discuss.Actually, if you know anything about historical pirates, they came in all sorts of types back in the old days. There were pirates who robbed shipping vessels, there were pirates who were just against their repressive governments (look up Captain Misson), pirates that would sack settlements, and pirates on the government payroll that hit pirates that were on the payroll of other countries (or hit the ships of other countries, letter of marque and all that).
Nowadays, you have pirates that are actually functioning as a local coast guard for various countries (along the African coast, for example), you have pirates that rob cruise liners and the like, you have pirates that rob people to fund religious extremist groups.
Oda uses a lot of those types to model his pirates after, and he adds an additional incentive: A goal that means you're basically the king of this rogue collection of anti-government types. Which is what Luffy is pretty much focused on. As the Strawhats basically rob everyone they beat up (I mean, come on, Nami's a professional thief, and they keep coming into piles of gold…where would that come from if they weren't robbing people? It's not like they have full time paid jobs or whatever), yeah, they're pretty much pirates. All Luffy is, is hired muscle that beats up the big guy so Nami can grab the stash and get away with it. The rest of the crew keeps them going so they can pick up more cash. Robin is an archeologist, she basically can help direct them to various tombs they can plunder. Again, more pirating. Nice, honest, upright citizens don't rob graves. That's totally a pirate move.
To say they're not pirates is just a sign that you aren't paying attention. Luffy is way, way more of a pirate than Naruto is a freaking ninja.

IDK. He's helped so many people along the way who really were at the end of their rope. And Bonney even asked who had heard of a pirate helping people. To me, a pirate is all about taking what doesn't belong to you. And the only times I can say that was at Sky Island, where they took the gold out of the inside of a giant snake.
Just doesn't feel like piracy to me.
As for their roles, it's not Luffy beats them up just so Nami and steal something. That's more of the afterthought (not even a focus, cause I can't remember the last time they beat up a bad guy for money…Alabasta??). Besides, it that were so, why didn't luffy just steal Cricket's gold when Bellamy took it? He could have easily lifted that from them.
