as well as the anime, then you'll know how far apart they are.

If you don't keep up with both, here's a general description: The anime is nearing finish of the Sabody Archipelago Arc., and the manga is almost finished with the Impel Down Arc. (I believe)

Here is the spacing between the two

Sabody Archipeligo (10 mangas left) -> Amazon Lily (only 10 mangas) -> Impel Down (15 mangas so far)

So by adding this up, we know that the space between the two is only 35 mangas. The anime is at about manga 505, and the present manga is at 540.

Each anime incorporates at least 1-3 mangas into it, so we know what will inevitably happen.

My prediction is that the anime will go into GREAT detail of what became of the Straw Hat Pirates following being blasted off by Kuma. In the manga, it only really shows where the crew ended up. I expect about 25 filler episodes of this.

However, I'd like to hear all of your predictions. Go wild.

Also I think that after the get sent away, the anime will animate some cover stories(Like Baroque works, Eneru, maybe Hachi, possibly CP9, and the where are they now ones covering Water 7). I suppose they could also add some filler of the SHs landing at ends they went to.

Heh god I hated back in Ennies Lobby Arc when they were standing on the tower where Luffy beat Blueno looking at Robin and CP9, and everyone had their own episode with some stupid flashback. Wasted 2 months of my life.

I'm actually thinking that the reason the anime team opted not to make a 10-episode filler after TB arc (contrary to what they usually do after an arc) is that they have a "richer" filler to make yet. I bet they'll make an filler arc on what happened to other SH after they were sent by Kuma flying. Probably at least 1 episode per nakama. Good thing with this is that Oda can write brief stories which the anime team will follow for these episodes. It's like Oda himself created an opportunity for the anime team to do a good filler arc which seems to be part of the original story.

I'll support Fury283 on one thing. The chance that Rayleigh decides to tell an "extra story" about Roger is possible, that could be a filler arc in itself. I don't think they'll do that though, since the crew member stories seem to be the best place for added anime time.

We'll get entire episodes devoted to the Supernova wiping mobs of marines like they totally dragged out the auction house fight and Kidd, Law, and Luffy wrecking the marines.

No, they are fighting the Pacifista already. And while there where some short filler fights scenes it wasn't that streched.

The manga is going at a fairly fast pace while containing lots of text and different places right now. They will stick with 1:1 until we reach some kind of a boss fight that ends the current saga. Anime won't come much closer to the manga like this. Also Greg said they wrote about anime only storylineS coming up, in some Doom9 commercial. So it's likely the island fillers are what we get.

Although I think it would be pretty cool to have the anime explore the other paths of the SH exclusively, it would be annoying to force people to watch the anime.

It's pretty simple, actually.

Until we get to a fighting-heavy arc again or the pace feels slow, neither of which have been seen in the 35 chapters ahead the manga is, we can continue the 1-for-1 pacing with little bits of filler in each episode. If they keep it like this week's episode they won't hear too much complaint from us.

The fillers will be the mini-adventures of the eight other Strawhats, which I am looking forward to like no other. It's going to be fantastic from just the little bits Oda has already given us and if he guides them on the general story he'd like them to do (perhaps another reason he's been so busy lately) we'll get high-quality fillers! Even so, I'd feel better if the anime had a little more room, but there's no oppertunity for a long time for any more fillers, so we'll see.

I believe the anime sould be able to make the fight between the Straw Hats and Px-4 longer. In the manga, we only saw some key scenes and, at the end, everybody is exhausted.

As there is no time for big fillers in the upcomming 34 chapters, I would like it if they decide to make something out of the cover-stories, especially those on Barok works and maybe explain how Buggy has been captured. IMO, that would fit nicely in for the Impel down arc.

That said, I just hope that Oda won't make the adventures of the Straw Hats an anime-only thing.

About the filler: I don't think it will be on the other characters. Seems like something the manga still has to explore bit by bit. Perhaps after the Battle Royal, whenever Luffy gets his ship back and can go look for them. And who knows, maybe Robin will already be back, tagging along with Dragon who freed all the bridge workers to fight in his war.

I'd love to see the cover stories animated!! Btw, are the cover stories 'collected' somewhere, ie can you buy/download them in one piece?

I think we're going to get 1-2 minutes of filler next week about them stopping by and kicking Peterman's ass. I just noticed last night that they reached Peterman's pad at the end of the episode. In the manga we just got a small frame showing the aftermath of it.

I wonder if they'll chicken out and have a two chapter episode (512-513) or not and just slog it out and wring every last agonizing drop of drama that they can get. I'm already fully expecting them to milk the failed ''take my hand'' bit for all it's worth.

Yeah, that was annoying. Guess the silence is proof it was a joke. But since they skipped the chance to do a long filler arc after TB, the joke can end up being true.
Back on topic…seriously, 'OMG the anime's catching up the manga1!!1" was first said (by many) back in 2004 when Kokoro no Chizu premiered.

The anime has been keeping a 1:1 pace for a long time now. No need to insert filler if they keep this pace. I wouldn't expect clear cut filler until all these arcs are over, including Amazon Lily, Impel Down, and eventual Marine Headquarters arc.

I expect they'll do a faster pace than 1 to 1 if needed. They've already done it this week going 5 pages into 506. See if they'll milk the Rayleigh stuff for two episodes i guess..

I think there might be a pretty good chance this happens. I remember the Coby cover story happening while the strawhats were between islands in the Grand Line. Timing for the BW cover story might be good too, considering Impel Down.
In any case, I seriously doubt the anime will ever fully catch up to the manga. I remember a couple times in the past when it got close, but they always delayed the anime, whether that meant adding 10-20 episodes of filler, or taking 1-2 week breaks between episode airings.

Considering he said it on April 2 he's probably wondering wtf you two are thinking … maybe you forgot to adjust for time zone, since he lives in Japan. In other news, animes are not capable of going 1:1 the entire time, which is why they have filler in the first place. Sure they can slow down the pacing for a little while, but eventually they will have to do more then one chapter. In the end, this means they will start catching up and eventually something will need to be done (filler, breaks, etc.).

Dunno; depends on what happens to the crew. In some cases, yes, but there might be a couple of crew members whose stories are interjected in the middle of an episode, to keep up with real-time, if something happens that would affect the storyline after Luffy leaves ID, or if there were spoilers.

! While Franky is on his island, he finds out that Luffy broke into Impel Down and escaped with two shichibukai in order to save his brother, which would lead to his departure in order to help out his captain.

But on the whole, yes, I think this is the most likely scenario at this point. But I'm open to other ways to tell the story, as long as it works. =p

When Kuma blasts everyone, if the Anime doesn't cut to some cover story arcs, then I don't think they ever will.

It'd be the best time to insert the Baroque works one. They could start it off like this:"what else is brewing on the Grandline in this heated time of chaos?". Baroque Works is the obvious best choice for an arc. I'm sure they could squeeze in some others (and possible some filler of people to give everyone some screen time)

The anime really needs to put some serious distance between itself and the manga. I rewatched Arabasta recently, and when I saw Water 7 afterwards, it just felt so painfully slow. Having a 2chap:ep ratio again sounds fantastic, but would probably require the usage of ALL the cover stories, each strawhat getting a significant side-story on their respective islands, and perhaps a standalone filler arc after Fishman Island. Ever since Skypiea ended, the pacing has just been terrible ithis frantic attempt to prevent collision with the manga. While recent 1:1 eps have been decent due to Oda putting more and more side-material in per chapter, I don't think he can keep that up forever. What then :P

If you ask me, the pacing of the current shabondy arc right now is slow. It was too slow and it kind of takes the thrill away, specially the episode where luffy punches the tenryubutoo (spelling), when i read that chapter i was imagining it as an epic punch and got me all excited (maybe because at the time we don't know what's gonna happen next). Anyway, as i saw the anime version, watching luffy run down those stairs looked like he was running down from the 20th floor to the ground level, idk, maybe its just me but before he punched teh tenryubutoo there was a lot of time difference, the anime still showed him walking up the stairs and all that, i dunno but that just killed it for me.

I'm happy with 1:1 manga/anime ratio, i'm not a fan of filler partically because people who follow the manga will know that it's inevitably leading no where so people will find it tedious and pointless.

Although I know it's moving along at a snails pace at least it's getting somewhere, I could keep on bashing filler but thats just me. I've never have cared much for the shit plot, shallow characters and waiting for the anime to get back on track.
