It's that time again. Perhaps the most popular entertaiment awards ceremony in the world airs tonight. That's right, it's the Oscars! Looks like they've got quite a show lined up with Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader, Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Frost/Nixon all vying for best picture. Of course we all know Heath Ledger is a shoe-in for best supporting actor. Also, Hugh Jackman is MC this year (never would've pictured Wolverine hosting the Oscars LOL). So will you be tuning in this year? What are your thoughts? The Oscars: a respectable award ceremony, or shameless self-indulging hoax? You be the judge.
The 81st Annual Academy Awards

I hate Heath Ledger for stealing the best supporting actor win. If it wasn't for his suicide I doubt he would even win, talent aside, it's all about politics. The deserving people never win, but it would be a greater insult to his memory not to give him the award since he didn't win Brokeback Mountain (where he was just as good as he was in DK).
I am happy my boy RDJ got the nom at least.
Oh, also I will blaspheme against the Oscars if Penelope Cruz does not win. She's in the category of Johhny Depp where she may get nominations but will never win because she's already loved and recognized enough. I really dislike the awards for its politics, Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet should have won best leading roles for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind for example, Winslet lost to.. Swank for retarded reasoning (stared in a movie that was sentimental towards Nazi Germany, and Oscars are decided by mostly Jewish panels).
-
Well, looks like you got your wish Refii. Penelope Cruz won best supporting actress.
-
When is this? Tonight? Oh well, I never watch it anyway. I hope Slumdog Millionaire wins best picture; it was such a good movie. Although I havn't seen any of the other ones :ermm:.
-
Yup, it's on tonight. Right now in fact, and they've announced 8 awards thus far.
-
So, who has played the Jack Nicholson drinking game yet? For every time you see the camera switch to Jack in the front row at the Oscars, you take a swing!
-
I think Heath Legder deserved that win whether he was dead or not. The Joker was FANTASTIC.
I'm reaaalllly annoyed at what they did to the song "Down to Earth" from Wall*E though. Why in the heck did they decide to "ethnic-it-up" and mush it between the Slumdog Millionare songs? It just didn't sound right at all.
Oh, and Ben Burt was ROBBED!
-
You'd end up very thirsty, I didn't see Jack once. Was he even there?
-
Well, I had a feeling Slumdog Millionaire would win best picture. Overall it was a pretty good ceremony. Also Sean Penn's acceptance speech was really funny.
-

That's a pretty extreme way of putting dude, and Ledger committed suicide? Never knew that.
His role as Joker was very good, but if there was an even better performance by another actor, then yeah they may deserve it.
…but you could always chalk it up to the Oscar peoples giving him the Oscar because he passed away, it'd seem pretty offensive seeing as his family was at the Oscars.
So really don't hate on Ledger, hate on the judges and the sympathizers.
I mean why would anyone kill themselves for an Oscar, what they're gonna brag about it in the afterlife?
Oh and I really liked Ledger in that one Knight movie where he had to do everything this royalty tells him to do to win her love
Also it isn't the first time that a dead actor was awarded the Oscar for his performance in a movie, wasn't there another one from the 70s who passed away but his performance awarded him the Oscar?Oh, also I will blaspheme against the Oscars if Penelope Cruz does not win.
I believe she won didn't she?
She's in the category of Johhny Depp where she may get nominations but will never win because she's already loved and recognized enough. I get your sentiment on the last sentence, but it's one of the many reasons why I don't give a shit about Oscars a lot. Oh and did Slumdog Millionare win an Oscar.
-
I liked Jack Black's comment during the Best Animated Film award. The 2008 Animation montage was just sad though.
-
Also it isn't the first time that a dead actor was awarded the Oscar for his performance in a movie, wasn't there another one from the 70s who passed away but his performance awarded him the Oscar?
Yep. Peter Finch for his role in Network
I believe she won didn't she?
Yes she did.
Oh and did Slumdog Millionare win an Oscar.
It won like 8, including best picture.
-
^I'll give that movie, Network a watch, but really, don't hate on Ledger, hate on those that voted for him.
Good job for Slumdog, I'll get the DVD when it comes out :)
-

I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE THIS ANYMORE!!!
Classic movie.
Good job for Slumdog, I'll get the DVD when it comes out :)
Agreed, I definitely have to see it now.
-
^Yeah someone at another forum told me about that quote XD.
Oh and my first sentence wasn't directed at you BTW, just in general for anyone feeling uncomfortable with Ledger getting the Oscar award. -
^Yeah someone at another forum told me about that quote XD.
Oh and my first sentence wasn't directed at you BTW, just in general for anyone feeling uncomfortable with Ledger getting the Oscar award.Yeah, I understand. I, for one, was not upset with him winning the award and think it was rightly deserved.
-

Wrong. Winslet lost to Swank when she did Million Dollar Baby, whom I think deserved it that year (not to take away from ESotSM). She won for The Reader because, well, it's a fantastic film, although I thought that Hathaway should have won it for Rachel Getting Married.
Based on your reasoning about Jewish panels and being sentimental about Nazi Germany, Tom Cruise would have been nominated for his 'stellar' performance in Valkyrie or 'Downfall' would have won in 2005 for Best Foreign Film.
-
I think the Jewish voting bloc would be more likely to simply not nominate movies that portrayed Jews in a bad light, rather than nominate movies that portrayed them in a good one. It hides the effect of their bias because it doesn't draw attention to them being there.
Just extending Refi's argument…I for one don't really know/care much about Oscars, except that some movies need them to complete the cycle of critical acclaim. Wall-E was one such show.
And eight Oscars is sort of ridiculous, Slumdog better be a good movie.
-
so what to say
first heath ledger deserved it for what i know about acting..
his performance of an psychotic crazy serial killer was just awesome..
i mean cmon even THE jack nicholson wasn
t THAT good in this role(but still legendary), and the joker is just that well-known and mostly acted figure so that bringing this chara in such a great new light–-iam glad with this decision(even haven`t seen all the other performances, but my reasons should be enough)next nicce thing...WALL-E got his oscar...just prayed for it...maybe after the king of lions the best animated film i have ever seen...just awesome and a nomination for best picture would have beeen more than okay...but whatever he got his deserved price..
best actor and actress...mhh iam glad with shaun penn always liked his play and yeah second time oscar winner :) as long as he don
t surpass jack nicholson iam okay with it :) also kate winslet ,i think she deserved an oscar since a long time...but haven
t seen these movies(even i read the reader and for my taste it wasnt good so she had to be good to give her chara an interesting touch ;)so iam not sure if the actor of "the wrestler" wasn
t in the end the true winner...mhh but maybe playing gay-charas is a ticket for an oscar---seeing philadelphia(here it was sure deserved )now to slumdog millionair..watched it yesterday at the same time the oscars started..
8 fucking oscars...best picture one of them
and i think absolutely correct..just a great movie, watch it it won`t be wasted timeso all in all it was a great event , liked the 5 former winners for the instruction of the nominees ,but the rest wasn
t my taste so nahh whatever it
s not the show which is important...just the actors, techniquer etc.. -
Well, being an Indian, I am mildly amused to see all the fuss over Slumdog. It's an amazing movie - yes, but seriously, was it really that good? And frankly, A.R.Rahman has directed far far better songs than "Jai Ho". I would have hoped Slumdog to get 3 Oscars - maybe 4 tops. But eight? That's eff-ing ridiculous!
But on the other hand, it's trully poetic how a low-budget pic that almost did not even make it to the theatres, took the world by storm!
-
Anyone seen departures? The film from japan that won best foreign movie, no one here mentioned it yet, and I thought this was a manga board. =P I'm gonna rent it as soon as it comes out here.
-
Oh and I really liked Ledger in that one Knight movie where he had to do everything this royalty tells him to do to win her love
A Knight's Tale?
I'm curious about Departures.
-

Manga and live-action Japanese films. Not exactly the same thing. But I am interested in seeing it now. I'd never heard of it before last night. And that line from the acceptance speech "Domo arigatou Mr. Roboto" was so funny
Oh, also the other Japanese guy (Kato, was it?) who won the best animated short film award. From the title I'm guessing it was a French film, but it was made by a Japanese man and he accepted the award in English. Gotta admire his tenacity for overcoming language barriers.
-
La Maison en Petis Cubes. Yeah, it's a Japanese animated short but with a french international title. The Japanese do that sometimes.
That's a pretty extreme way of putting dude, and Ledger committed suicide? Never knew that.
The police/coroners ruled out suicide, actually. There weren't any signs whatsoever to indicate it (no note, no pill-gorging, no emotional outbursts or reclusive behavior, no nothing). He just mis-balanced his meds.
Which makes his death even sadder, in a way, in that it was even more pointless. He wasn't even trying to die, he died for no good reason.

I'm pissed that En Bruges wasn't represented more. It was a deeper, more stimulating film than most of the winners, which were all way too predictable, by the way.
-
Just wanted to take a moment to note that despite the great things I've heard and what the director did in the past, Benjamin Button was the WORST expensive and 'good' movie I've ever seen.
What a boring as shit film. Cut like an hour from that monstrosity and MAYBE you have something. Worst of all they couldn't even adhere to their own goddamn science.
Why did that pos create such a big deal??? Because it was all about Katrina or some shit?
-
That's nice to know.
-
Well thank god you revived a several month old topic to tell us that! Where would we be without your nuggets of wisdom, Greg?
-
oh i LOVED benjamin button.
fer those who dunno, it's basically forest gump and titanic combined into one.
life story + really sad love story = me crying. D'=
-
Gump is cute, interesting and has that catchy theme.
Titanic I never saw so I won't say anything bad about it.
Two seconds into BB you know that she's going to be his daughter.
I think what drove me over the edge was the point where they felt it was necessary to make a mini-documentary about the affair he had with that ugly chick.
They could have cut that segment out and made it into its own film.
There simply was no payoff. It ends exactly as you think it will and the journey is nothing to brag about.
-
-
Greg why do you think people actually care about what is happening in your life
-
You're no fun
There are things I want to say, but as I understand it, it isn't just a couple of hours of DiCaprio money shots. So, lips are sealed.
Greg why do you think people actually care about what is happening in your life
How have you been recently Moria?
-
Greg why do you think people actually care about what is happening in your life
Greg is a master level troll.
You guys just don't see it.
-
No need for sarcasm now. Geez. I shouldn't have to put up with this kinda childish crap.
-
Japan? That magical land of wonder and amazement you keep complaining about?
;p
-
No need for sarcasm now. Geez. I don't have to put up with this kinda childish crap where I live in Japan.
i don't know if you were directing that to me but i wasn't being sarcastic
you really do have an overgrown unjustified sense of entitlement -
i don't know if you were directing that to me
No Moria, I was talking to ZKaiser.
I believe I asked you how you were and after you read, you strangely left wthout replying. But maybe you were just busy. If you need me though, I'm here for you man.
-
A Knight's Tale?
Don't forget that A Knight's Tale was the movie that had fake critics giving it praise. You don't make up fake reviews unless you know the movie is crap. About Titanic, funny story, my friends and i went to go see a movie, his mom came with us but went to go see Titanic. Our movie let out sooner so we went to wait for her in the theater showing Titanic. It was at the end where the chick and dude are on the ice and she says "i'll never let you go". Everyone in the theater was crying and a second later she let him go. We couldn't help ourselves(seeing how she said she wouldn't let him go) from laughing out loud.
-
Wow I lost track of this thread.. thanks Greg
I am happy Penelope won! I didn't expect it to be honest, but it's nice to be wrong and pleasantly surprised.
As for the Heath Ledger discussion, I apologize, couple of months later I remember just how little importance the Academy Awards really have on movies, they mainly affect actors need for approval.
I think he deserved the Oscar, but he also deserved it in other situations, it becomes more of an obligatory "in his memory" award. By achieving it a previous year, he would have achieved self-actualization while he was still alive and perhaps this would have improved his psycho-emotional state. -
Actually, the last thing Heath Ledger would have wanted was an academy award. He openly said he would've refused it if he won best actor for Brokeback Mountain as a matter of principal.
-
He didn't want to win an award for playing a gay cowboy?
-
I haven't seen anything like that in any articles I read but whatever. If you could post a link to such an article I would appreciate it.
But what's done is done, he won, and he'll probably never know. We have to move on, and more importantly his wife and daughter can as well.
