Yeah, I'm going to be reviewing each One Piece arc. It is really hard for me to review One Piece as a whole show and each individual episode, so I've decided to review each arc, starting with what I call the First Voyage Arc, but is really the "The Captain Morgan Arc". After few days, I will post a review on the next arc. 😁

Review #1- The First Voyage Arc (Captain Morgan Arc) Episodes 1-3

      –-

The reason I call what most people know as the Captain Morgan Arc, the First Voyage Arc, is because I really don't think Captain Morgan is the focus here. The focus is on the first voyage Luffy has in his attempts to become Pirate King, while battling Alvida, taking on Captain Morgan, and recruiting Zoro. Captain Morgan doesn't even appear in the first episode, and is defeated early on in the third episode...so I don't think the arc should be based around him.

Hmm, well it is hard to review such a small arc, but...I liked it. However, I don't think it is as good as future One Piece arcs. Everything just seems different than the rest of One Piece here, such as how the world appears to be and the overall style. Compare these episodes (particularly the setting) to Water 7, CP9, Thriller Bark, and Skypiea, and this just seems...off.

Nonetheless, it is a good arc, however it wasn't the best starter. Most first arcs of shows need to hook the audience to continue watching further episodes and really get into this, but the Captain Morgan arc didn't really do it for me. I actually found the first episode to be quite uninteresting. However, I'm not saying it is bad or anything. It was good enough for me to continue watching.

What I did really like about this arc was Episodes 2 and 3. Luffy's encounter with Zoro and Helmeppo, and especially the battle against Captain Morgan and his marines were really captivating and entertaining. Zoro just appears awesome in these episodes. Although I do have to say, who here thought that Coby was a main One Piece character?? He's like the 2nd most important character in this arc and then he fades off besides the ocassional future appearances related to Garp and all.

So overall, I enjoyed the arc, but it wasn't the best. I give the First Voyage Arc a 7/10.

Guys, please tell me your opinions, and I'll review the Buggy Arc next!

I agree the first one piece arcs before Barette are not in my eyes good. I quit 2 times before getting to Barette cuz they dident do it for me. When I at last got passed these starter arcs i watched 280 episodes with probbaly 15-20 episodes everyday. Its really to bad that it starts of like this cuz its keeping many people from getting hooked I think

well the morgan arc is not that strong or exciting when compared to the later sagas but it was better done this way because shows that start out as Strong get weaker over time and this has happened to a couple of animes.

One Piece didn't started out Strong but it became stronger overtime in its plot and its originallity and so forth.

Yeah, I agree. It is a shame that the beginning of One Piece being weak puts off a lot of people.

i thaught the barette arc was preaty good at first, but seeing how in the end luffy and all the cooks got preaty much defeated and probally still could have won if they pulled together in team work, i find the ending result disapointing.

I really enjoy the beginning of One Piece, I think it's a very good way to start things off.

And of course, the flashback with Luffy and Shanks is simply legendary. Which is how the manga started, too.

The flashback is how it should've started. Then Oda should've rewritten all the pre-Arlong stuff to not be as bad.

While a fan of opinion, I really can't see why anyone would find the early arcs bad. they were merely the beginning arcs so of course they won't be as great as the current arcs but they still have Mr.Oda's style and incredible story telling abilities. Of course I guess people who didn't start One Piece from those arcs would find them sort of tedious compared to the current arcs rather than timeless as the beginning of a great adventure.

Oh man, I love all the early One Piece stuff. The Kuro arc is especially awesome. Not to mention it highlights Jango, one of my favorites. And who can dislike Buggy? He's the most gangsta of all clowns.

                        [edit:]

I just re-watched the first episode now, still a classic. I love those self-contained first episodes that set the tone of a show. Also fun looking back at some of the details. Luffy mentions in the episode that he'd like to have a crew of at least 10 people. It's also interesting comparing the change in art style, everybody looked more cute and "chibi" back then. It's like they've actually grown up over the years, due to artstyle maturing.

Also, the badass electric guitar that shreds when Zoro is introduced at the end of the episode is so insanely badass. This show needs more electric guitar.

Oh, Kuro arc is one of my favorites. And I don't think the early One Piece arcs are bad, a 7/10 is still a pretty good score.

It all goes uphill with Episode 4 🆒

By the way, in my One Piece arc reviews I've decided to now state my favorite episode of each arc, and for the Captain Morgan arc, I would have to say Episode 3. It was the first real battle of the series (not including that sort-of fight between Luffy and Alvida in Episode 1), and seeing Captain Morgan getting beat up was awesome.

                          One Piece Arc Review #2

Buggy the Clown Arc (episodes 4-8)

Favorite Episode: Episode 4 (This was just plain awesome seeing Luffy's childhood. Red Haired Shanks losing his arm for Luffy and then giving him the Straw Hat was just really good storytelling).

                          –-

Now don't get me wrong, Buggy the Clown, along with Mohji, Cabaji and Shushu are just awesome and lovable characters. But I really don't like the Buggy the Clown arc.

It starts off GREAT with the Romance Dawn episode, telling Luffy's past, which is by far my favorite episode of this arc. Towards the end of the episode the actual Buggy plot begins, and well, I really don't like it much.

A really good part about this arc is Nami's introduction, and how she becomes a main character. I did like how she tricked Buggy and all. It is after the whole party scene where this arc goes downhill.

By all means, it is not bad. I just really didn't enjoy it. Sometime it's kinda boring. Sometimes it is a bit confusing. However, there were some fight scenes that I did like, such as Luffy kicking Buggy's balls, and the Mohji vs. Luffy and Cabaji vs. Zoro fights were pretty good.

To be honest, it is really hard to explain why I don't like this arc, and I don't really know...my only guess is that it didnt' appeal to me and just was too boring and not complex and action packed as other arcs.

Overall though, the Buggy the Clown arc was ok. We get to see more action, and the PROPER introduction of Nami and Buggy...I give it a 6.5/10.

But after this arc...it all goes uphill....I review the Captain Kuro arc next!

I have to agree with the fact that the Buggy arc is a bit tiresome for being the first longest arc…even though they all get longer and longer, after wrapping things up so quickly with Zoro it felt like such a long time....of course wouldn't we ALL love an arc to be less than 10 episodes long these days =_=;..... lol, god that was sooo long ago.

But really, other than the fact that we meet Buggy and Nami, it doesn't really do very much for me. Which is sad considering Buggy was my first favorite villain (and is still up there even if all the others are like supernovas compared to him), and all his fight scenes were high-larious--even more so considering he really creeps out my friend who is scared of clowns, muahahaha. Other than that, though, it's kinda dull, I actually fell asleep THREE TIMES while watching this arc--meaning I watched the arc three seperate times and fell asleep EACH time (one was even with the Funi dub, which made me have to watch it again ><).

Now mind you, I'm not saying it's dull only in comparison to other such Kick-ass arcs as Alabasta, Enis Lobby and Thriller Bark. I'm talking about when I first started watching OP, and even though I had seen pieces of Enis Lobby and such, I strictly went in order when watching it all for the first time. Meaning it was boring the first time around when I knew of no other comparison. I'm not saying I hate it either... Buggy and Nami's(especially) apperances are crucial to the story and both have such wonderful backgrounds.. which is actually ONE part of the arc that I did enjoy, seeing Buggy's background concerning Shanks, that's was an awesome tie-in. Other than that, the bit about the dog was a little cute and pretty touching, but really that was about all that interested me with this arc.

Plus, looking back, should it really have been so hard for Luffy to escape from that cage Buggy slapped him in? He IS rubber, after all... why not just stretch out and squeeze between the bars? He did it to try and get food after all. I think Oda might've underestimated his own abilities early on. All in all I think he must have been testing his own mettle with these early adventures, which I suppose is why a lot of people don't really appreaciate the beginning much. I certainly appreciate it at least, even if it makes me fall asleep sometimes ^^

My Review of the Captain Kuro Arc (episodes 9-18)

                                    –--

Ahh, the Captain Kuro Arc. Most people don't think it is much better than Morgan and Buggy, but I really have to disagree here. The Kuro Arc is what actually got me excited to keep on watching One Piece

Most people complain about it because it is slow, dull and boring, but I really don't think so. Ok, ok, Episodes 9 and 10 are somewhat shallow, but by all means, not bad, probably on level to the Buggy arc.

But it was Episode 11 that really got me excited. So, in the first half, basically Kurohadore (Klawhadore) has trashed Usopp and banished him from Kaya's mansion because Usopp is a liar, and his father was a pirate. This was a bit of an emotional scene, especially seeing Usopp stand up for Yasopp. But what REALLY did it was when we discovered that Kurohadore, was really Captain Kuro, an evil pirate captain that was plotting to murder Kaya and gain her wealth! The reason I love this so much is because in the 1st half of the episode, Kuro was trashing Usopp for his father being a pirate, when in the 2nd half, we find out he IS a pirate.

After this episode, the Kuro arc did go downhill a little bit, but I still enjoyed it, especially some of the battle scenes. I loved the cat theme that we got from the Kuro pirates, and stuff like Kaya holding a gun to her "beloved butler" was sweet stuff. At the beginning of this arc, you just hate Usopp and even though you know he's gonna join the crew, you regret it. But by the end, Usopp becomes a favorite character of yours. Well, at least that was the case with me.

On a side note, the Gaimon episode I typically classify as part of the Kuro arc, not Baratie, because well the first half has to do with Usopp and making the pirate Jolly Roger and all....and in terms of the Straw Hat Pirates, the Kuro arc was about Usopp, and Baratie is all about Sanji. The Gaimon episode was cool 😁

So overall, the Kuro arc really raised the bar in One Piece, at least for me. I give it a 8/10.

Kuro is probably my list favorite of all the arcs I've seen. But Gaimon's episode is probably one of my favorite episodes. Just because It's a nice stand alone episode that is easy to show people to get them into the series. One Piece is pretty bad on that.

We basically have the same opinion i think if i were to choose the morgan arc, buggy, kuro, kuro is probably the best out of the 3, JANGO IS BADASS!..

anyway i think you should consider the scenario at that time and not make it THAT bad. the storytelling on the latest arcs was much better because of the history that these arcs have made.

over-all keep em coming, looking forward to the future arcs, arlong, baratie, loguetown, i agree, it really goes uphill from baratie onwards.

are you doing filler reviews? lol

they won but don kriegs pirates could have won if they tried. sanji had his bones broken and was too badly injured. luffy was drowning andas showed already doncrige pirates>bartie chiefs. plus theres the fact that luffys ultimite attack failed whale don criege got up.

                                                    Review of the Baratie Arc

                                                    Episodes 19-30

Favorite Episode- #26. I really loved this episode because of the Zeff-Sanji flashbacks, just seeing them starve to death on the island was really a good scene and was pretty entertaining too.
                                                    –--

Ahh, the Baratie Arc. I remember when I first started this arc I wasn't very excited for it, because it seemed kind of dull. So there's this floating restaurant that gets attacked by a pirate crew. Ehh, doesn't sound that good.

Well, I guess you could say I was wrong. It wasn't until Don Krieg actually showed up on the scene that I really got into this arc, because it was moving pretty slow. There were some pre-Krieg scenes that I liked, including the Zoro/Kuina flashback, Luffy's crash into Baratie, Sanji's introduction where he embarrases Fullbody, when Sanji feeds Gin, and also the Johnny-Yosaku scenes.

But by the time I finished watching the arc, I thought this was as good as the previous Kuro arc, if not maybe a little better. I really loved the characters of Sanji, Gin, and Zeff, they were just so thoroughly developed. At first I hated Sanji, but you just learn to love the character. It wasn't until we learned Zeff was a pirate called Red Leg Zeff that I really started to like him, but after seeing the flashback I think he's awesome. And Gin, he's just plain awesome and turns out to be a "good guy" after all. And who can't love Patty and Carne (is that their names?), those two hilarious chefs.

What got me into this arc was 2 things: the flashbacks, notably Zoro/Kuina and even more so Sanji and Zeff, because they were just so emotional, and better than Usopp's. The other thing was the fighting, I really liked it, especially with all of Don Krieg's weird weapons. With all those weapons and armor and stuff, I thought he was a Walking Fortress.

And who DOESN'T love that duel between Zoro and Mihawk? It is one of the classic One Piece battles and pure awesome 🙂

So what did I not like about this arc? Well, besides how it was a bit boring in the beginning, I have to say what the hell is up with Pearl. This guy is such a stupid character, I hated the scenes where he was the focus so much.

What really made the arc good was how it was leading into the next one the whole time, as while the Baratie/Straw Hat Pirates vs. Don Krieg's Pirate Armada battle was going on, Nami was secretly abandoning them on the Going Merry....dum, dum, dum, TO BE CONTINUED.

                                                    Overall Score: 8/10

I loved the Baratie arc. It sort of teaches you a lesson and at the same time, you see some crazy fighting skills. Especially when Mihawk arrives. Zeff teaches Sanji it takes courage and will to surpass your limits and he'll need it to survive the Grand Line. Sanji will forever remain the "cool one" of the group. 😛

What amazes me so about that duel Zoro vs. Mihawk is how good it still fits in after all this time. When they animated it neither the style of the anime nor the one of the manga where as fixed as they are today. And still they managed to capture one of the last enemies of the story perfectly. You could say it plays a part in defineing the style of later One Piece. Baratie is definatly one of the best East Blue Arcs.

Favorite Episode- #35. There isn't any point in explaining why…the flashback with Bellemere is well....epic. But for some reason I like the pre-Arlong flashback scenes that were shown in this episode instead of Bellemere's actual death in Episode 36.

Ahh, the Arlong arc. By far the most popular, most critically acclaimed, and best arc of the East Blue Saga. It's just lovable.

The first part of the arc has the Straw Hats in utter confusion over what's going on...why has Nami stolen the ship? Where is she headed? Why are Johnny and Yosaku afraid of this Arlong guy?

This arc is very good for 3 main reasons: 1) the character development, 2) the plot and 3) the villains.

In the Arlong arc, all of the Straw Hats develop very nicely. Although we get glimpses of this with the Buggy, Kuro and Krieg fights, this is the first time we really see Luffy being serious and thoughtful. The line "NAMI IS MY CREWMATE (nakama:ninja:)" is just such great character development. Usopp being brave and taking on Arlong with his poor skills towards the beginning of the arc is very commendable, and his battle with Chuu, in which he actually beats him, just really shows what Usopp is made of. Zoro's is really good as well. He fights Hatchan despite the fact that he is on the brink of dieing from Hawk Eyes Mihawk, yet is still able to stand tall and win. Sanji? Well, considering the last arc was all about his character development, we didn't really see much here, except how he's willing to save Luffy's life.

But of course, the biggest character development comes from Nami. We've known her as a greedy thief, cheater and bossy girl throughout the previous arcs, but here we see that there's more to it than meets the eye. She's been collecting 100 million beri to save her village from Arlong. And I have to say, the scene where she stabbed her own hand to fake Usopp's "death" was...very well done. The fact that she was in Arlong's crew in the first place just made me knew there was going to be great character interaction in this arc.

And who here doesn't love Genzo? That dude is awesome. Nojiko and Bellemere (BELLEMERE-SAN!!!) are also great characters.

The plot is also very well here. This arc starts off as huge mess with no one really knowing what's going on, but we slowly learn what's going on. The flashback episodes (35 and 36) were just great. Bellemere's death is critically acclaimed in One Piece, and it should be, because it is epic. The March to Arlong Park was also just so epic, I was glued to the screen the first time I watched it. (NOTE: Overtaken is a great soundtrack ).

I really like the villains as well. First, of course, Arlong. He's such a great villain, because there's no way you can justify him. Sure, Buggy's a messed up clown. Krieg was helping his crew survive starvation. But Arlong? Pure evil. That's what's so great about him. He also has some very interesting crewmates with him, who doesn't love Hatchan or Chuu? Despite less important, I really liked Nezumi, the corrupt Marine captain. First, he tries to confiscate Nami's treasure, that she's been collecting all these years to free Cocoyashi village, and what do we know? He's taking bribes from Arlong. Annoying character, but great villain.

Now what WASN'T good about this arc? Well, the fighting wasn't the best. Luffy and Arlong's fight was alright, but sometimes I got bored through it. Usopp's fight was pretty well done, probably my favorite here. Zoro and Sanji's were also good, but nothing that great. Also, Episode 44, the post-Arlong's defeat episode, was a little slow and boring for me.

But overall, the Arlong Park arc was very good because of the emotions it brought. Did anybody cry when Bellemere was killed? I'd like to know if you did. I give the Arlong Park Arc an 8.5/10.

SIDENOTE- The reason I don't classify Ep. 45 with Arlong is because it has nothing to really do with it, and because they decide to go to Loguetown in this episode, I classify it with the Loguetown Arc.

1 Reply Last reply Reply Quote 0

Favorite Episode: 48. The episode where the crew actually ARRIVES at Loguetown, episode 48, has always been one of my favorites. Why? Well not only are we introduced to the awesome character that is Smoker, but we get to see A LOT of Gold Roger's past. The execution flashback is awesome.

                                                                                          –-

First of all, most people consider the Loguetown Arc to start at episode 48, and that episode 45 is the Arlong Arc and eps 46 and 47 are a separate arc (Buggy Side Story). Well, episode 45 had NOTHING to do with Arlong, and they even decided to go to Loguetown in this episode, so that's why I consider this part of the Loguetown Arc. As for the Buggy Side Story eps, well the side story is all in preparation for the rest of the Loguetown (getting revenge on Luffy), so that's why it fits in this arc. And of course, 48-53 is non-questionably Loguetown Arc material.

For some reason, I thought I wasn't going to like this arc. Why? Because I wasn't sure how this could pair up to anything like the epicness and emotional-train ride that was the previous Arlong Arc. However, I ended up liking this arc A LOT more than I thought I would, and just as much as the Kuro and Baratie arcs.

So starting off with Episode 45, I really liked this episode because it is a nice recap of everything the Straw Hats have accomplished so far, and we get to look at all the characters and locations they passed through in the First Voyage, Buggy, Kuro, Baratie and Arlong Arcs. Luffy getting a bounty was definitely a memorable scene. And I was SOOO waiting for a little rematch between Fullbody and Sanji.

Episodes 46 and 47 is the Buggy Side Story, in which Buggy regathers his crew to seek revenge on Luffy in Loguetown. I found these episodes pretty average. There were several humorous scenes, and by all means they weren't boring or anything like that, but there really wasn't much too them.

Once the Straw Hats actually arrive in Loguetown is very interesting. I really liked this arc because each episode focuses on a character's struggle. They even added 2 filler episodes here, and surprisingly, they were basically as good as the canon material.

Episode 48 is Luffy's episode in which he frantacally seeks to find the platform where Gold Roger was executed. I really liked the scene in the bar where the old man gave a very good explanation over Gold Roger's death. Seeing Smoker and Tashigi for the first time were also cool. I really love Smoker; he's a great character. Episode 49 is Zoro's episode in which while getting new katana he runs into problems with Seargent Major Tashigi of the Marines, who curiously reminds him of Kuina. The episode was very hilarious and entertaining. Episode 50 was a filler episode, and Usopp's nontheless. I really liked the character of Daddy the Father and the standoff. Great classical stuff. I also really liked the scene that showed a flashback of Yasopp, showing how great of a person he was. Episode 51 was also filler, and probably the worst episode, but it was still good anyways. It was based around Sanji entering a cooking competition against this crazy chef called Carmen to win this special fish. Nami didn't get an episode; but probably because we had enough of her in the LAST arc.

It is Episodes 52 and 53 where all the REAL fun begins. Buggy and his crew finally attack the Straw Hats and prepare to execute Luffy, Luffy battles Captain Smoker, and the Straw Hats escape from Loguetown thanks to Monkey D. Dragon, who was very creatively introduced to the show. A lot happens here; but what is very memorable is how when Buggy was about to execute Luffy; Luffy was smiling, and lightning saved him.

The fight scenes in this arc were pretty average; however I really did enjoy Smoker's Devil Fruit ability. It was the plot, humor and character development that really sealed the deal here. I give the Loguetown Arc an 8/10.

Oh crap, looks like the Apis Arc is next...save me!

Favorite Episode: 61. Why? Because its not completely filler and the second half can even be considered part of the Laboon Arc. I did really like the Reverse Mountain scene; it just reminded you of everything the Straw Hats had accomplished and what is ahead for them.

The Warship Island/Apis Arc, or what I prefer to call the Sennenryu Arc, is one of the most controversial and hated arcs of One Piece to date. Why? Well one, because of the plotholes it created and two, its boring.

I must say, the plothole with the steel isn't such a big deal for me. Just call the metal iron or something...and plothole fixed. The one about how Zoro doesn't believe in dragons later on in the canon plot, that's the bigger nuisance of the two. But if you just accept this arc as what it is; uncanon filler; it doesn't really matter.

This arc has been nominated several times as the worst One Piece arc there is, and the main reason for this is because of how boring it is. Nothing really happens; and because of the poor story and fights, this is what the result is.

                                                                                                      😴 :getlost:

Not to mention Apis and Nelson suck at characters bad.

But is there anything good about this arc? Well, I could think of just three-
1- Erik the Whirlwind is a pretty good character. I liked him for what he was, and it worked.
2- This arc did contain manga-relevant information that was important; and it was the scene explaining the whole Calm Belt situation.
3- Episode 61 was an episode I actually enjoyed. The first time I watched Reverse Mountain; I just got really exciting to watch ahead.

But overall, the negatives in this arc FARRRRR outnumber the positives. I give the Sennenryu Arc a 3.5/10.
