I mean really? I don't get how this is even an argument. It's a freaking pronoun. There is really no justification for using Shabondy. This kind of thing turns me off from your releases.

What Shabondy means shouldn't even matter though. Sabaody is a pronoun. You can't change the name just cause you feel like it.

Why does someone say this every single time anyone points out flaws in a sub script? Especially simple, easy to fix stuff that normally wouldn't exist? I appreciate everyones effort into subbing the show. But that doesn't mean that I have to agree or like every translation decision thats made or refuse to speak up just to keep my oh so grateful holier than thou status.

It's written "Sabaody" in the show, so that's the official spelling, so it's more proper.
Like spelling Blueno that way instead of Bruno.
It comes from Portuguese, sabão, meaning soap bubble.
So then it's spelled that way probably because of whatever rules exist in Portugese, probably making it pronounced "sha" and have the "n" sound at the end. -dy is Oda's liberty to make it a name.
So technically it should be read "Saboady" and pronounced "Shabondy" I assume…
So it doesn't make a huge difference. They only use it a few more times, anyway.

The sha is probably an indication that it's a short a. "uh" not "aah". Like "Kya" is used to indicate "Ca".

Hey as long as the guy knows its supposed to be Sabaody and his poll is basically the equivalent of asking people whether Luffy should be called Ruffy instead, its fine.

The katakanization of "shabondy" probably reflects the portugese ponunciation. The a being a short a and the n is something else...

yeah, this happens when you take European languages and translate them to Japanese.
take Magellan. Spanish Explorer (so Spanish name)
name is written "Mazeran" in Japanese. How?! We have no Clue, even though it's not pronounced that way, but "Mazeran" always translates to "Magellan".
Same thing with Bach (the composer). his name is pronounced "Bahck" but the Japanese put his name as "Baha" (Bah-hah)
It makes little sense, but that's how it is. We don't put "Rufi" for Luffy's name, why? because Oda WROTE Luffy. this should have the same situation.
(And yes, I know I'm part of another fansub group, but I don't think there's any reason we can't both get along XD)

It's spelled out for you. There is no question about it. There's no interpretation. There is no opinion to be had. It's Sabaody. Period.

If you don't spell it Sabaody, then you're spelling it wrong.

How come NOBODY leaves "Juichinin no Choushinsei" In Japanese? If the scanlators were consistant about it, they would leave that in Japanese too. Why don't they? Because "The Eleven Supernovas" already sounds cool enough without having to be Japanese

Yeah… it has nothing to do the fact that Juichinin no Choushinsei is twice as long as the others and would be overkill to leave untranslated.

You want random. Try randomly deciding that one word should be misspelled so it reads like it sounds. This policy made even more inane due to the fact that you're translating a show into a language renowned for screwball pronounciation.

Comb, home, and shown all rhyme. Comb, tomb, and bomb all sound different. We have three ways to spell two/to/too, but only one way to say it. On the other hand, we can't agree on whether or not it's cat-sup or ketch-up.

I'm just amused at how far fdein will go to defend misspelling something. It's weird. Whether his group changes it or not really doesn't bother me. I just find it extremely interesting to see a fansub group that intentionally uses spellings they know are incorrect.

And Pongmo, this isn't a translation issue. The word is clearly spelled out in English. There's nothing to translate.

I honestly feel like that's because Kaizoku made the choice for Shichibukai and new fansubbers and translators have caught up with the manga and stuff, so now they get first crack at the terms. That's my guess at least. IMHO Eleven Supernovas sounds just as cool/uncool as Four Emperors or Seven Warlords.

Is fdein even in charge of the group, though. I mean, I think he mentioned that it was the translator's prerogative. I agree with Charagon, but I don't think it's a big deal either way considering it's written on the artwork. I guess the priority is on pronunciation, not spelling for their group?

1. My translator thinks it should be that way
2. Why should the people watching my fansub see something they don't like
I, honestly though, don't care much for it
it's just one word
being correct isn't always the best though, that's something to keep in mind
just like when yibis wrote Gum
