Police have arrested a 27-year-old unemployed Tokyo woman named Tomoko Fukushige on Tuesday for allegedly sending threatening email messages to Eiichiro Oda (pictured at right), the creator of the popular One Piece pirate manga. According to the authorities, the woman's husband was dismissed from Oda's office, so she reportedly sent about one hundred messages that read "Die, Die" and similar words to Oda's mobile phone from September to December of 2007. Oda reported the incidents to the police before they investigated and made the arrest.

Though slightly unrelated, this reminds me of our little troll some years back who claimed to the world that he was ODA-BOSS because he bought the volumes. I think it was how violently everything was phrased that reminded me of this.

There is violent rape in womens' prison. I don't know how popular One Piece is with that demographic, but she could either be hailed as a hero or turned into a pin cushion if she does go to prison.

This is a bit of a curious incident.

Manga-ka get tons of letters, but usually there's a publisher-designated reader in the way to sort through them all. I don't know if Oda personally reads all his fan-mail but I doubt he does…he'd have no time for OP at all.

At a previous Jump Fest, I think it was 2007, Oda and Kishimoto discussed who gets ratted on more by fans and someone said it was Oda. So, Oda at least KNOWS not everyone is happy with what he does.

So why report this incident to the police? And at that, why was the story broken to the news wires? I thought Japan tried to avoid publicizing personal issues like this to reduce embarrassment for anyone involved. I mean even direct neighbours of the people mentioned can get ostracized when the woman's actual name was released.

During axe-murder incidents, I don't even see the names.

My guess would be...she spammed Oda's private email address, having got it from her husband, and Oda was perhaps unaccustomed to the spam or felt personally at risk since the lady knew how to find him.

I mean, I wouldn't expect Oda to report someone like this and risk potentially ruining her life.
