I've read some people say Franky is like Popeye (big forearms, soda=spinach, etc.), and since I grew up with exposure to Popeye (cartoons and stuff), I can totally appreciate/agree with that comparison.

While I was re-reading the Water 7 arc, I got to the scene with Franky in the bar with Blueno, and it struck me that Oda probably based him off Bluto/Brutus (Popeye's Enemy!).

I've read/noticed that Oda loves to use references from everything (Pop Culture, Civilizations, etc.) to include in One Piece, so I searched for some Popeye pictures to see if any other W7 characters resembled them. Interestingly, some of the characters do have some similarities and stuff :

I've noticed the resemblance between the Square Sisters & Olive Oyl. Obviously the Squair-dos not being one of them, but their tall frame and noses are somewhat similar.

I can definitely see some resemblance in the Square Sisters and Olive Oil. Nice one Battle Franky! I think Kalifa also had the Olive Oil "bun hairstyle" when she was first introduced didn't she?

I seem to really like the Sanji - Pig Chef find. It sounds sort of funny yet unique that his eye brow could be linked to the curl of a pig tail (though I doubt that Oda got his idea exactly from the Pig Chef). Bravo findings…

Some nice similarities - I totally agree with these:

Zoro == Zorro (I think everyone knew this one)
Usopp == Pinocchio (pretty clear, the nose and the lying)
Jango == Michael Jackson (my first thought when I saw Jango, the moonwalk leaves no doubt)
Bellamy == real pirate (nice find)
Blackbeard == real pirate (pretty clear)
Bartholomew Bear == real pirate (again nice find)

But I can't really agree on the Franky == popeye thing. I think it's too far-fetched. His body physique is much too different.

Kokoro doesn't look anything like the Sea Hag in Popeye, nor does Chimney look anything like Sweet Pea. And Gonbe looks nothing like that other… thing.

I don't think everything in Water 7 is based on Popeye, personally, that was a valiant effort though =) I can see Blueno and Franky... there's definite similarities... but the rest I think is really stretching for an association.

Though somewhat obvious, Franky's name and abilities are based on Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.

In the short story the Devil and Daniel Webster there is a reference to the Pirate "Teach" that had a black beard. Obviously Marshall D. Teach (Black Beard) is based off of Blackbeard the pirate, but the same name is pretty neat.

Just thought I'd say that I actually own that Popeye book that everybody is seeing the pictures from. I bought it from Universal Studio in California when I was nine years old.
I'm 25 now so yeah…very long ago.

I wouldn't say his abilities. All Frankenstein's monster could do was be somewhat stronger than a regular man. And his name could come from Frank Fiegel, the guy Popeye was modeled after. I think I went into detail in the "Oda's Inspirations" thread.

Well, that's a bit unfair. Everyone draws inspiration. In fact, the obscurity of some of his sources makes some of his references pretty impressive. And it's not like the characters aren't unique anyway.

Also, I did a search and looked at the "Oda's Inspirations" thread in the General Forum. My apologies for not doing a thorough search first before making some observations that were already discussed/discovered, and for starting a thread that is similar to an existing one (I generally only check the Anime/Manga forums).

As Battle Franky said, if the mods are ok with it, it might be a good idea to merge this thread with the "Oda's Inspirations" thread.

I agree that Franky and Blueno are based off of Popeye and Brutus…that much is pretty obvious. And yeah - Chimney IS Pippi. I think there was something about chimneys in the Pippi stories...dunno. I personally thought Lucci was more similar to Slash from ACDC o_O

That's part of what I like about the characters in One Piece - I can generally tell when a reference is being made, but it's not always completely obvious (like Zoro or Chopper). I'm sure there are a lot more references here. For instance, Donquixote is...well Don Quixote. And Bartholomew Bear might have something to with Sancho "Panda". As for Sanji...I still think he's a lot like Wolfwood from Trigun - but I think the two mangas began around the same time. Crocodile and his hook are a blatant Peter Pan reference. It's weird how everything has been messed around in most of the references though.

There are a lot more, like someone said about Usopp and Pinocchio ("uso" = lie). Monkey D. Luffy, of course, is probably a reference to the Japanese folk tale about the Monkey King that so many other manga have referenced (i think DBZ, Naruto and Saiyuuki, to name a few).

You know, this thread really made me think. I realize that this is a REALLY big stretch and almost definitely no what Oda was thinking, but I noticed that Butchie and Siam are dressed almost exactly the same as 2 characters from an old French cartoon, Asterix. Butchie looks like Obelix (the fat one) and Siam looks like Asterix (the skinny, short one).

Also, these guys are from Gaul, which sort of makes them vikings. Almost. Maybe. And Oda said in an SBS, I believe, that he likes Vikings.

Finally, remember when Jango hypnotised his crew into being stronger? Almost the entire story revolved around a potion that you could drink to make yourself much stronger. And the leader of the village gave to potion out to the warriors.

It's a stretch, and I don't much believe it, but let's see what you guys think.

I would place good money on Franky's name coming from Frankenstein given his body and the thrown-together nature of his former HQ not to mention the armor and weapons of his subordinates.

Honestly I haven't really been pulled in by any of the Popeye references. I think all of them outside Blueno and Franky who DO seem to share something with the two and are probably physically inspired by them, I don't buy any of the others. I mean some of the ones mentioned have been compared because they happen to wear black and have facial hair 0_o huh?

Well the anchor tattoo is pretty common actually but it's very possible Popeye was an inspiration for that as well.

Its pretty obvious, but I think Miss Goldenweek was based on Josie and the Pussycats.
