So I got a brand-spanking new computer for Christmas, so I no longer have to worry about my current one exploding on me…

...but it came installed with Vista, and I want no part in that shit.

I have a spare XP disc, but it errors on me when I try to do a regular format/install... anyone here have any experience with doing this kind of thing?

I don't want to do a dual boot, I want to completely get rid of this shit.

Could you please give more info on the error you're getting? I've done this before. All I did was boot from the XP disc, quick format the partition (containing vista) and install XP.

I had the same problem at first. Make sure you have XP-Ready Drivers. What I did is download a program called System Eraser(NukeandDestroy) and burned it to a cd or dvd. It completely erases everything on your computer to factory defaults, so no more operating system. I then just went to install XP and installed the drivers. Theres other ways to do this, but this is just how I did it.

            It's a Dell Studio 540s.

            …apparently, I'm going to need to hunt down some drivers as well... if anyone here knows the right ones, that would be great. ._.;;

...graah, why must this be so frustratingly hard...

Because someone thought vista was a "good" idea.

I have no own Vista experiance but does changing boot priority to cd at the Bios and then formating the hd on which Vista is installed not work? If the normal format made by Win Xp does not work maybe formating with the Vista cd, skipping the setup then installing Xp works…

Sorry if you tried all this a dozen times already.

So I made a bootdisc for DBAN, and it doesn't seem to want to erase anything. >_<

You guys are crazy, I love Vista. Of course, I have it tweaked to the way I want it, but all the features are easy to use and it's just fine (for me, anyway).

But if you want to use XP, the problem is that because the computer is new, many of the drivers on the computer will not work (particularly, the audio drivers if they're Conexant Audio Drivers. If you have a Sound Card, they should work, but not always).

                        Here's what to do:

                        Restart the Computer

Mash Del until you get to the BIOS screen.

                        Go to Boot priority.

Set CD-Rom to 1st Boot device

                        Put the CD in.

                        F10 to save.

                        Restart.

Hit a key to start XP install.

                        Should format automatically.

                        Go from there.

I called it wrong, so long ago. I guess this needs to be changed.

y dont u just get 2 operating system on 1 comp, if ur comp has 2gb ram +, no problem. Download a program call virtual PC, it allow u to install another operating system and can switch between the 2. vista to xp, when u get bore of xp log out and switch back to vista.

Same here. I wouldn't go back to XP even if somebody would point a gun at my head… okey if that happened I would but you get my point.
