Uh, the only explanation was chapter 358.
And as far as the technology level goes for him, think "cannon," not "heat seeking missle."
-
this is the grandline technology, like they said when usopp asked how a pistol can eat a fruit.
-
actually, technology seems pretty advanced in one piece. Nami talks about gas prices on the way from arlong park.
The snails work like cell phones, and they had all those gambling machines in croc's casino, right? -

yea i forgot a bout the gambling machines.
but i just never se any one else in one piece is a cyborg, and it just make me confuseand if the technology is already modern, why don't they have an aeroplane ?
-
Like I said, specific things. Franky is not "digital" or anything.
They probably have planes, or will, but right now in their world it's all about the sea.
-
I think some parts of the world are more advanced than others. After all, no one knew what a Sea Train was before they got to W7.
-
From a technological point of view, it's impossible for Franky to turn himself into a cyborg, but from a "kiddish" view, he can, by just replacing his skin and organs with metal. It's fantasy, you can't get hung up on these things.
-
Franky only seems to be a simple cyborg, with just reinforced limbs and appendages, and add-on weapons stuff. He still is mostly human underneath all that bulletproof things, I think. His mind doesn't require to be synchroed with whatever machinery… he seems to be a very simple cyborg, just enhancements from the outside that is still controlled by his muscle.
-
Yeah, it all just goes into the fantasy thing. I mean, he has full control of his fingers, yet his hand is only connected by a chain. Just gotta go with the flow there.
-
I think the tech level is wherever it needs to be.
Even the little bit of the series I've seen has made me go  with some technical elements– specifically cooking done on what are obviously gas stoves, and universally accepted paper currency (which, in the western world, was in its infancy in the pirate era, and decidedly nontrustworthy). I'd also speculate that to build a delicate 5-story palace for the Fishmen's leader would prove beyond the architecture of the time-- traditionally, large buildings needed either huge thick walls or buttresses.
Possibility: If the area we see in OP is a small region in a larger world, it could well be a 2000-era tech level in the outside world, but only some products have penetrated the OP area. Much like how if you go to some regions of the real world, they've picked some, but not all, of the technologies you'd see in others. Some nations have no electricity or railways, but do have broadcast radio, for example.
-
I like the way it is. I'd hate a total technological area, with computers and all. It'd make the whole sailing thing look really stupid.
Oh, and the "pirate age" thing only applies to their world, which is why characters like Nami can wear skirts similar to what we'd see.

It has been already established that on the Grand Line the time on the different islands developes differently. Vivi said that there can be islands that are in their phrehistoric stage (such as Little Garden) and islands that developed much further in technology.
Personally I still think that the´s the chance that the Strawhats will encounter a machine island. But with machine I don´t mean something like Star Wars or Star Trek technology. Something like the technology used in the movie Wild Wild West (i.e. the giant spider etc.) would actually work perfectly in the One Piece world.
-
sometimes i think that the lost history which robin search for could be a future like world with high technology and/or more like the real world.

**Wild Wild West….that's how I meant to describe the cyborg thing. While it's a HUGE stretch, it doesn't really go beyond the time frame.

Yeah, at least the movie was good for something I guess.

His stomach is replaced by a fridge. And judging from the size of it, most of his organs must be gone. There's no explanation except fantasy really. The wild wild west comparison is a good one.
-
And don't forget the ancient weapons described on the "Poneglyphs"
Those most be the peak of technology of the ancients
Probably they're much beyond the technology that is used now
Or else why would the World Goverment be after them ?
-
Sailing and higher technology can be joined if a decent explanation can be made. For example, in a world where the water is noticably corrosive, iron clad steamboats wouldn't last long enough to be worth the cost and effort, and airplanes would etch and rot the first time they went through a raincloud.
(free association)– Corrosive water-- acid rain-- a high tech society "fell" and recovered to the level of sailing ships and piracy. Some of the stranger characters may be actually mutants.
-
The idea of there having been a lost world of greater technology has crossed my mind before also. That would almost be cliche, though, don't you think? But I also wonder if Franky's knowlege of Pluton somehow aided him in building his cyborg body. Just a thought.
-
AT that moment when Franky made himself into a cyborg using all those scraps in the ship…i was just speechless..
How can he manage to turn himself into a cyborg...imagine he did all those by himself and not with some surgeons or technicians to assist his transformation...Im sure that it felt really painful since he didnt have any anesthesia induction to himself
imagine the blood loss he might have experience during that moment....
And putting those scraps into his body which are probably not sterile would probably cause a growing infection in his body!!---okay, that was just from a surgical point of view---
But anyways, this is manga...anything could happen, and we all know how fantasy is different from reality in many views!!!
-
Bon Clay's old boat used a steam engine like those old paddleboats.
And what about the Wavers?
Theyre sort of like Jet ski's and Roller blades and Skateboards…I think they even have motor boats. -
It's pretty funny to discuss technological inconsistencies in a world of Devil Fruits…

LOL, so very true. Don´t give us any ideas or we´ll start discussiong biological and physical inconsistencies too.

the lost history is a future world.in the year 965526232654 the humans destroyed themselves in a nuclear war, only a few humans, animals and plants survived but they were deformed from the nuclear radiation.the people looked strange, animals were grown to giant monsters and some fruits changed their dna.these fruits were called devil fruits from now on because they gave its eater strange powers.
but the people gave their knows about the destroyed technologie to their (deformed) children and they gave it to next generation and so on.
thats how it work in the op world. -
Hahahahaha!
That could possibly a theory! -

Hmm, reminds me somewhat of Monster Rancher though it indeed would work with OP. After all, they can´t say that the Ancient Weapons have the power to destroy the world it was never tested in the first place.
-
or it could be that the all the pirates running around stopped any chance of advancement and communication of technologies
-
So is it like atlantis  ???????
where they got more modern technology but they just dissapear  ? -
technology we have seen are quite outrageous. Dials that work with everyday life, snails that don't move but transmit people's speeches. a cyborg with a fridge in his tummy(wtf?). The climatact with a wierd finisher(2 toy birds with a spin). I wouldn't be surprised if more were to come, maybe an MOTORBOAT will appear in OP. Wouldn't that hasten the pace for the pirates eh? But i'm still curious, since usopp is good at inventing, why not an motor?
