NEW YORK – Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids during his 2003 American League MVP season with the Texas Rangers, four sources independently told Sports Illustrated in a report published Saturday.

Rodriguez's name appeared on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball's 2003 survey testing, according to a report on SI.com. That testing was conducted as part of a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association to determine if MLB needed to impose random drug testing for the '04 season.
When approached by SI on Thursday at a gym in Miami, Rodriguez declined to discuss his 2003 test results. "You'll have to talk to the union," Rodriguez said. When asked if there was an explanation for his positive test, he said, "I'm not saying anything."

I disagree.

Barry Bonds was always a hero to many baseball fans and the steroid use really shattered a lot of beliefs in the pristine, almost mythic quality of baseball players. Heck he wasn't just a local hero, he had international appeal as well - Hiromichi Kojima and the Lycaons of One Outs take a few cues from The Giants.

When one hears of all the legendary stuff from the golden age and see now that people can't achieve that kind of stardom without "cheating" it really dampers the spirit to go and watch major league games anymore.

Barry possibly getting off while Rodriguez won't doesn't really mean anything - the mere fact that they were accused and there was some evidence suggesting use has already damaged their reputation. It's like throwing a rock into a window but not shattering the glass - a dent was made, the damage was done.

The whole steroid affair is just bad news bears.

Considering a report mention his urine tested positive for steroids I doubt that he'll get off entirely. His reputation was already suspect prior to the allegations and what not after all is said and done he'll come out looking worse than O.J. after the murder trial.
