Well I guess Kitaro is over…but somehow I really don't see why they have to reair DBZ in such a prime morning slot on Fuji, particularly since that means they have to commit for it to close to 300 episodes.
(probably also has to do with the movie coming out alongside the 20th anniversary of the anime)

Well, airing one episode per week will take them almost seven years, indeed. But i can see it helping OP ratings even more than Kitaro does, it's Dragonball after all. I just hope someone sub this.

It's not reanimated right? Only aired in HD. What quality was is made in? It can't be higher quality than it was when it left Toei 20 years ago… Isn't this just going to use more disc space / cpg and gpu power?

Sure it's DBZ, but it's 20 years old and everyone seems to know the series by heart in Japan. Heck, even big anniversary airings like, say, Star Wars or Star Trek are on cable in this country…I don't mind a DBZ reairing in HD but I just really don't get why Fuji and Toei would put it in such a prime spot...and if it really will be there for the entire series from Raditz's arrival to Goku leaving with Ubuu.
And they also reediting the show to be about 100 episodes or so. That means the classic fillers are going to be cut, and good chance of the classic 10 episodes of Namek blowing to be cut down a bit.
FUNImation will probably use this as an excuse to re-release the series again.
I don't get it. How can they air it in HD if those episodes were made with a much lower resolution, like 20 years ago. If they reanimated the series with GOOD pacing, THAT would be awesome.

Maybe they're only going through Freiza, or only through Cell. And how are they gonna redo the voices? I mean, first of all, aren't some of the voice actors dead by now? They can't all have been as young as, say, Nozawa and Tanaka were then. And it seems pointless to revoice a show that was finished over a decade ago, especially when it's the same lines. What would be gained? It seems like a lot of wasted effort, unless it'll be just small redubs to get rid of filler or plot holes or something. Either way, this would be great to see. What are the odds of it being fansubbed...

Because the Path to Power movie pretty much covered all the highlights of the original Pilof story (the character introductions) and the Red Ribbon Army in 90 minutes. Yes, it missed a lot, but it really hit a lot of the high notes for something that short, so theres no real need to revisit the original DB material.

(The same thing happens in OP and Naruto) it was then filled with grunting, energy charging, and other characters having reaction shots of "Oh my gosh! He's so powerful"
And then there's the actual EPISODES of pure filler, especially between arcs. In the first arc alone, there were about 15-20 episodes of filler during the year of training. Goku having accidents on Snake Way, Gregory, Gohan and the Robot and the runnaway kids, Tenshinhan and Lunch, Gohan turning into a giant ape TWICE (only once in the manga…) Vegeta and Nappa ona planet of bug people, etc. then you figure once the actual fights arrived there was filler like Nappa running around and destroying fleets and stu... and anything with Bulma on Namek... the entire Garlic Jr. and Otherworld tournament sagas... Frieza and Cell transforming to their final forms took an ENTIRE episode... but took one panel in the manga. During the Frieza saga there was an entire episode of flashbacks of stuff that had just happened... During the Cell Games, 95% of the stuff with the camera crew was filler, when Gohan grew up he had LOTS of adventures as the Great Saiyaman, but Videl figured it out pretty quickly in the manga... etc.

In my head, the whole matter of filler in DBZ is sort of a "take it or leave it" matter. Toei did a good job in enhancing a good chunk of the world considering how little Toriyama was doing per week and how close they were. But for every imaginative and world-enhancing moment done in the anime, we got lengthy power-ups, nonsense and the "five minutes from Hell". If Toei does a "cut to the chase" version of DBZ using the '89-'96 footage, they better at least keep some of the filler that enhance the world without conflicting with Toriyama's vision.
And BTW: haven't seen "Path to Power" and I heard good of it…but at the same time I guess I thought Toei did a good job with the original DB and it seems more like the Drum or Alabasta movies for OP so it really wasn't on my mind.

path to power was a really good watch. kinda skips around a bit, definately.. but a very good watch

Yeah, pretty much what it is. A highight reel of the first 70 episodes in 90 minutes, with fancy super awesome animation. And Bulma with purple hair like she was always supposed to have. Its great for a DB fan, but it is what it is.

It's assumed because there are apparently only gonna be 100 episodes. There's no room for filler in there. Anyway, if this is gonna be on after One Piece, then I'll be able to watch.

This is pretty incredible news. It's gonna totally revive DBZ in Japan, and since we know Funimation is gonna want to get in on this, it could revive it in the US as well. It could be on TV again!
What am I thinking, dozens of countries around the world loved the show. It's gonna come back to all of them.
It sounds to me like Toei is trying to be faithful to the manga by cutting fillers and the extra bits of fighting. That's not necessarily a bad thing if you ask me, though. I really liked Goku vs. Frieza, but it dragged on longer than it needed to be. So, I wouldn't mind if it was cut down.

Which is strange since the DragonBall manga don't which is why it failed so miserably.
I've often wondered about that myself; seems like being supported by people who only want you there so the world can end in fire (with you going to Hell in the process) would be somewhat off-putting

Better audio quality? Since the sound effects are being redone and the soundtrack will have to be rearranged for the possible new pacing, that sounds about right. Maybe they should even change some lines.
Besides, as far as i know only Tenshinhan and Mutenroshi VAs died - and Roshi had a few different actors through the classic series anyway. Most of them are still pretty active, i think Nozawa is the oldest.

It's true that some of the original voice actors have died, but they've already been replaced in the newer video games. Most likely, they'll just use those replacement voice actors instead. Even Kame-sen'nin was voiced by someone else by the end of DBZ, since his seiyuu died before the end. They'd only really be screwed if Masako Nozawa (who was in her 50s when she recorded the show originally, and isn't getting any younger) died partway through. (桑原桑原)
As for re-recording, you're forgetting that the original series was recorded from start to finish in scratchy mono. Wouldn't you want a high-quality stereo– or surround-sound audio track to go with that retouched animation?

Sounds like the opening and closing are new, but the actual episode content is going to be the old footage, just… filler free and in newly created stereo sound and digitally cleaned up (like the Disney movies get cleaned up digitally to be brighter and sharper). Which is... pretty damn awesome.
I hope their standard is "If its in the manga, it stays." coupled with solid judgement on what the good filler is. 100 episode Dragonball could be AMAZING. Imagine the Frieza saga NOT sucking. The raditz battle was actually always better in the dub where it was four episodes instead of the almost 7 it was in the Japanese, and that STILL had filler...
Hrm. Average chapter takes about 7-8 minutes of airtime, so, 3 chapters per episode... and the Z portion of the manga was 325 chapters from Raditz' arrival... that actually comes out to be 108 episodes. wow. they really will have to absolutley cut all filler to do that. That'll really change the pacing and dramatics in some spots. I hope they have a real genuine enthusiastic fan in charge of the cuts that understands pacing and that SOME dramatic silences and long pauses need to remain intact...
pulls out manga they landed on Namek in chapter 53, and Namek exploded in in 134, for 80 chapters... about 25 or 26 eps instead of the paint drying 65 or so that it was...
yeah, I'll definatley be watching this along with One Piece every week. Too cool....

It's actually annoying. And I say this as someone whose life is where it is thanks to my fandom of DB.
DB isn't an anime or manga series over here. It's DB. It's like Doraemon or Anpanman or Sazae san. It's something everyone knows. Yeah okay, maybe they can't tell you that Porunga is 5x the size of Shenron but they still know it. Somehow it loses the magic when there are cheapo plastic Vegeta dolls at every electronics store or Goku-themed Schezuan-flavored chicken poppers at the local convenience store(s). There is no 'DB crowd' or 'DB fans', DB is DB. It's become a part of their culture, not simply a creation of it.
I'm not exactly excited by this news. It just means more releases and more (im)perfect collections.
What's next? DB bluray Dragon Boxes? It's for reasons like this I'm glad I've avoided the DVD releases like the plague. There will always be something better down the pike and Toei will be there to use it. I agree with this since it's smart business but rather than be excited about this news, it's something I've just come to expect.

Guess that's part of my lament of being an anime fan too. Once I had anticipation and had to hunt for the anime I really wanted. Now I can get pretty much anything I want and really don't want it due to the product. And I only got into it around '95-'96.
Hunting for anime now adays is more akin to how Gorilla's find food. They find a nice spot to sit and just randomly reach out for the nearest shoot.
Not sure if anyone is aware, but there was some talk about Toei's Philippines' studio (TAP) re-animating and touching up scenes into HD. The thread about popped up last month over at Daizenshuu EX's forums, which can be found here. As to how extensive this is, it's really unknown. So it's not just a simple "re-edit".
Personal thoughts? I'm mixed, but I'm interested to see a proper HD version of the series. The rerecording of the series is also a great plus, so it'll be great to finally hear it in stereo.

Everything will be redubbed, though the dialogue and voice-actors will probably be the same. The redubbing is only because the original audio-track was mono. As for how they'll make it look HD… Get the original film-prints out and scan them into a computer at a HD-resolution, I guess. It's not like 16mm-film really HAS a specific resolution in the first place.

The kanji used for "Kai" is "Modified" or "Changed"…makes sense considering it's a modified, 2-year version of DBZ.

Looks like Toei might be cropping the series for HDTV like FUNimation did for their remastered Season Sets. Compare these screencaps from the small ones seen on the ad:

I'm on Daizex almost non-stop, and I hadn't heard anything of that sort. I don't think that's even possible…
That's two very small, orange tinted screenshots from a Jump Issue.
Did Shueisha just make a mockup of shots from the old show? Did Toei send them new screenshots that Shueisha then cropped so the characters would look bigger on them so it looks better in a Magazine? Are those from the new Show at all?

Yeah, you should see some of the reactions on Daizex. It's as if anything remotely displeasing is comparable to having their mothers raped or something.
Like I said, it doesn't bother me when FUNimation did it because the other pros greatly outweighed the cons. Same with DBK now. A no-filler, no-dragging, remastered edition of the DBZ anime is a dream come true.
