It seems that Oda is repeating the dual menace idea from Thriller Bark again, this time with two big bosses instead of one.
This is pure speculation from my part but with a lot of marine ships around Impel Down it will be almost impossible to make an escape and Oda won´t make the marines to look like pussies.
I believe that Shiryu will be a case like Kuma but this time more dangerous for Luffy because he will defeat a tired Luffy after the fight against Magellan and capture him for the marines.
It would be cool if Zoro defeats Shiryu in a single fight.

That was nearly a jackpot. -
This entire scene with luffy remind me of hokuto no ken , Rei was about to die after his fight against raoh but toki cured him , rei was suffering for a loooooooooooooong time during the cure but at the end he came out ridiculously stronger but his hair became white because of the pain and he died a few hours after ( of course I don't think luffy is going to share the same fate but the similarity is really there).
Maybe Oda is doing an hommage to hokuto no ken with the whole hellish cure of luffy.

couple things cleared up with the easier to read scans.
Chief Prison Guard "Shiryuu of the Rain" is how he's called.
And the Level 6 pirates names were legible.The worst female prisoner in the Pirate World, Catalina Devon

Vasco Shot, the drunk(Yes, Vasco is actually spelled バスコ in katakana, but Vasco De Gama is also spelled バスコ in Japanese.
This being a pirate manga, I think it's safe to assume it comes from Vasco De Gama.)And of course…. Croc, Ace, and Jimbei are all there too.
This should put some silly arguments to rest. -
