I've been told I have strange taste in Manga; the only 'mainstream' one I collect is One Piece. Here's some of my favorites:
Kinnikuman & Kinnikuman Nisei (aka Ultimate Muscle)
From Eroica With Love
Banana Fish
Parasyte
air gear
blame and
Q.KOchan(i like the story and art. I just hate the author)If you want to know why go on the animes(or mangas) you regret you watched tread
I support Parasyte
"Dead Leaves", definitely "Dead Leaves". If you liked the animation in "Gurren Lagann" you should check out this great OVA that the director of that series did several years before. The story is stupid but it works when you see the action-comedy factor in action.
Anything by Takehiko Inoue, specifically Slam Dunk.
3x3 eyes and Blue Seed, anything by that guy actually, too.
Comic Party
Nodame Cantabile!!!
Those series are all SUPER popular overseas, but not in NA.
Akagi, Kaiji, One Outs.
How is air gear a cult hit? i thought that was standard battle manga?

I don't think Kinnikuman classifies as a cult hit particuarly in Japan.
just because it's generic doesnt mean its unpopular and is good.
Whats popular in japan doesnt really matter, does it? Since most likely, none of us live in japan (A few do) im talking about manga that dont have much recognition in the online manga/anime scene….
oh and
Hyde and closer magic ban removal
EDIT i support akagi
So we are not going by the definition of "cult manga" from Bakuman? so we can propose any manga even standard shonen battle mangas as long as they were underrated?

Something being a cult hit - be it a movie, a tv series, a book etc - usually means it's hugely popular among a small group but not widely known outside that group. Nothing to do with genre, really.
Double Arts, I liked it. Few others did too, but not too many, which I guess would make it a "cult hit" that unfortunately got cancelled.
I enjoy Homunculus, too, but I don't really know if it is popular or can be considered a cult hit. I don't think many know about it (well, because it belongs to the seinen category).
I gotta go with JoJo. Its huge in Japan but here it gets nothing. There are hardly any sites for it and not alot of translators but the few sites there are the fans are die hard about it. As am I. :)
Akagi, Kaiji, One Outs.
The first two series apply to me as well. I'm in the process of checking out One Outs, too.
Could Monster be regarded as a cult hit? I have no idea how popular or unpopular it is.

Yoska's explanation was what I was basing my choices on; while Kinnikuman is a huge thing over in Japan, in North America knowledge/appreciation of it is virtually non-existant, save for a small group of intensely loyal fans.
I'm gonna go with Gensomaden Saiyuki. It's pretty damn amazing, but it's not really well known.
Rebirth is my particular obsession– although it's full of cliche parts, it's put together in a very competent way.
Hentai Kamen, which only took two volumes to prove that perverts are greater than bikers.
i feel like elaborating now….
Law of Ueki: It is a very well done battle manga, goreless, similar to the styles of getbackers, and gash bell. It has a very random and non cliche parts to an otherwise streamlined manga, and a "never give up" subtext to the extreme,
EX
"It's dangerous to walk across lava while carrying three people"
That's GAR if there ever was gar
speaking of that meme...
Akagi- it's about mahjong.... just letting that sink in :)
It is also very psychological. hell i dont even know how to play and i love it.
another psychological series is chaos head.
Personally, i got into it through the anime, but the anime isnt that great.
the visual novel is much much better. just wiki it
Zetman is a very good and very bleak seinin manga along the lines of gantz or vangabod. in terms of intensity, id say it's more sickening than berserk, even though berserk is slightly more graphic. Not for minors.... even though im a minor >_>
finally
hyde and closer. its very very stereotypical manga, however it is a very very well done mainstream manga, though it reaks of familiarity to other manga such as gash bell and reborn. It is worth giving a shot.
