but does One Piece have the most "do nothing" time in the anime? It honestly seems like there is more time seeing luffy breathing hard than things actually happening. I know that you have to show Luffy breathing hard to show the viewer that he is fatigued and injured…but do you really have to spend 30 seconds just panning over him like that? I don't watch a lot of different anime..but of the ones i've watched (Death Note, Code Geass, Naruto, Berserk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Samurai Champloo, Black Lagoon) One piece is the most difficult to watch because it seems like the story is progressing so slowly. It might just be me..

I agree for the most part, but undoubtedly there are probably worse offenders out there. Obviously it's all very much intentional on Toei's part, and if it helps in keeping filler to a minimum, as I'm sure it already has, then I can continue to bear it.
But yeah, annoying as it is, I'd take that time filler tactic over 10 minute Uchiha massacre flashback #3653.

Toei does every thing possible to make something last longer in order to stay behind the manga. It's always been like this. But it's the price we pay to keep getting the current story, other series have a faster main plot but tons upon tons of filler arcs.
Hell, some have both.

Animes like Death Note, Code Geass, and Samurai Champloo can more easily avoid this issue because the entire story is short. Animes like One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are long and still being written in manga form so the corresponding animes have to stay at the same pace or slower. As others have mentioned, there are various tactics that the anime teams can employ to fill the time, but they have to choose one or several of them regardless.

I Dont see how it is better than filler..you would rather watch useless things like Luffy Breathing Hard or Magellan staring at him than have those parts skipped and have some filler where there will actually be combat. If you took all of the useless parts of the anime and put that time into filler I wouldn't mind at all. At least it's SOMETHING other than recurring images of someones body moving up and down. Pure laziness IMO.

Haha yeah….it just severely pisses me off to wait a whole week for an episode to be extremely disappointed when the episode is 75% of the camera panning over a character. I love One Piece..but that shit is ridiculous.

It's not that easy. These things have budgets. Creating original filler is more expensive than just extending some useless scenes and recycling animation to waste a little time. As more money gets put into original filler stuff, less can go towards developing new animation for canon material.

Sure it is annoying, but it is one of the evils of anime. Personally, I would rather have some panning, no matter how much, rather than filler, which tends to be awful for most anime. Look at at Bleach, they are about to end their 2nd set of filler for one arc and it was painful after the first five episodes. A little panning and breathing is much better then 40+ episodes of filler.
Although I will agree that Magellan vs. Luffy was a little much.

put the right music with it and given how dire the situation is… these pauses can become quite dramatic. I really didn't feel it was too long at all. DragonBall Z aside, there have been worse "long pause" moments throughout One Piece. And besides, it just kind of fit for this battle. Being severely poisoned added to his struggle to even stay on his feet.

Yeah, apparently he's fine with Naruto flashbacking to the same long scenes every single week. I don't know how many times i've seen the Uchiha massacre or Jiraiya learning about the "prophecy" over the last few months.
If you watch Naruto, you should be more than used to dragging and nothing happening since a long time ago. You survived the Sasori arc, everything's gonna be alright.

Because it takes significantly more than a week to make an anime episode. There's a lot that goes into it. That's why the episodes aren't all directed by the same person week to week. Also, they need at least a little wiggle room to include various numbers of pages/chapters as they see fit.

Because the process of planning, drawing, animating, coloring, composing, and voicing a twenty-four minute long show that airs weekly takes a lot longer to do than just drawing the chapter. An average anime episode takes roughly a month to complete, I believe, while Oda and his staff could probably bang out a single chapter in a week's time, give a few days or so. (His schedule was said to be something like ''three days sketching, three days drawing'' in an SBS)

It didnt bother me A) because I read the manga and B) I thought it had a good dramatic affect. I would definitely not like a episode only once a month because I wouldnt want to wait that long and I think the anime episodes for the arc after this Impel down will be amazing
