Do you watch One Piece without reading ahead in the manga?

I notice there are a lot of One Piece manga fans on here who don't like the anime. And then there are those who do like the anime, but are also up to date with the manga.

My question, One Piece anime subforum, is who watches the anime without having read ahead in the manga?

Me, I do read the manga also, but I don't go ahead of the anime. The anime is my first time enjoying the One Piece story. Though it can be tough avoiding those manga spoilers.

I'm just looking to see how many (if any) other One Piece fans on here choose the anime as their main source. I get the impression it's the minority around here.

I do include the option for those manga readers who don't watch the anime though, to cover all the bases.

I started reading the manga first and then read hundreds of chapters online until I was completely caught up. I really didn't see the point of watching the anime since I either had to watch the horrid 4kids dub or slowly download episodes off bittorrent. Thanks to Funimation I've started watching the series from the beginning and will occasionally check out the current episodes just to see how they handled my favorite scenes.

well for me i started watching the anime at first it was the 4kids dub i don't even need to go there about that dub, but then i started watching the japanese version and well i got instanly hooked.

i thought to myself why is One Piece hated among anime fans i mean Dragonball was the top dog that everybody loved and One Piece is the spiritual Successor why is One Piece treated like shit in the US mind you that this was when 4kids was still airing OP?

and then Funimation came along praise the lord for them they rescured OP from the hellish crap of Al Kahn and his minons and started watching the Funi Version which was great it has some flaws but i can overlook it, by the way the flaws i talk about is that there are somethings that sound better in the original not being a Weeaboo or anything but some of the charm it seemed was lost in the translation, like the engrish words that have charm to them or Luffy's singing in that forest it didn't sounded as good as the original but then again its very hard to translate or to make it sound like the original, but other then that excellent Dubbing company Funimation came.

and of the manga i have read from parts to parts but overall i like both manga and anime and think of them both as one since Toei Animation handles the anime so well that i don't think no other company can make One Piece as great and successful as Toei and the manga has an amazing story and art that as me as an inspiring artist well want to be like Oda it amazes me that his art that both Akira and Oda has inspired me to continue my dreams.

I first started reading the manga but it was canceled where I live after the Buggy saga so some time went by and then I started watching the anime from after the buggy arc up to the start of the CP9 Arc (the latest episode aired was when all of them were having flashbacks), then I started reading the manga and watched the anime afterwards. Nowadays I only read the manga and let 2 or 3 episodes go by and then watch them in a row.

I watched the anime only until I caught up (took me about 50 days from Arlong to current) and then read the manga until current as well. Currently I'm on Alabasta in reading all of the series that I had previously only experienced from the anime. I've got to say; the pacing's almost too fast for me in the manga sometimes (and I'm only saying that because I didn't have to wait for most of it week-by-week) and the anime has the perfect pace as long as you can skip the first eight minutes of Enies Lobby episodes and things like that. For that reason and the excellent voice acting I pretty much prefer the anime (helps I skip most filler) but the art in the manga's so much better that I can't give my heart completely to one or the other. People that don't like the anime are really missing out though.

first i was reading the vol1-28, than newest chapters via i-net…(and again after volume exists in my country)to that time also the anime appeared and so i watched it to the newest episode(even itS not good compared to the manga)..nowadays iam reading the spoilers,than the anime version of it..and after that again the chapter in the volume when itS published so far

at first i just watched the anime but when i got up to the latest anime ep i couldnt wait to find out so i started reading the manga

I started with the 4kids dub and read the U.S. Shoenen Jump through the Don Kreig arc. Around the end of Kreig arc(on the Saturday Morning run of One Piece in May 2005) I jump to read the scanations of the start of the Arlong arc and up, since I couldn't watched the Japansee run of the series right then since I didn't have my now DSL internet.

It took me from May of 05 to like Mid-November of 05 to catch up to the manga. When I caught up to the manga, it was right when the Straw Hats got to the Tower of Justice in Enies Lobby and Robin's flashback begin. And now days I read the manga everyweek to be updated about the adventures of the Straw Hats.

During this time, while I was reading the manga I was getting less torelate to 4kids dub of the series. So when I got DSL internet and got my laptop. I begin watching the japansee episodes of One Piece. The first japansee episode that I watch was episode 254, which was the episode when Nami and Chopper went to save Luffy and Zoro from their sticky situation being stuck. I didn't start watching the anime from the beginning until like a month or two later after that.

During that time I watch the beginning stuff from K-F, which I didn't caught to them until they begin the Davey Back Fights, and I started watching the Water 7 arc from beginning to the current events of the anime.

Currently I'm rewatching the episodes in order as Funimation release their dub of the series and I'm planning to buy every release of the Funimation to show them support of the series, and to me they are doing pretty much every thing that I enjoyed. And again I want to thanks Funimation that they save this great series and they are giving the series a proper treatment unlike 4kids were doing.

i dont know why i dont read the manga cos i know roughly where i am

whith other shows like naruto and bleach i keep up with anime and manga

but since One Piece is my favourite show i just feel its more sacred
so i be patient

I got into One Piece through watching the anime online. When I finished the released episodes, there was no way I could wait to find out what happened next. So yeah, I read the manga scanlations, but I still keep up with the anime, too. I not only get entertained, but I know what everyone's talking about on the boards; I think it's more fun that way.

I'm also buying the US OP mangas, mostly because I really want to own this series (and also because the early online translations are pretty bad). I do like the manga better than the anime, but I'm not going to read the earlier chapters online. Treasure hunting in a bookstore is more fun than reading the archives online, IMO. (Hopefully delayed gratification will work for me, and also to anyone else who tries it, too.)

I started reading the viz manga, i may tell you that waiting for a manga to come out in a certain date, going out, buying it and read it with no pressure of "i hope this manga turns out good in XXX chapters" is really nice, i really enjoyed reading it that way, but over the time i realised that i was missing too much and that the viz manga was having a very slow pacing, then i decided to read it online and here i am (i still buy the viz manga though).
As for the anime; i really never liked to see anime when im reading the manga version, it kills all the magic of it.

I used to watch the anime, not even knowing something like a manga exists, for many years. Then One Piece became the first manga I read and now it is the only series apart from Black Lagoon I both read the latest chaters and watch the latest episodes. …still waiting for season 3… :(

You'd be missing out on voice acting, music, animation, color (aside from the color spreads), sound effects…

The combination of those things makes for quite a potent mixture.

Especially the voice acting, One Piece has one of the best casts of seiyuu ever.

I think he's partly right, though.
Of course the animation is so EXTREMELY shitty that it almost hurts for a big amount of time.
But the music and voice acting gives it all such forte that you can ignore it. And isn't it nice to have voices in your head while reading the manga?
(Just for the record: No, I'm not a Psychopath.
This whole "voices in my head" part is nothing to worry about, since I don't tend to listen to them. )

There are some really moody instrumental tracks in the One piece OST, there just has to be something for your taste in there!

Mr. 2 always had a gay lisp in my mind, but it looks like Ivankov satisfied my urge for clichés with this one!
I have a very certain imagination of Boa Hancock's and Magellan's voices at the moment, too.
But as I know myself it will be replaced the very same second I hear the Japanese version of their voices.
In this aspect it's kinda sad that my imagination gets kicked in the crotch like that…But I just like to see how other people portray them with different dubs.

I started out watching the anime, and after people kept talking about some spoilers about "Cp9" I decided to check out what the fuss was over the manga..

So that surprise was spoiled for me, but the truth is, it's probably the reason I've been reading the manga since.

Also a lot of the choices the anime chooses to filter/alter from the storyline take a lot away from some characters, recently I've noticed it has messed up two of Sanji's greatest character defining moments.

Meh I'm not caught up in the anime yet.

But I'll probably do it much like Bleach. Watch the anime for the fights because they'll never be as good in the manga (for One Piece, I'd also watch it for any moments they shout, because some moments make the hairs stand up on my neck, it's just amazing) but I'd read the manga for the sake of advancements on the story, although it always makes more sense to me in the anime…but it gives me something to do.

Couldn't agree more. The most recent episode is a prime example of that. Not to mention – due to pacing -- scenes are changed around, which (to me) cause it to loose some of its appeal. I don't really watch the anime, I just wait for the arc to finish and then watch the highlights, essentially just fast-forwarding through the episode.

But it's the same for all the Big Three anime.

Naruto with its transformations that take a whole episode.
Bleach with its 1 chapter to 1 episode ratio.

And because manga is still, they can mark each panel perfect to their ability but with a whole team working on something to move, it's not as a simple. But certainly Bleach, god that has some dire anime art.

So that's why it's good to wait, let the shitty episodes pile up, watch them in one go and then wait greedily each week for the next battle.

What pisses me off with Bleach is.

To me there are three arcs. The beginning. Soul Society and HM. The beginning was full of fresh ideas and exciting, it didn't have lots of places to go, but short series aren't bad series. But to stretch out it's longevity it went onto the SS and HM arcs, which both felt unnecessary.

Even so, if I had a choice as to whether they made OP into an anime or not, I'd prefer that there was one. I have my complaints with the manga as well as the anime, but in terms entertainment, they both satisfy me more than anything else; why wouldn't I want that extra exposure to such a great series?

Flame of Recca was the real Yu Yu Hakusho cash-in, pretty much a direct clone, and it was around shortly after YYH. Still fun though.

I started off with the Toei anime of One Piece and watched until Skypiea but then it was getting to the fillers and I got bored and started reading the manga from the beginning to now! I only watch the anime for the scenes that I really love in the manga! I don't watch it every ep!

I'm sure the manga is great and all, and it always feels kind of bad being behind everybody else, but I've watched the anime from the beginning and that's how I've always known One Piece. (even though ironically I think the first time I ever saw One Piece was in a Shonen Jump issue from several years ago. I had no clue what it was back then so I don't really count it.)

If I were to get into the manga and then get ahead of the anime I would have nothing much to look forward to with the new anime episodes, so I decided against that.
