Might be a little too provocative/touchy subject. But, what the hell, let's try it anyway! For our own amusement.

Smart can be understood in many different ways but in a broad general sense do you regard yourself as a smart person?

I have noticed quite often people describes them selves as "above avarage". I bet most probably think they are, human ego works that way. And I sure would like to say so too but, in deep down, I know it wouldn't be true. So, honestly & seriously, I think I might be rather dimwitted. Or at least no way above avarage . Little under avarage. That's it.

I get all A's in school, I'm good at speaking in front of people and teachers all of my life have said I'm one of the best writers they've ever had in their class. I'm also in all enriched classes and next year I'm entering IB and AP courses.

So I guess I'm smart. I certainly don't underestimate myself. That's a really really stupid thing to do.

I like to think that I am smart. Well, I like to think I am not stupid. I have always considered myself to be average. School-wise I always got A's and B's while taking Honors and AP classes, and usually took math and science with the grade above me. (Chemistry, Physics, Trigonometry, etc). However, I have always known and had people smarter than me in each and every one of those areas. On the other hand, I also like to think I am very perceptive. Again, nothing really above average, but I can usually piece together what people mean and / or insinuate when they say things. I usually catch jokes and those little things that are subtle (but meant to be noticed) as well, but I doubt I do so more than the average person. My best friend and my brother are the two most intelligent people I know (personally), and for many reasons.

I think the real important part is your ability to critically think. I have a low memory capacity and have difficulty remembering things and memorizing things. I could read a whole paper and remember my thoughts on it and the basis, but rarely can I recall the details until I have read over it a number of times. Despite that, I can critically challenge ideas and thoughts as well as decipher the meanings and purposes behind a given topic – though I miss the obvious sometimes -- and can ultimately hold my own in an intelligent conversation. I am terrible at debating, however. My brother and best friend, on the other hand, are excellent when it comes to piecing things together, researching information, finding the truth, and critically thinking and coming up with their own ideas and thoughts on the matter. Where an average person like me might be influenced by a great deal of what I see and read, they both are extremely capable of making their own ideas and thoughts with extremely well thought out precision and details. Meh, I cannot even find the words to get my point across.

Long story short: I would say, yes, I am smart. Above average? Probably not. Average, more than likely.

People tell me I'm smart. Does that work? From my perspective, I don't know. I was in all the hard classes in school, my vocabulary is pretty extensive, but does that equate to being smart? I have no idea. I do what I like and like what I do and that's good enough for me.

I've been told for most of my life that I'm quite smart (by teachers, parents' friends, psychiatrists… that last one was a joke. sort of).

In 4th grade my teacher said that what made me above average was the fact that I excelled in both in areas that require the right side of the brain, as well as the left (those being, math, science, and music as compared to writing, languages, and visual arts). As a result, while I've certainly encountered peers who could outrank me in one particular field, they are usually lopsided in favor of that field, whereas I'm more of a jack of all trades.
Academically I never got less than a A in grade school, and I was valedictorian of my middle school and high school graduating classes.

However, my entire perspective on my own "intelligence," as well as my self-esteem, were shot as of last year, when I started college at Dartmouth (an Ivy League school that nobody seems to have heard of). In grade school I was the top dog, the big fish in the little pond, unmatched, but now I'm surrounded by classmates who've effectively turned my little pond into an ocean (30% of them were valedictorians themselves). I've received Bs and I've developed an inferiority complex (academically).

That said, I'm still confident in my own "natural" intelligence, and still periodically have disdain for kids who spend hours studying in order to outrank me, but haven't an ounce of common sense or natural talent. So yeah, I don't consider being in AP classes or having a large vocabulary evidence of being smart. Intelligence is far more about cognitive thinking and the like.

Lesson here: if you're still in grade school and are apparently hot shit, get ready for a let down. The world is far bigger than the tiny one you've lived in so far, and there will always be people "smarter" than you.

I've been in gifted/honors classes since third grade, I can take AP courses that aren't math-related without much trouble at all, and I do really well on standardized tests

Book smarts mean nothing without common sense though. I find a lot of people don't have that.

I think I have a very high emotional intelegents. Not just in how I act and react to things, but also for understanding how others are feeling. I'm also very good with computers. ^^

I don't really know if I'm smart. I'd rather let other people tell me that, because I certainly don't feel smart. When I was younger smart was accompanied by a sense of pride, but I guess getting the snot knocked out of me in college really showed me how ill-prepared and over-pampered I was in high school.

I went back to tutor at my old high school and was able to ace almost all of the problems I proctored to my students. Stuff I may have struggled with not 4 years ago.

I don't really define intelligence by grades anymore…it's more a function of standards, individual perseverance, luck, and lifestyle. There's a negative correlation between # of classes taken and mean grades in those classes: someone who takes 6 classes would have a lower grade than someone with 4, the obvious reason being more time to devote to each class. A smart person in the 6 class situation should be able to overcome this problem and have grades equal or greater than the 4 class person, so in that sense I'm dumb (or normal), because my grades are lower than the 4 class person (assume 3.0, mine would be 2.7).

It really takes another perspective change to understand how intelligent one really is - a social science major, for example, might feel that there's "no way to compare" between grades in the hard sciences versus social sciences, because "everyone's different" and some people might be better at other things than one another.

True, the material might be different, but I don't believe for one second that people who could call themselves scientists could preclude the social sciences from being weighted against hard science.

The level of vigor and discipline is simply greater in the hard sciences than social, and both demand more than humanities. I know, I've been in all three. I'm taking a history class this quarter I only attend 60% of the lectures to and I've got a B, if I ace the final it'll go to an A. The 40% of the lectures I don't attend are devoted to study for another (science) class which I would be lucky to get a C+ in.

When I was younger I was smart, but then I had an accident where I cracked my head open while swinging on a pole at the local soccerfield. Since then I've been having problems.
I also have ADHD which makes it hard to pay attention… so yeah.

I think knowledge is garbage if you can't do anything. I think ppl have skills in everything. The people who can solve and resolve things using basic resolutions that others tried so hard to figure out..or mathematically pinpointing a problem and using some advanced way of scince or persuasion to get what they want or fix a problem can be called smart.

With that said, I can pretty much do anything if I actually bother to put forth the effort to try. But since I'm lazy as hell and lack anything that could be considered ambition, so I tend to mess up a lot.

In short, I overcome that and I'm fucking golden.

I'm only good at regurgitating information and not so much analyzing it. Which is why I find subjects like history and literature to be a lot more difficult than math and science.

I'm terrible at speaking and debating. Like, ridiculously bad. I'm also bad at being coherent when I write but at least I can look over what I wrote and change stuff so I can be clearer. But speaking? Once it's outta my mouth, there's no backspace button.

I've done well in school and I've had teachers say I'm smart but that's going downhill fast. I don't want to do homework and study anymore (which is minus more smart points because I'm a dumbass for not just sucking it up and doing the damn work) unless it's something I have a personal interest in (art history? TOTALLY THERE but of course that's the one class on my schedule I had to drop this year goddammit but I digress). I don't have an aversion to learning, just...school.

Not really. Like others who have posted, I'm often told I'm smart by other people yet don't really see how they come to that conclusion. If anything, the only corroborating evidence to support my being of above average intelligence was an IQ test that I took when I was in elementary school, in which I scored above 130. However since IQ tests aren't always a good indicator of true intelligence I tend to discount this, especially given how long ago the test was taken.
Academically, the only areas I truly feel like I can succeed in are History and English. As I have an easier time memorizing facts than actually applying them to my own life. Math, Foreign Language, and Science however are my biggest enemies. Used to have an easier time with the first and last, but a nasty spell of brain inflammation has rendered my ability to process them next to useless. Second languages on the other hand, have always been something I've struggled with.. About the only language I can honestly learn, aside from English, without struggling is American Sign Language. Though that has more to do with my having a better physical memory than anything else. (I have an easier time remembering movements, comes in handy when riding horses, than I do anything else.) As a result ASL tends to come easier to me than, say, Spanish, though I still have issues putting words onto the actual movements.
As for social intelligence.. Yeah, I'm a dunce in those regards. It's almost painful to watch me struggle through social interractions with other people.

In short, if intelligence is measured by how many answers you can get right when watching Jeopardy, I'm probably pretty well off. However, if you look at the whole package of social and book intelligence, I'm tremendously average.

I dont know. Im that type of person who doodles constantly and does other shit while the teacher is talking, but still hears everything there saying. Math and Science like Chemistry are harder for me. While History and English type classes are easier. I make Bs and Cs and probably one A per report card. So school wise/ booksmart wise i say im average.

I think where i excel is at computers. Something happens, ill research and everything and eventually fix it. Same with drawing, except my laziness usually gets the better of me. Im good with girls and with my friends. Im better when i work alone or in small groups (like 1 or 2 other people).

So am i smart? I dont know, depends on how you define it. Everyone is in some capacity

It depends on what you mean by smart. Am I very knowledgeable about a lot of things? Not really. Did I finish High School? Not really.

However, I seem to have Common Sense bursting out of my ears. I can resolve almost any argument merely by speaking to both sides. I can judge how a person is bound to act by spending less than five minutes talking to them. I know right from wrong much better than most people believe they do. I know that violence only leads to more violence. I know that if you try something not-so-legal, there is a 99% probability of getting caught for it. I know that if you do get caught, you will get screwed over. I know that if you spend all of the cash you make on something trivial, you may not have enough to pay for more important things like food, rent, bills, etc. and you may find yourself on the street without a home, with a MUCH lower credit rating, and the only thing you get out of it is that/those trivial thing/s that you paid for. I know that if you try to kill yourself, unless you're a ruthless tyrant who only harasses his people and spits on the rest of the world, people will not be happy.

So yeah. knowledgeable: Not really. Wise: Oh hells yes.

I'm smart at good things and not at others. But my GPA is only like 3.8 or something. Not so great, hehehe. I could have a 4.5 because of my AP and Honors classes, but I'm too damn lazy so I've got B's in H. Chem and Religion (that class is crap anyways; I don't need to spend 45 minutes a day learning why Jesus is better than me). So I guess I'm not very intelligent. I never thought I was, really. The only place my ego gets ahead of me is in literature. My teacher says I read and write years ahead of my level. I'm a sophomore in high school and he's talking about me taking college classes, which sounds awsome.

And even in my good subjects I've just never been able to really mesh with the standard learning styles and environment, so my grades have always been in the B/C range.

Until this year when I decided to research history, politics, geography, all on my own time. And I've learned more and better than any History/Social Studies class ever got through to me.

Also I finally found the major of my dreams and for the first time was actually depressed to get an 87 average in a class since I'm so on fire with it.

Let's put it this way: I can write a very good essay and, when I'm interested, I can absorb facts like a sponge (I think that's just part of being a geek though), but I BOMBED Logic when I took it in college. I thought Logic would be the math I wouldn't hate, but I was so wrong.

Got a 1295 on my SAT though, with balanced verbal and math. Now I just have to see if I can do it again for GREs.

No, but seriously, I'm in all AP classes, and I also teach a class late Saturday's. It's an advanced Chemistry course. It's only for those with phenomenal skills in chemistry. Well I'm pretty good in the areas of History and English and Human Geography and that kind of crap. I can do sciences pretty well if I try, but since I have almost no interest in them it's pretty hard to try.

Unfortunately I'm very untalented in the arts - I've got like no rhythm or musical skills, and I used to be decent at drawing but I hit a wall and never recovered from that. I can write really nice prose but unfortunately don't have the creativity to put anything good out - it's always style over substance with me.

But I think I have pretty good common sense anyway. Then again probably most people think they have good common sense.

I honestly don't have a clue why logic is considered a math.
I know it can be shown through algebra-style formula, and it uses very concrete thinking, but it really seems ridiculous to have it be in the same field as every other math.

It should be classified with whatever they class Public Speaking type classes in.
