I've been watching one piece for a good long time now, but ever since one episode when Ace pretty much called his brother "Special" at the start of the Alabasta arc, and commenting on how he is glad that Luffy's crew can help his "special" brother, I've always had this suspection.

He seems always forgets half the people he meets. He can easily "push" himself, and his high tolerance for pain. He has a childs mind despite being 17-18 years old "not childish, I mean he is a child". He lack social inhibitors at times. His disregard for social rules "umm pirate?". May I go on?

Granted, I would actually enjoy the series even more if this is true, since that would defenatly be different, and makes the story even more inspiring .

Before I respond, I feel the need to get something off of my chest. For years, I've been told that I have a mental disorder. I've been told that I had ADD for most of my earl life, and more recently (about 5 or so years ago), I've been diagnosed with Aspergers (yeah, that one who's symptoms seems like a description of your average geek). I will say right now though that despite what any psychologist has said about me, I am not mentally handicapped. Sure, I may be a bit obsessive about one or two things. Sure, I may be terrible at nonverbal communication. Sure, I may be unable to cry over the death of someone I actually know personally. Sure, I may be terrible at remembering that most people don't respond well to having their mistakes pointed out. However, I don't allow those things to be a disadvantage, they even come with the advantage of being rather good at math and proofreading computer code. I don't let my mental state be a handicap, simply a difference.

Now look at all of that stuff that's been said about Luffy. Does he let those things be a disadvantage? No! Infact, it even seems to help him. His childish nature that even shows up in some of his attacks (like Gomu Gomu no Mikata Robo) seems to leave him more willing to try things that others would simply dismiss as stupid or dumb. His simplistic mind even seems to be more suited to reaching a state of "mushin" (go ahead and wiki it) than those of other people. He's mentally different, but not mentally handicapped.

I completely agree with that. Anything that any ""sane"" person would think is completely ridiculous does not stop him one bit, in fact, it usally helps him.

I love One Piece and all of its characters, and plan on following this series till it ends, but dang if that doesn't start looking suspectious after a while.

Well, after finishing several hours of voluntary community service, I can say there are many that function completely well in society, and you would never know anything was different without sufficient time. I notice some similarities from him and people I know, but that would have been boring to read.

Good god, people. It seems everyone has an entirely different idea about what they mean when they're referring to Luffy's mental efficiencies.

First off, to those who believe him to be mentally retarded: I can say from experience and years of working within the Sp. Ed. community that he by no means has an actual cognitive deficiency. He learns quickly and understands most concepts that are explained to him without a condensed explanation. He's simply uneducated, as evidenced by the fact that he doesn't read the newspaper or that he was raised in the wilds by his grandfather Garp.

As for those who believe he has Attention Deficit: I'm going to keep this one simple and point out that as of late, everyone is being diagnosed with ADD or ADHD these days. Overdiagonosis means you'll see the symptoms everywhere. He's just flaky, that's all.

And to those who refer to him as a genius and therefore rule out retardation: know that in all families who have a member with genius IQ levels has a DIRECT blood relative with autism, Asperger's Syndrome, or some other mental retardation. In fact, many people with IQ genius tend to be afflicted with Asperger's. The link between the two is accepted to be genetic, and some believe that they ARE the same gene. So don't rule out the fact that even though he shows genius intellect, he may still have to ride the short bus.

Yep, it's not that Luffy's stupid, it's more of a fact that he values things differently from what a normal person would value for their survival. He has completely different proportions.
