Shows licensed in other countries you've never seen

Once in a while when I'm browsing YouTube for anime, I see a comment that says something along the lines of, "wow, how nostalgic. This was a big part of my childhood, I remember first seeing this scene when I was 4 years old and being blown away."

I'm always confused by such comments, since the video I'm usually watching is in Japanese and was never dubbed, let alone aired or sold in the United States. The possibility of the poster putting up a load of lies always looms, but it's more likely in my view that the poster is international and happens to speak English.

So, for we of the international community - what shows did you grow up with in your country, and what shows were you surprised to learn nobody in Country X saw/knew about before the internet? What do we share in common? This applies to all generations too - some people who grew up in the 1980's would know the first anime ported to the US, but a 16 year old today might not know anime existed before One Piece.

We could also discuss why we think certain shows were never aired or were censored in our respective countries. More on that below.

I can give the example in the US of Gatchaman and GoLion as Battle of the Planets and Voltron - those shows are unheard of in other countries, but were huge in the US.

At the same time, I've heard Doraemon was dubbed/aired in other countries but it never made it to the US. I've always thought it was too Japanese-centric for the US, but it seems to have gained popularity proper in the international community as well.

There is one show I remember that I haven't ever seen anyone mention durring my 10+ years of surfing thee webs. I don't know if the name was changed, but I remember it as "Flint the Time Detective".

That show was weird….. even the opening where they're just dancing.

The series that stands out to me the most is Dr.Slump.
It's really enjoyable, too but the mix of kiddy characters and sex jokes pretty much ensures it wont find a massive audience in the west but it's a classic right alongside the original Dragonball in Japan.

i grew up with toonami. gundam wing, big o, outlaw star, dbz, voltron, thunder cats, tenchi muyo…and then at night was trigun/cowboy bebop

As a Canadian, I've never even seen Outlaw Star or Voltron.

On the flip side, we got more Sailor Moon episodes…... yay?

Here in Europe, us born in early 80's fondly remember such cartoons like Alfred J. Kwak and Around the world in 80 days, which my American friends rarely know. Do Americans know many european animation series in general?

Around the World with Willy Fog, Alfred J. Kwak, Moomin, Silver Fang and Once Upon a Time basicly sums up my whole childhood. Although Silver Fang is the only one of those which is 100% Japanese.

Many series in Europe got coproduced by several european broadcasting agencies and japanese ones. In general de europeans provided the ideas for the stories and the japanese did the animation. Or the japanese just took the stories and did it themselves, and the europeans followed later.

Besides those mentioned, there are many many more.
Calimero, sinbad, nils holgersson, the robinson family, nathalie, remy 'alone in the world', and I can go on and on and on and on and on, which I won't because I really don't know any of the english names for those and neither do I know if or if not they were shown in the US.

I really liked this one when I was really young:

wiki tells me it is called spoon obasan in english.

But honestly many of those series and even Alfred J. Kwak, eh especially Alfred J. Kwak, the latter parts where Dolf shows his true colours, I found them hard to watch when I was a little kid, they were very sad. :cwy:

This thread is getting off the rail but yeah now that I think about it the whole thing with Adolf, sorry I meant Dolf was kinda… I'm not sure how to put this... mature? My favourite episode was probably the one where Alfred and Dolf were trapped in a well.

I just checked. Alfred J. Kwak DVD is being released during next week in Finland. First 26 episodes. What a happy coincidence. I think I might buy it.

At that, I had no idea Ocean continued to do the DBZ dub until I heard about it here on AP like four years ago.

how I loved those two, still get goosebumps when I get my grip on an old episode. But as a kid my favourite used to be "Heidi"
Even now, almost 15 years later I still now some of the dialogues when watching an episode (No, I'm not embarressed)
and then there was was "Attack number one"… I started playing volleyball because I was so freaking obsessed with this series (but my volleyball abilities were pure fail)
However I never had the joy to watch things like thunder cats or gundam wing (and I think I'm too old to get into it now)
