One Piece 396 [KubuSubs] [HD]

A new fansub group, KubuSubs (known for doing Death Note last year when all the other groups quit due to licensing). It's a single-girl's 'group', with Kubus being the one that does the work. I'm helping her out with QCing.

We released One Piece 396 because a HD release of the other One Piece fansubbing groups was late. For this episode we used the timings by ACSF, so full credit for that goes to them!

We will probably keep releasing One Piece episodes. You can find our website at http://kubusubs.wordpress.com.

Please note that the 1280x720 release has some incorrect translations. The 1440x810 version fixed this.

This is an experienced group. They have subbed Death Note, but they had trouble with encoding so they never really got popular while their translations have always been the best. Their encoding's perfect now, though.

i thought the standard cool anime format was supposed to be .mp4 and if it seems like all are gonna always be .mkv is there a way to play that format on the 360 or ps3

It makes the encoding easier, usually resulting in no loss of quality.
PS3Video9 by Redkawa can convert MKV files, by the way

I've always fansubbed on my own, so I do everything myself (timing, translation, typsetting, etc). Don't expect TOO much of everything.

For one, I don't do karaoke, but that's more because I hate karaoke. Nowadays you can hardly sing along with the words because there are too many SPARKLES in the way of the words, or the words appear the moment they're sung, so you can't even jump in on time.

Anyway, enjoy!

You have to convert it on the PC and then move it to the PS3.

While I'm at it, do you know how to solve the problem that the lower half of the subtitles are cut when watching on the PS3 XD? Never really got that.

Also, just to clarify: KubuSubs is not a 'group'. I'm doing everything myself. So when I say "MY subs" it's not that I'm a prick and trying to take all the fame of the group or something. It's just me XP.

It takes about 7 hours, if I do everything myself. Timing, translation, etc. This time, I managed to rip the timings from the other fansub group that did this episode. But I did the translation myself. So it took a few hours less than it usually does (when I time myself).

It's not really hard. It's just redundant work X3;. Timing is seriously tiring and crappy work, translating is very fun and engaging. Typesetting is the most fun, in my opinion, because all your hard work is finally taking shape X3. So it's both hard and fun. But most of all, fun! And when you see the leechers piling up on your released torrent, is the best moment of all, of course. Especially when lots of people appreciate the work you've done :3. It just keeps you motivated to do more!

Oh and I'm REALLY surprised that some people here remember me from Death Note! XD Haha, you know, I had to redo a year at school because of that X3;. I was too busy with fansubbing and screwed up my exams XD

I usually watch One Piece with my boyfriend, and he doesn't understand Japanese so we wait for the subs :3. But the release was late this week so we couldn't watch it together, which sucked XD. So I decided to sub it, if only so we could watch it together XDD. Pretty weird huh.

Pretty cool actually. On many counts. One, you can brag you subbed the episode to your bf with awesome translations, Two, you and your bf both love One Piece, Three, it's funny how convenient knowing Japanese is when you can do that sort of stuff just like that and Four we're getting great subbed episodes thanks to the power of love XP

@Kubus: you're great ! And I agree with you when you say it's fun to make the translation part. You have to think about how to render correctly the original sentence into the other language without to loose too much meaning, connotations and cultural references. At times, it could be quite hard but, when I found a graceful reformulation, sometimes I'm just proud of myself

By the way, it would also be cool if you could release the .ass or .srt you used for your encoding. It's so much convenient to have the subtitle as a separate file and have the raw with the maximum quality you can get.

Well, there were a few terminology issues, like "Merman", ''-sei'', Luffy being called ''Luffy'' a few times when Papagg said mugi, and a few grammar mistakes, but otherwise this was pretty good for a first crack at One Piece.

I figure this might not be the place to ask, but whenever I play .mkv there's usually some slowdown whenever there's lots of panning or zooming, so that the audio and video gets out of synch. I can't get through the opening, and have to skip ahead (I don't like skipping through openings, even if they're horrible), basically. I only get this problem with .mkv's, so I'm wondering what I need to do to fix the slowdown problem, especially since every subbing group and their mother uses it these days.

@Xinyingho: Thank you very much! I noticed A LOT of mistakes when I watched the episode just now, I'll fix all of that and post a .ass :3. I also noticed I got a pretty crappy RAW. I'm a noob at technical stuff (I don't even know what H264 and all of that is XD), so if you could tell me which raws are the best, I can work with those in the future :3.

If I'm really going to sub One Piece, I'll get a quality checker ^^;.

And maybe a reinstall of your codecs will help? I personally use CCCP which works great. It might also be an issue of your computer's CPU. MKVs are usually HD releases, and some people can't run them properly.

It's quite hard to explain simply what are the best raw. Let's try then:

Basically, each raw have their resolution given in their filename. You should at least get a HD release (1280720), but FHD is better (19201080). Bigger the resolution, better the raw.
Then you have to check the file size. For a HD raw, a typical size would be between 300 to 360 MB. For a FHD one, it's usually between 750 and 850 MB. Bigger the size, better the raw.
Finally, you have to watch a raw from beginning to end to see if it has any problem. Sometimes you can have 5 seconds missing (pitch black and no sound) in the middle of the episode or some glitches on several scenes ond so on…

Well currently, it's hard to find any FHD raw for One Piece, HD are your best bet. You can also find some 1440*810 raw, but most of the times they have some glitches...the one capturing episodes at this resolution must have a crappy hardware or a crappy bandwidth...

Lately, the raws provided by OPF-Italia seems quite good.

Am I missing a file or something? I tried to watch it with VLC (I actually didn't check the filetype before downloading it; in the past, VLC has refused to run .mkv, but it didn't complain this time.), but the subtitles are a separate track, one that I can't change at all. The text takes up the entire screen, and editing the subtitles options in VLC does nothing to change the subtitles.

What am I doing wrong? It's really difficult to watch the episode like this.

@ChronoSquare: I never liked vlc with mkvs. It also seems your codecs are a bit clunky, so try to install CCCP or some other codec pack (I recommend CCCP though, it comes with Zoom Player, which is perfect for mkv, imo)

I have fixed all the issues in the script, also edited a lot of translations. It seems I had already fixed lots of this stuff, but I fixed them in the wrong .ass file! facepalm

I get asked a lot if I want to join other groups, but in a group I always feel pushed That, and I enjoy the whole process of fansubbing, from timing to typesetting to encoding to releasing. If I join a group, I wouldn't be able to do all that, probably just translating. So I'll always be a single-woman's group (group? XD).

Yeah, I found quite a lot mistakes when I rewatched the ep. I did quality check and edit the subtitles, but I did that in the wrong .ass file So all my fixes were for nothing. I did upload a fixed subtitle file though, it's somewhere in this thread.

For next releases, I'll guarantee the quality is top notch and there won't be any mistakes X3. I got myself a QC now haha.
