talk about how you think they fit in the crew. how you felt when they first joined
What were your impresions when someone joined the crew

I didn't get into one piece until… I da know right after Robin Joined and everyone was in Skypea. So from all the artwork I had seen I knew all the way up to Chopper who was going to join. So seeing them join the crew was just fine for me.
Though it didn't click because at the time I was only watching the anime, so I really didn't think Robin would be apart of the crew. So when she joined, I was like "woah no! send her back to the royal tomb!" But after her dealings with CP9 I absolutely love her!
I love Franky's design and personality, so I could not wait for him to join and was over joyed when he did.
There was absolutely no doubt in my mind Brook would join. Because he was a skeleton with an Afro and I knew Oda loved Jack Skelington. I was happy that he joined but I was bummed that it was another swordsman. Soon I got happy again knowing he could pull off music based attacks. Most of witch we can't see now that he has been gone since the SH's seperation.
Not looking forward to any super powered Warlords joining by the way.

Brook hasn't joined in the anime yet, so becareful, better edit it. ;-) Although it is indeed very probable from where the anime now is.
Everytime a character joins it's an epic moment. It only happens once in a while. The feeling depends on the episode and character, but I think it's always a cool and happy feeling. The episode Robin joined was hilarious, and the episode Franky joined was funny too but different. I think the least impact was from when Nami joined: she just said, okay, but I will only partner up or something like that. Sanji joining was something I looked forward to but which I already knew from the opening song. Chopper joining was one of the coolest. :) (Also the part telling dokterine.) Zoro joining was short but powerful.
-
Of all the joinings, I really only had strong feelings towards Sanji and Franky.
Sanji, primarily because it's when I first got into OP. So dramatic and graceful, especially considering the galoofish others.
Franky: Die. Die. Die. Die. Die. Die! Die! Die! Die! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE!
I don't like him much.
-
Well I started watching One Piece when it was already most of the way through CP-9 arc, so I'd seen most of the crew members as I researched it abit before commiting myself to watching it.
Never really minded Robin and loved the way she joined, just being so casual about it.
When Franky was first introduced I disliked him as he told them to beat up Usopp, but was curious as to how they were going to make him likeable enough to be a Straw Hat, but after Robin, I had every faith that it could be done. Needless to say, it was done well and Franky is now one of my favourite characters -
Well, when I first saw Franky, I thought he was SUPER gay -_- But now, he's my favourite Straw Hat  and when I first saw Brook, I thought he was really annoying and stupid…. I still think he's a lil' annoying, but I'm more tolerable of him now
-
Like many I was spoiled up through Robin so the big ones are Franky and Brooke. To me getting in on the whole Paulie vs. Franky vs. Kaku debate was fun because all three had Strawhat potential. Until Oda did that famous colorspread Mugiwara vs. CP9 I was kinda iffy on Franky. To be honest I KNOW this is the anime topic but all my first impressions come from the manga and the anime just supports that.
The thing about Brook joining is that there was no Luffy stalking involved, no convoluted process to convince the crew mate to join (Nami, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky) it was pretty much straightforward yes or no (kinda like Zoro and Ussopp although the latter had his issues).

Having only read the manga up to Skypiea before deciding to start watching the anime, I was mostly surprised at Robin's joining. Did not see her joining from a mile away to be honest. She sort of just sneaked onto the ship. I didn't think she'd mesh well at all.
Then I finished reading Skypiea and saw that she could mesh well. Also saw the anime up to the end of Alabasta. Loved her voice actress.

I sort of go back myself: I remember when it was just "the five" where all of the originals felt so natural when they joined. But then, when I started seeing Chopper everywhere in Japanese sites and merchandise and such, I'm like "meh, so the series has fallen for the mascot phase too"…until I found out he was their doctor! And don't get me started on the shock of Miss All Sunday joining them when I found that on a website...

I have huge issues with Brooke joining - I dislike his character and design and I feel that he didn't really JOIN join the crew the way most of the others did. I mean if you adhere to the number chapter theory the initially less epically joined character (Nami, Usopp and Robin also franky) officially joined after going through something with the help of the rest of the crew, However Brooke's already gotten his number chapter and in my opinion his reasons for joining were a bit blase.
Also it feels odd to me to have him joining so soon after franky, I mean the first five joined pretty quick, but that was kinda necessary, then chopper and robin joined with decent gaps between them (if only because alabasta is such a long arc) then we had jaya/skypia/daveyback fight/water 7 plus fillers in between robin and franky, and then brooke joins after what seemed to be such a short arc. it just feels off to me
-
the first 4 nakamas were clear that they would join(cause arc was mainly build around them…and yeah they fit...without a doubt)
than i remember how chopper joined...dont know he is my least favorite SH till today but iam still liking him in a way, especially when i saw the first time Monster-chopper...just awesome and his mascot style vanished(even i never have seen him as just a mascot...crew member is crew member) next robin.. wasn
t rly shocked at that time..just...uhh nicce interesting chara now...and the cp9-arc for her...who couldnt now like her joining.. franky i liked from the start...was a MUST-join brook...first i didn
t want him on the crew and he still feels "rly new" but i support humour-charasand his jokes are just a too good reason to like him -

What logic are you using?
A long wait has only happened ONCE which was with Robin to Franky. -
I was spoiled up to Robin, so for me it was Franky and Brook. All in all, both times I said the same things "I don't think they're gonna join", tho I actually really liked them. They both did join tho, so I guess I was happy.
-
When I first got REALLY into OP, I knew that Robin was gonna join, but I didn't like that she did. I was wishing that the original five (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, I didn't really care for Chopper or Vivi) could have stayed the way it is. I hated her for some reason, and then when I saw the pic of them plus Franky vs. CP9, and I hated him too. But when I started to watch the show more up until the end of Enies Lobby I started to wonder why the hell I hated them so much. xD I swear I cried during both their pasts. And Franky's interaction with Usopp made me love him even more.
So, really, I've only actually witnessed one SH enter the SH Pirates when it actually happened (meaning, that I've seen the SHs join years after it already happened), and that was Brook. Truthfully, I wanted him to join, so I was happy when he did. C: But I wasn't too used to him being there so I had to read a few chapters afterwards (which just happened to be his past) and then I grew to love him more. C:

I was already spoiled on everything, but when the manga first introduced Franky, I thought. How did such an asshole end up on Luffy's crew. Sooner, he became more likable. When Ussop joined, I thought he was a dummy. What was until the Little Garden arc. He was pretty damned smart.
-
@Tokoro:
But then, when I started seeing Chopper everywhere in Japanese sites and merchandise and such, I'm like "meh, so the series has fallen for the mascot phase too"…until I found out he was their doctor!
Haha, same for me. I remember thinking "shit, this series was looking so original and all, and then comes a cute mascot…even worse, i bet he'll sound awfully annoying in the anime"...thankfully i was completely wrong in every way.
Maybe it's just me, but i really think that the last 3 crewmembers still doesn't fit into the group interaction as well as the original six. Especially Franky, he works A LOT better when he's alone, like in the last manga chapter. -
Yeah, I was spoiled as well. Since I started reading the manga, while the chase on the Seatrain was going on, and I didn't caught up until they got to Robin's flashback in the manga. I didn't started watching the anime until like they begin Nami and Chopper rescue Luffy and Zoro from being stuck in their areas in Water 7.
When I first saw Franky, I knew we was going to join the crew, once the scene between him and Usopp were talking at Tom's Workshop before the CP9 came in and stuff.
For Brooke, I was iffy, since I was on the Perona to join the crew bandwagon. But at the end I didn't mind Brooke joining since he important plot line with a character from the past with Laboon.
-
Zoro - Luffy found the right first crewmate
Nami - Seeing her hit the captain was a turn off, and that bitch needs to get hit herself every once in a while
Usopp - He can be a good source of lulz
Sanji - Cool
Chopper - Every anime needs a kawaii little shit in the group
Robin - Get the hell out
Franky - Whatever
Brook - Well…shit
-
I agree with what someone said about Franky. Just dont like him much.
I reeeally hated Robin joining for a long time. Especially considering that she was aligned with the villains and seemed sorta heartless. Then after joining she never showed much personality at all besides explaining things so there was rly no reason to like her. In Water 7 she finally became tolerable. -
I already knew of the crew up to Robin, so nothing was a surprise. Though while watching the anime, it was interesting to see how the new recruits would interact with others. Seeing Sanji and Zoro start their rivalry in the Arlong arc, or seeing Chopper enjoy adventure in the Alabasta arc, or just the sheer awkwardness of having Robin on the ship.
I was a big fan of Franky ever since I joined the forum and found out about him. I wanted him to join the crew so bad, and I'm happy he's on board. He's my third favorite character behind Sanji and Luffy.
Brook, I knew right away this character was going to be something in the story. I thought his character design was great, and it reminded me of characters from the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. Sure the reason he joined the crew was to reunite with Laboon, but I know he still respected the Strawhats and wanted to join them in their adventure. I approve of Brook.

well I started watching one piece when it was around episode 300 or so. It was somewhere around when Zoro beat Kaku.
But lets see, I didn't really know much about One Piece. Saw like 5 minutes on tv once and thought holy crap has cartoons gone downhill since when i was younger. (4kids version, fighting alvida. So cheesy one liners and a kid stretching) yea pretty gay.
I later after hearing so many awesome things decided to check it out. The first 5 were obvious, cause in opening song. I hate Usopp, otherwise Zoro was awesome. Nami was just the girl in the crew, and was anxious for Sanji for a long time, cause he doesn't join for quite a bit of episodes and you see him since opening on ep 1.
Chopper I didn't really know what to expect, after seeing his flashback he was keeps for me. I loved him as soon as his arc was over. I was hoping he wasnt' gonna be a stupid mascot like the bears in Bleach or Oolong, and puar in Dragonball. But Chopper has always been a great asset in fights and he likable.
Robin not sure if i was spoiled online first or not. But either way she is shown on the crew in one of the openings or closings anyway. so no surprise for me there. I didn't mind her cause thought she was hot.
Franky, thought he was gonna be the main villian in water 7 until he kidnapped usopp. then their interaction was obvious he was gonna join. And then of course soon saw a spread of the strawhats cp9 and that sealed it. Brook was convinced day one, when he said yes to luffy askig to join. and sealed deal when learn of laboon.
And as of right now I believe "if manga readers" that the person luffy is with right now is gonna join.
People thought was gonna join that did not
1. Pauli (his rope fighting seemed like, ooh new fighting style + shipwright)hmmm that might actually be the only person that i thought was gonna join that didn't. cause Ace left too damn early or denied it right away to even have me guess there. I would think smoker would join if tashigi wasn't with him.
-
Brook - Well…shit
Haha, same for me.
Not that i hate Brook or something but well, i was a bit disappointed for being honest.
-
Thought Sanji was a bit rude to start off with.
And did not expect robin to join the crew just like that, but i suppose when luffy asks somebody to join, he's serious.
The way Franky puts his arms together and poses is awesome… -
I always found Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper really likable from the start, and didn't mind their joining at all. Robin joined, and I felt a little meh at first about that, but after the Skypiea arc, and definitely after the CP9 arc, I found her to be just as great as the others.
Then Franky joined, and it REALLY disappointed me. At the very beginning of the CP9 arc, I wanted Kaku to join. He was a really likable character and I thought he'd go perfectly with them. Then I found out he was bad. Later, about half-way through the CP9 arc, I was hoping that Paulie would join instead. He was just awesome. I kept this hope up until it was decided that Franky would join. I don't have much of a problem with Franky, he just never really appealed to me.
And now Brook's going to join. Although I don't read the manga, I knew this almost immediately after he was introduced. It was pretty obvious, if you ask me. I don't have anything against this, since I like Brook.
