Well, at least the guards are trying to contact each other, but they have no idea what's going on.
Chapter 529 "Beast Hell" Discussion

I think people are using backwards logic in regards to whether impel down is an effective prison. At this point, Luffy isnt escaping, hes going farther into the prison. Once he gets to Ace, then he will have to get out. There should be more than enough time for the guards to mount an effective resistance, unless luffy times his arrival to Ace with hancocks, momonga, etc.
With Impel Down, it seems that the only thing used to keep intruders out were the numerous battle ships and marines outside the gaol. Typically, if a pirate group attacked, the stronger guards would have plenty of time to organize and prepare (not to mention you would have to be crazy). However, a Shichi betrayed the world government, and Luffy, as opposed to trying to break out of the prison, is breaking further in. This act thwarted the counter measures for intruders like luffy, plus his goals run contrary to what the designers would have expected of prisoners. For example, there was the hole in the ground in the bladed forest leading to level two. But that was more psychological torture for the prisoners on lvl 1 than anything, because if you were weak enough to be placed on the first level, what chance at surviving a level down do you have? And why would a prisoner move farther from freedom anyways?

@My detractors.
None of what you said is in response to me, I presume, since everything I said still stands…

Interesting Chapter.
Who would've known that WB had that much influence amongst the world? When the marines mentioned new world pirates on the move and Croc mentioned the silver medallist (a.k.a. HATERS), this war really doesn't look in WB's favor.
It was interesting to hear that Ace and Jimbei almost killed each other in a fight, putting them on a similar level. But, by the way they said it, this was some time ago so I can't say for sure. They may be on completely different levels by now.
And Oda might be letting Luffy "breeze" past each level because of the time strain. When Hancock and Luffy entered Impel Down, it was stated that the execution was 33hrs away. So yea, they're kinda on a tight schedule.

Good chapter, but not impressive. I think things will only heat up when Luffy reaches Ace. Then, it will be complete escapee team vs. ID security. I am eager to see Hancock meeting Ace.

This whole thing still begs the question:
If WB pretty much owns the New World, why hasn't he been to Raftel to claim One Piece yet?
-
Probably because he doesn't know where Raftel is.
-
This whole thing still begs the question:

He doesn't own the New World. Remember, there are 4 emperors out there, all probably competing with each other and preventing each other from getting to One Piece. Another thing to consider is that on one seems to know where Raftel actually is.
-
Or maybe he knows where it is, but since he can't "hear the voice of all thing", he can't decipher its secrets.
-
This whole thing still begs the question:

Maybe he has already and put it back cuz he did not want to become PK? Maybe in a story book kind of way he's only still a pirate waiting for another pirate worthy enough to fight him on par or surpassing him like Roger did.
Maybe he' senile and keeps forgetting?
Maybe he doesn't give a fuck about the treasure and feels "The Whitebeard" >>> One Piece? lol
Maybe since Roger already found it he doesn't want any part of it cuz you know 2nd place just means you're the 1st loser.
Who knows what that Edward Newgate is thinking. The man only respects other pirates around his age lol.

Newgate: I AM THE WHITEBEARD!!
Luffy: Who the hell is this Ojii-san?
-
@Thousand:
Robby, that may be however at the end of the day, if Luffy is to become Pirate King, he has to beat the strongest person of that time. It is inevitable.
Yes, to become Pirate King, Luffy will have to be aknowledged by everyone as the strongest, conquer the grand line, and find One Piece. But Luffy doesn't want to CAUSE trouble, he just wants to have a good time and defend his friends if need be.
To become Pirate King, he does NOT need to overthrow the current world order or create chaos, which defeating whitebeard, at this point in time, would do. (He'll inevitably change the current world structure because its corrupt, but thats NOT a requisite to becomeing the king, its just something Luffy will end up doing because its right.)
Later, once Luffy has conquered the line and been aknowledged and is actually at a tier with with Whitebeard and had the acclaim and reputation and authority to be Yonkou level, at that point, yes, he could fight Whitebeard, but at that point Luffy would have gained respect, which Whitebeard seems the type to aknowledge. They'd probably have a "for fun" fight just to see who is strongest, but with Ace and Shanks, and soon to be Jimbei as a common link between them, there is not, and will not, be any reason to have a dramatic life or death fight between the two, because they're both good guys that care about their families and protecting those that need it.
As a result, from a story perspective, Luffy fighting WHITEBEARD, the strongest man in the world, is moot, and would cause massive chaos. On the other hand, Luffy fighting XXXXX, the NEW strongest man in the world, who defeats Whitebeard and sows chaos, (and is thus strogner than Whitebeard anyway, and and actual badguy. At THIS juncture, Blackbeard seems the guy to put the money on.) where a dramatic life and death fight giving it all you got is WAY more interesting and makes way more sense.
Luffy will eventually have enough respect and props to rule the world and keep everyone safe, and he WILL fight the strongest man at that point, in the world to prove he's the top tier. But Luffy is a long long way from that tier yet, and Whitebeard's time is NOW, the war is NOW. It just makes no sense for it to be Whitebeard, basically a goodguy, to be the big fight at the end of the game, when dramatically its way way more interesting for someon else to take his title thats actually nasty and NEEDS to be taken down.
Not even getting into the WG, or the ancient weapons, or Dragon's revloution….
-
I am just loving Jinbei more and more. He's awesome. I so want him to team up with Luffy to save Ace since I've assuming that by the time Luffy gets to level 5, Ace will be on his way to the execution site. Jinbei could be a huge help to Luffy.
-
Im curious as to who are those pirates who are locked in the same level as Ace,Jinbei and Crocodile.
-
@robbybevard:
I think the chaos that results from taking out the strongest man in the world is far more interesting than just having one more inevitable fight for Luffy. Just because its been established that there's a powerful guy out there does NOT mean Luffy has to fight them. Out of 8 Shichibukai, Luffy has gotten a future Queen out of one of them, isn't going to NEED to defeat Kuma probably since Kuma seems to have a positive agenda for Luffy, and is probably NOT going to fight Jimbei given how Jimbei is getting on with Ace, and Mihawk is only going to be a friendly fight for Zoro at the end probably.
Out of 4 Yonkou, well, Shanks is his idol, they're NEVER going to fight, not seriously anyway.
There's like 8 Supernova crews, but I can't imagine taking the time to stop and fight all of them one by one.
There's no need for Luffy to beat every powerful guy in the world. Whitebeard falling serves the story in a much larger way (including what it will do to Ace) than simply having him stick around as a final boss. Especially since we're likely to see everything he's got in the coming war. Admirals and Shichibukai as well, it should by all accounts be… dare I say it... EPIC.
Particularly since this very chapter is emphasizing the fact that there's LOTS of other really strong guys out there and the new era is coming.... And also, Whitebeard isn't in his prime anymore, taking him out would not be the same as taking him out 22 years ago.
I do think Luffy and Whitebeard will meet before Whitebeard dies though, so that mutual respect can be gained and Whitebeard can say something about entrusting the next generation. I really don't think its needed for Luffy to take out Whitebeard tho. Particularly when someone else fresher and younger and likely nastier is going to be taking his place as "The World's Strongest Man."
Also, from everything we'e seen and heard, Whitebeard is a GOOD guy, that loves his crew and protects the innocent, that Ace and many fishmen wholeheartidly admires. We wouldn't want to see Luffy taking him down anyway, especially now knowing how the balance works and how important Whitebeard's rep is. Luffy knocking him down a peg, even in a friendly fight, would only screw the world up and hurt Whitebeard's reputation and influence. It seems much better storywise if someone else does the dirty deed that throws the world into chaos, and Luffy fixes it after.
Beautifully stated, I'm just quote it
-
Newgate: I AM THE WHITEBEARD!!
Luffy: Who the hell is this Ojii-san?
Luffy knows who Shirohige is, I think. When Ace said he was part of the Shirohige pirates, Luffy didn't ask, "Who's he?" and instead said he'd have to beat him, then. Hell, friggin Usopp knew who Shirohige was, and that's from a kid growing up in a tiny island village, so I'm pretty damn sure that Luffy knows who he is, too.

Not till now. The Shabondy Archipelago arc was a lot better. Till now I actually prefer the Kuja isle too. But we're still not even at level 3(they're going there now), so I expect things to heat up from level 4 and later on.

agreed.
but with Croc now officially in the mix, i'm hoping for another arc at the caliber of Enies Lobby (still my fave)

What you talking, boy.
-
Dumb idea:
Luffy and crew are fast, and once the WG (via mushi-comms) figures out where they are, they're gone already. The WG may have the power to stop him, but they're slow.Typical bureaucracy.
-
-
Probably WhiteBeard still haven't reach the last island because is probably a island that need certain requirements before entering or is a island that pops once a certain time.
-
Wow, this arc is incredibly boring. Impel Down is boring, that's a lot of wasted potential… Probably the only arc in the entire series, at least I can't think of any others, that I outright dislike. A 3-man team is running around in what's probably the most secure place in the OP world, for hours, without getting caught. None of the beasts are impressive in the least and there's still no sign of anyone coming to seize them.
Jump really hasn't been doing well for the past few weeks.

while its lacking thus far in action, i'd say it more than makes up for it in nastalgia and intrigue
-
Where'd he say that?
Somewhere in an early SBS or in an interview. He also said something like it'd be for a special character or that basically the character with the eye patch won't be a waste.
I think they should be more abundant in a pirate manga but we'll see what Oda does with it.

This whole thing still begs the question:
If WB pretty much owns the New World, why hasn't he been to Raftel to claim One Piece yet?
Because Captain Jack Sparrow stole it and hid it in a jar of dirt.
It's probably not on Raftel. And Roger may have discovered how to put One Piece (a) in the deepest trenches of the sea floor, (b) underground so deep most people will give up digging it, in space, (d) in another dimension, (e) his home town all along, or (f) he may have spent it all (or given it away) except for the Rio Poneglyph.

luffy took them by surprise and they can't just throw in guards to seize them because the beasts in level 2 would attack them. luffy will probably get to level 4 and there he will have to fight off marines since that's where i'm assuming the powerful guards are being used. the prisoners in level 1-3 don't matter that much since the marines have people that can take them out easily. prisoners on level 4 and beyond are powerful enough to have plenty of strong marines guard them just in case they escape.

Might just be me, but…..
SKY ISLAND, ANYONE?
I know we got to see a "silhouette" of it a loooong time ago, but we didn't even see an ocean around it, if I recall. It might be like Skyeia and there's a tower of dirt smack dab in the middle. Or I could just be speculating based on nothing
-
A 3-man team is running around in what's probably the most secure place in the OP world, for hours, without getting caught.
A 1 man Shichibukai level badass with assistance sneaking in to begin with, has been running around for MINUTES, and has been identified and is only now entering the mid tier security, after already having some trouble with the low level security, while accidentally dragging a couple of other guys along.
-

What do you mean 'for hours'? Likely it's only been a few minutes (maybe 10?). Recall that Momonga said that they only had a very short time to spend at Impel Down so that they needed to make it quick. Seeing as how she hasn't even made it to Ace yet, that's a good indicator that not very much time has passed at all.
-

Lol, I overlooked this.
I agree. I mean Luffy could be fighting a life and death battle on each floor until he becomes a godlike superhuman on the bottom floor.
WHAT IS THIS??? DRAGONBALL???
Luffy sneaks in, and then immediately gets caught up with Buggy's escape attempt, squashes the Bulgori in an instant, fly through the forest of sharps, drop down, meets a monster, beats it in one hit and takes out the control room at the same time, meets Mr. 3, gets chased by more monsters until meeting the sphinx, then messes around and gets the floor broken. This all happened in less than an hour.
I admit that the security enforcement seems lacking compared to Luffy, but compared to Buggy and Mr. 3, they're outmatched.
-
this arc is WAY more interesting than TB.
-
Neat Chapter… haha.. I love the prison break league formed by Buggy and Mr. 3... somehow they fit well together.. haha.. Mr. 3 joins Buggy's crew?.. haha.
I agree with people.. the monsters are dissapointing at best.. and are more like comic relief.. no serious enemies here. I'm thinking things will get more serious in level 3.. and definitely in level 4.
I guess there is a level 6.. and someone is kept there... atleast from the diagram of the place... and Oda giving us that "rumor" probably makes it certain that we're in for a surprise.
I would have guessed that Gold Roger's right hand man would be in level 6.. except we already have him... so who could be down there?.. hmm... Luffy's mom? grandma? Gold Roger's mom?.. who knows.. hahaha... I get the feeling Oda is going to knock us off our feet again... I think Croc is just the beginning... ID is full of goodies for Luffy to discover.
I think WB is totally badass.. one word from him.. and everyone basically stops whatever the fuck they were doing.. and pretty much leave the island in peace... total power, total presence.. just EPIC. Luffy still has a long way to go.
If Luffy makes it down to Ace with Mr. 3 and frees both Ace and Jinbei, I think they can pretty much destroy anything that comes their way.
Croc and the rest of the idiots better shut the hell up... I think Ace/Jinbei will give them ass kicking of their lives... if given the chance... nobody insults the old man infront of Ace and gets away with it.
-
-
Thank you very much. That sounds pretty intriguing…
-
nobody insults the old man infront of Ace and gets away with it.
Seems to me that a bunch of people just did. Let's hope that Ace and Jimbei are willing to ignore it when/if they get freed from their restraints later on.
-
I would have guessed that Gold Roger's right hand man would be in level 6.. except we already have him… so who could be down there?..
hm… left hand man? ^^
-
How about WB's old Right hand man.
Marco, Dozu, and obviously Ace aren't old enough to have been top members of his crew during Roger's time. Will be very disappointed if this plot point is never brought up, since it seems important.
Incredibly disapponted in Oda if the plotpoint is never brought up, Dozu&Marco are much older than they seem, Dozu&Marco are slightly older than they look and WB had Teenage hands going against Rayleigh&whoever(doubtful), WB fought Roger with fodder crew, or they all just kicked the bucket since then and won't be relevant.
Newgate has badblood with his old First Mate, who busts out after hearing the good news to make everybody his bitch. Rather see that than some evil ex-admiral(though wouldn't mind) or have level 6 be where Ace&Jinbei currently are. Kinda don't see the point in introducing Roger equivalent of Sanji, especially since Rayleigh seems to be a combination of both SH's already.
-
I thought that Arlong was in ID (from the cover story)… too bad we didn't get to see him (if he was even in there)
-
Something I didnt quite get…
Was it that Jimbei almost killed Ace, or they both almost killed eachother...
its the comment Jimbei makes after Ace saying he almost got killed by him, Jimbei says: Well that as goes for the both of us...
All and all I find Transalting or Jimbeis speak annoying as hell, its a bit hard to understand at times...

Yeah, it was in an interview.
So far all of the pirate staples have only been used on hardcore people:
Bandanna = Zoro
Dagger in mouth = Zoro
Peg-leg = Zeff
Hook = Croc
Bird on Shoulder = Lucci (I'm hoping for this to be replaced by a badass
with a mini Southbird)Eyepatch = ?????

Well a sword isn't actually a dagger:/

I recently realized that no one is talking about this yet, or at least it seems too quiet. In the next chapter, it seems almost certain that Bon Kurei is coming back! And, next is level 3! I'm shocked no one's speculating what it will be like!
Considering what Bon Kurei has been like in the past, like him or hate him his reappearance into the manga will be something special. I dunno, maybe he'll kick something (the sphinx?) and make some okama speech. I've never liked Bon Kurei that much but I'm actually looking forward to it next chapter.

Although I'm looking forward to the return of Bon Kurei as well, my favorite Baroque Member has always been Daz Bones. Once I see him head will explode.

This answers the question that if fishmens are affected by fire attacks, if ace already have his df when they fought.
About jinbei's way of talking, it really annoys me alot, but i think fishmen speaks another language.LOL, and he's getting hard time speaking the human language in OP world.
