If you could make your own dub of One Piece, how would you do it? Which voice actors would you have?

Mine would be completely uncut. I would try keeping the script as close to the original as possible. As for the voices, I"d probably get ones from American cartoons:

An interesting alternative:

Translate the dialogue as original, aiming for a rating of PG or 14 (on the American TV standards), tweak the animation where needed to avoid "Godzilla lips", then try and cast "on the fly". Possibly animate the occasional extra episode or two to fill holes where the anime didn't mesh with the original manga.

The dozens of incidental and short-lived characters in the series could be done on an "invitation" basis. Either have sweepstakes where you could win the opportunity to voice a small part, or solicit people who will do it cheaply so they can have a film credit or as a novelty "I always wanted to be Hatchi" thing.

Air it at like 11.30 PM. I think running a few "mature audience" cartoon or anime dub series might present an interesting alternative "post-evening-news" program. It would be a safe spot, as the kiddies were long ago in bed, and represent something completely off the current market offerings. I never really cared for the traditional late-night shows, with their four minutes of humor followed by six annoying celebs who only want to pimp their new film or book or perfume. I will note that here some broadcasters have effectively challenged the 10.00PM news with an hour of the Simpsons reruns, so there's hope for animation past 9.

Well, I think 9.30 might be a harder sell. To start OP at 9.30, you'd need a half-hour show at 9.00. A lot of 9PM shows are dramas and run an hour, so the network would have to "schedule around" OP; you don't want to make it hard to adopt. By the time you're at 9.30, you've already sacrificed the kid audience, so why not push it very late where you can feel most lenient with censorship?

I think 11.30 is the new frontier for TV. People don't want to only watch infomercials or reruns or idiots trying to interview celebs and throw laptops in water to see if they float.

-Cut out filler arcs, digitally eraese Eirk when the Straw-Hat pirates reach Red Line. Also take out the filler parts in Alabasta and Davy Back Figth. Also edit the Louge Town arc to tame out fillers.

-Keep guns, blood, acohol, swearing(olny damn, hell or shit), death, and emotions.

-Leave all screens unedit and uncut, no marged episode and no screen cuts.

-Have all character personal triats based on the manga, also changing the text behind Bon Clay to Okama and have him say it. Also keep the age of an character manga-based.

-Keep orginal soundtrack and opening.

-Find voices that suits every characters well.

-Keep the dialouges orginal.

-Move the show to 8:30pm on Sunday.

If you're wondering why Steve Blum is listed for Zoro and Bon Clay, that's because the man can do quite the range of voices; for Zoro, he'd be doing his normal voice. For Bon Clay, he'd be doing the voice he did for Professor Nebraska in Trigun.

Wow Captain, you went all out, hats off to you. I just think that only a few of those voices don't match. I love how you put Joshua Seth as Luffy, considering that guy plays every single main character known to man.

From what I can gather from anime fans this would be the perfect dub.

-Keep the original voice actors only make them speak in engrish.

• The script would be a direct translation of the original script thus making no sense.
• There would be extra blood edited into the fights.
• Would probably translate kuso into the F word.
• The original openings will be there with the original songs only not subtitled so it makes less sense to those who don't know Japanese.
• Stick it on at 7:30 am timeslot for maximum exposure.

A dub like this would probably make One Piece very popular, maybe not in the right way though.

I feel that his voice is a little to low for Usopp. Looking at the Japanese version, he does a lot high pitched talking. Sure Vash does that, but it's still even too deep for Usopp standards. Eh I don't know, I'm just gonna drop it.

Realistic here. Give it a TV broadcast on Toonami in the beginning, then release uncut DVDs three or four months later. The TV broadcast would be as accurate as possible and have the original music and dialogue. Blood, swears, and Sanji's ciggy would be edited out but retained on the DVDs.

As far as voices go, if using the 4K!DS studio I'd keep Zolo and Nami the same. Usopp would be voiced by whoever does Chocolove's voice in Shaman King's dub (though now that I think about it, Sebastian Arcelus could have done a good job - I can hear him say "I'm not lying! I'm telling you the truth! Pirates are coming here!"), Sanji voiced by Eric Stuart, Chopper by Tara Jayne, Vivi by Rachel Lillis, Nico by Bella Hudson, and for Luffy… his voice is hard... well, whoever does it best.

Americans are very prudish with regards to "children's" or "family" shows. It's often very stupid programming, very heavy on the "life lesson", very soft and friendly images. Trying to appeal to what Joe Sixpack lets his kids watch without supervision is what made the 4kids dub in the first place.

If the minimal target age is below 10 or so, you will have vicious editing, likely enough to dissuade a mature audience. Also, some people will always find it odd to watch the same shows as their kids. If you aim for an age of 13 or so, you're just an adult show, with adult show tolerances, and a relatively young skewing demographic.

What I really don't get is the whole Sanji cigarette edit thing. People smoke. It's a bit odd in fact to see a world where nobody smokes. Do we think kids will start smoking to be like him? If so, let me start the eyebrow curling business first!

Why not use it as an opportunity to teach fantasy vs reality, perhaps as a public service announcement. "Yes, I smoke. But that's cos I'm a cartoon character. When my lungs get filled with tumours and tar, the artists can erase them and draw new ones. You can't. Don't smoke." I recall they actually did an anti-AIDS cartoon on a similar principle, the characters terrified after drunken encounter, then realising they're cartoons and therefore can't get diseases.

Me being a dork, I've done this with in mind of only using one company to do the dubbing. And I chose Nelvana, the wonderful Canadian company that has brought to you Beyblade, Medabots, and I do believe Cardcaptors (CCS). Why did I choose Nelvana? Good question, but they're loads better than 4Kids. But I absolutely loved Medabots, and besides they seemed pretty good at lack of editing, don't bring up CCS, because I've only heard bad things about it from fans.

So with that said, these are VA's that have worked on Nelvana shows, mind you that they aren't exclusive to only Nelvana so there are some that are known. I'm probably gona get flamed for my choices but again bare in mind this was done with one company.

Well, sort of; I only picked VAs that had worked together, and in America (because Richard Cox and Crispin Freeman, for instance, will probably never work together). I chose the American VAs since most of my favorites seem to work here. Or, more specifically, Bang Zoom! Entertainment.

Seth I can see as a difference in voice sound opinion, but how is Blum a "GAWD NO" for Zoro? :huh: Blum's good at that whole "badass" vibe. Hell, he's playing a "samurai" in a currently popular anime series involving rappers. Based on his past work, Blum works for Zoro more than Sanji, in my oh-pinion, especially considering how he's managed to portray characters in the past (he tends to play the badass characters better than he does the goofballs. While Sanji and Zoro aren't definitive descriptions of these two character types, they do show the tendancies). But, if you doubt Crispin Freeman as Sanji, just watch his performance as Straight Cougar in Scryed.

Jamieson Price as Crocodile is too perfect not to happen, in my opinion. Hell, Price sounds almost the same as Croc's Japanese VA.

I would get together with FOX and create a definitive guideline to what is allowed on TV and what is not allowed.

Put a little more effort in the script. To eliminate bad puns and better substitute for names not allowed on TV. For example, Power Juice.

Then I'll revisit the VAs and theme song. Make sure I have the best possible product on TV

I'd give the whole thing to Cosgrove Hall, the British studio that did the animated Discworld adaptations.
They have a reputation for being true to the source material.

That's not that simplistic. I'm pretty sure that was changed because Marine implies American military and they didn't want American military as the bad guys.
Pirate chasing Navy sounds British and they were cool with British bad guys.
(Same reason Darth Vaders command troops are British I suspect.)
