It seems like, whenever politics come up, it turns into a horrible flamewar that no one ever wins. Even the people we put all of our faith in to run the government have been lowering themselves to this behavior, as seen in the last presidential debate. Regardless of the facts, do you guys think, as I do, that this fighting is ruining our country? I can't go for more than a day without hearing something about Sarah Palin, and whenever I visit my relatives down south, someone tries to convince my dad that FOX news is better than CNN, and I hate how more and more people seem to be turning into obnoxious political fanboys.

It's just another thing that causes division amongst people just like Religion & Video games so I'd say yes.

          Sort of….yes.

I'm personally not really much of a fan of either of the two main parties anymore.

this is one of the big reasons I don't vote. All they do is flamewar. How about tell us about some of your issues, or what you stand for, instead of telling me how much the other guy sucks.

It's certainly better than a totalitarian dictatorship or a theocracy, so I have no real problems with a government driven by politics.

But in your specific example, it's not a problem with the government itself, just the people running to take office in it.

And Sandai, religion's faced plenty of dire straights before video games. There's not some deep set hatred between the two.

I don't think politics are ruining the country, our country already lives a contradiction of being founded on the principles of no taxation when taxation is needed to ensure government can pay for all the services people demand of it.

The real causes of problems are:

                1. Mobilized interest/lobby groups taking the place of political machines.
                2. Legislation to immunize bureaucrats from leadership changes.
                3. The strengthening of government unions and weakening of commercial unions.
                4. Cable news.
                5. Baby Boomers.

I stress #5, Baby Boomers are the cancer that is killing America, while Generation Y is the Chemo that may - and may not - save it from death.

                  @Malintex_Terek:

founded on the principles of no taxation

It was taxation without representation, and that wasn't the main block it was founded on. The revolution was in part started because of taxation without representation.

The real irony with that is that D.C. has no real representation, but is still taxed. And it's the fucking capital.

It was never an issue about representation, that was argument to justify the grievances to the British crown. Common folk in the Americas hated taxes in general and definitely didn't like paying it to George III who was so far away and didn't directly impact their lives. Never mind that colonists payed less in taxes than subjects in England, in their view they shouldn't have had to pay taxes at all since they were taking risks living in an untamed and dangerous country.

This sentiment has bled through the generations, and still rages strong - people want services, but don't want to pay for them.

Personally, I'd love to have a nuclear power plant near my town, but most wouldn't agree with me.

I don't think politics ALONE ruin our country. It just feeds the flame that IS destroying our country.

                        Ignorance.
