I have two series in mind that I wholeheartedly reccomend:
Gintama - It's an anime that's not in the States, but it is amazingly funny and it parodies a lot of other anime, manga, and others in the form of references. It has its serious moments such as the Yato Arc and the Benizakura arc, but most of the time, it's just random hillarity ensuing. Very nice!
Code Geass - If you haven't watched this series and you are into suspense/action kind of stuff, you have no idea how much I reccomend this to you. The story is very strong, it's full of twists that, unlike Lost, actually all resolve logically, it's a very very emotional series. I do have one word of advice, though. Do not read the manga to this series. The manga was written after the anime finished and the manga does the anime a disservice.
In any case, those are my reccomendations to you.
Also, one more thing. When looking for Gintama subs, always go for 'Rumbel Subs'. Not only do they provide the regular subbing that all other subbers do, they also include reference boxes on the top of the screen that displays whenever a reference is used and what the reference is.
EDIT: For good examples of each series, I'll embed two youtube videos here, one for each series that'll be pretty much spoiler-free:
Gintama: (Note that this is some form of AMV, so there are no subs, but you can get the general idea for the references they tend to make)

Code Geass: (This is from the English Dub, but the English Dub is equal in quality to to the original. Also, this is just Episode 1, so I don't classify it as a spoiler.)
