I recently watched the movie "Untraceable"
(Link here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untraceable
and after seeing that horrendous display of terrorism i felt i had to make this thread. It wasn't the movie itself so much as the comments seen on the site as the kills take place. It bothered me so much because they remind me ALOT of the comments and controversy surrounding the recent live webcam feed of a teeange suicide.

In both these events, though one has the clout of being fiction, internet users themselves helped or were a part of the madness. So i just have to ask, just how messed up IS the internet and your theories on why, what, when, where, why and the like. I just feel like this kind of thing should be discussed amoungst the internet population because in case something like what took place in that movie really did happen it would be US who would be the determining factor in the madness.
How messed up is the internet?

-
The internet is a horrible place people go to lose their innocence/peace of mind/mental stability and etc.
-
Anonimity allows for true human nature to darkle through.
-
Welcome to the internet. It's not going to change for you. Accept it, and learn to love it.
-
The internet is a place to go where people can detach themselves from whatever moral chains they or society has placed upon them. This mentality won't change, it'll only ever get bigger and bigger; and it is.
It's because there's no sense of identity. Everyone believes that no one knows them and never will know them and therefore they won't be condemned. No condemnation = do whatever you want.
Still it's better if it stays on the internet rather than actually moving into real society, 'cause then we're screwed =/. -
The internet is not something you just dump something on, it's not a big truck, it's a series of tubes!
-
The internet isn't messed up. People are messed up.
The human race needs a good kick to the anus.
-
Well..people did create the internet, so techniqually, the internet is alive.
IT'S GODZILLAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

A PERSON MADE THE INTERNET NOT PEOPLE

If you think that is messed up…
The internet can be a glorious place, and can be a horrid place.
It all depends on where you go. -
So Apforums falls under which category?

There are lots of different websites on the net, and it depends on where you go. It also depends on the people there.
-
But I agree that it all depends on where you go and who is there. There are some pretty decent, and sick people on the internet.
-
The Internet is awesome. No exceptions. That is all.
-
I think my post said it best.
-
Pretty much, yes.
I agree with whomever said "how messed up are people?" What did the Internet do to you? It's not the Internet who horribly traumatizes you for life, making you unable to unsee it, it's the sick motherfuckers that do that. The Internet just helps..
-
The internet is extremely messed up and for me to say of the things I have seen on it….well, I would be taken in by the police for questioning so I can't even discuss it online.
-
Internet is just great. I laughed in 8 years so many times over stupid things I found, met the coolest people and my true love, and got information for EVERYTHING.
There are many freaks, mama's boys and assholes out there, and idiots who massacre their whole school and post their warnings on youtube.
It's dangerous and not that easy to prepare your own kids or younger siblings, if they want to surf through the internet.
Oh, and it's full of p*ron.

No shit. Remember kids, RULE 34. (Oh, God, no, the fuckin' memories…... :ninja:)
But yeah, I agree. I found some cool people but I only care bout a few, I prefer hanging and talkin with people not over the Internet, but from my life, friends, from school, my city, the city close to mine, etc.
Oh and btw, one word: 4chan
-
The internet is people, I think the same people that would watch people die on the internet are the types of people who would likely get a kick out of watching people die right in front of them. You can't blame codes and fonts for the actions of people. Well, I guess you could, but then you'd be like one of those "Video games make kids killers" types of people or something. It doesn't make people messed up, just gives them an avenue to reveal their messed up nature.
Yeah, I'll go with that.
-
the internet is like a bad stock exchange, alot of taking and no giving.
-
The Internet is a reflection of the world. Even if the things said/shown on the Internet on not said/shown in the real world, they still exist in the mind of the people.
Does that make the human race evil? No.
1. There are always good people in the world, no matter what.
2. Even the darkest of people on the Internet, could be good people. -
I agree with everyone who states te principle of human nature or the human soul being more responible than the tool being used. The internet isn't evil, it;s just a another way ppl express themselves.
if ppl were given large megaphones to express themselves without being noticed, you get the worst death threats or sex squeaks of BDSM that would combust ur child's head.
People will express themselves with anonymoty or not. It's the way of the world.
-

You're right. However, more people will express themselves when thier anonymous. Only a minority of people will express such outragous views without remaining anonymous, even then they're labled "sick". Make everyone anonymous though and more people will express themselves the difference is HUGE.
So, in retrospective the tool is in fact partially, maybe even fully to blame.
Humanity has always been a sick race. Racism, sexism, hedonism and all other evils have been prevalent throughout the ages, it's just the media that likes to play those "humanity is failing" chords -
the internet really sucks. I love it but some people are messed up. admittedly I am about to brake rules 1 and 2 but my friends personal info address, phone number, car model, photos, pictures of her little sister, name, cellphone number, ect. Were all leaked on /b/ and /cgl/ and she is now being terrorized by ignorant /b/ tards and she very well could be in danger cause of it. I would say yes the internet is a terrible place but god do I love it
-
Yes. The Internet allows people to stay anonymous and say what they feel. However: if the Internet didn't exist, don't you think those ideas will still exist in their head?
I'm a writer. I feel that my story is too flashy to be in a book. Don't get me wrong, books are awesome. But I want my work to be seen by everyone. They only way I've thought of doing that is by having it drawn.
I cannot draw to save my life. It's like wanting to scratch an itch, but you don't have any nails. I've been trying to learn to draw for years, but I've never reached the point I want.
That's what the Internet is great about. I would rather the loonies of the world say whatever the hell they want to say. THAT WAY, they don't carry the thought in their mind until they finally snap and bring an AK-47 to work.
Don't get me wrong, the Internet is bad no matter what. But there is no black and white. It's all grey.

Alright, since people seem to not pick up on this (duh, the internet is a tool. That doesn't matter), the things I was talking about weren't done by "anonymous".
I have, unfortunately, seen things 10x worse than anything you'd ever find on 4chan.

…Is that even possible? What depths of the Internet (hell) did you explore to find something 10x worse than that?

4Chan isn't all that bad. I mean, there are….hang on a second.
cough...cough DESU <3 COUGH
There are worse things on the Internet.

Internet is scary if you're using windows because Bill Gates is watching you. So stop visiting porn/hentai sites Bill Gates might call your mum.

Anybody ever see the 2nd season finale for Hell Girl?
Well if you have, just take the screwed-up aspect of it, picture it being in a series of computers instead of a village, & you have the internet. xD
-
I don't feel the internet is messed up, but much internet culture is. However, any banding together of youth will result in a culture or subculture that someone somewhere will find offensive. That's just how it is.
I remember reading some guy reminiscing about the early days of computer-computer protocol in the 1960's or 70's or somesuch - it was a great experience posting on bulletin boards until high school kids discovered the technology and did nothing more than talk about sex jokes or spam. Immature brats are why we can't have nice things.
Same goes for imageboards, massive forums or certain streaming sites - people will be stupid if they can be because it's more fun. It's hard to get bored pissing people off without repercussions. One simply has to get away from that mob chaos to actually have meaningful discussion, but also have a way of preventing the chaos from spreading to the hidden conclaves.
Technical blocks are probably best…I can't be thankful enough for how many people are too dumb/impatient to learn how to use IRC.
-
The internet isn't messed up, the people are. Sure there are some dark places but yah, so does real life dude. Also, about the suicide thing I think it's pretty stupid to blame other people for a suicide, you know? They made some immature comments maybe but to blame the suicide on them is like blaming GTAIV for Columbine or V-Tech. It's a stupid argument, GTAIV was released after those things, haha, but seriously people who are messed up enough to do messed up things are beyond people's help.
Aaaaaand yah, the lesson is don't hang out in forums or websites where stupid people roam. Since you can pretty much avoid them, why pay attention to them when that's what's feeding their impulse to do stupid things.

Eh, I haven't read the manga yet, so I can't give much of an opinion on it.
But, I do love the first 2 seasons of the anime.

See? That's a big part of the Internet. After all, no failure = no internet.
