Ah I thought that was the case the moment you confirmed his identity. Either way, congratulations, I hope fans will purchase any many copies as possible so that, not only can you continue to translate them but so that more will actually be released.

How did this AK guy make NAruto and Bleach popular and One Piece not?
-
I think because AK was the man behind Toriyama's World, the number one source for good scanlations back in 2001 or something. Some people say that he's the reason why people started getting into Naruto, Bleach and FMA because Toriyama's World made HQ scanlations for these manga from chapter 1 and on. He hated One Piece and refused scanlating it, so some people apparently think that this is the reason many people didn't get into One Piece. Because there were no high quality scanlations for it back in 2001. Even today, we still don't have any good scanlations for hundreds of One Piece chapters.
But I think that's a not the reason why some people dislike One Piece. Naruto and Bleach do have strong starts, unlike One Piece. Don't get me wrong, I love the first couple of chapters of One Piece, but some people just don't like the very cartoony style of the first chapters.
-
One Piece was already being scanlated at the time. Also (and this is the really important thing) the Naruto anime started right when Bittorrent was released and it was the first major success of anime distribution under BT. Of course, by that point One Piece was already 100+ episodes and the only way to get them was HK bootlegs.
-
While I do enjoy the FUNimation dub a lot, I can see why others would dislike it so I won't argue with your opinion there.
Oh, not the dub. It's fine. FUNimation's politics really piss me off right now

There really isn't any solid reason to hate OP unless something about it just doesn't meld, like the cartoon art or the wacky 'implausible' physics. At worst, most reasonable people will merely respect it and understand why it's popular, even if they don't like it.
But the fan wankery for N+B and condescension toward OP is more akin to gangs hating each other, for no other reason than they're dealing with rival gangs. I can't really understate the importance of a first title in setting a standard for one's expectations from an anime/manga. Many anime newbies who became Naruto fans are/were trained to be attack dogs toward OP through the culture of mind back in the day, which was really tiresome and annoying. People might have wised up by now, but the influence of der Narutard still runs pretty deeply. I mean, I still see people bash the 4Kids dub. As in post 4Kids bankruptcy 2011. And not in a satirical sort of way, it's pharmaceutical-grade fan rage. There's no way the same people could hold grudges for 7 years, there must be baton passing.
-
the fan wankery for N[aruto]+B[leach] and condescension toward OP is more akin to gangs hating each other
What.
Also, I didn't like One Piece when it first came to America (when I first heard of it). When it was on "The FoxBox", I hated it. A lot. I don't think I even gave it much of a chance. I don't really know what turned me off on it so badly. That was when I was about 9 years old, though. Obviously, my opinion has changed and I love One Piece now.
So, people's opinions can change.
-
I mean like the console wars, not mob violence or anything like that. I think of people settling in different camps and viciously parrying criticism of their favourte/first series while offering bland, lack-luster criticism to something they percieve as threatening and encroaching, whether they've read it or not.
-
I'm not sure about the controversy behind AK since I never used message boards as a kid, but I soley believe an early presentation has alot to do with gathering up a fanbase. When I first saw OP on Foxbox, I thought it was a mess since the characters were saying alot of stupid things(and were obnoxiously loud for no reason too). For that, I missed a ton of episodes. Even behind all this, I felt like there was something there. When Luffy punched Don Krieg's spiked cloak and proceeded to knock the crap out of him, it felt good. When Luffy defeated Arlong, it felt good. When Luffy climbed Drum Peak holding 2 of his incapacitated friends, I thought that was probably the most emotional thing I seen in a cartoon. From there, I kinda questioned why everything else but these key moments felt so wrong.
Maybe if 4-Kids kept the script clean, the series could have done better. That said, I don't really agree with K's comment in that interview. He probably has no idea how bad it actually was.
-
Oh, not the dub. It's fine. FUNimation's politics really piss me off right now
I'm assuming it's either something to do with the lawyer they've hired or their policy of always having to include English credits, even if that involves shrinking the Japanese ones when they don't have access to cleaner materials?
Speaking of arguments such as the console wars, I hate to say this but… individuals are going to set up camps in a community, it's the kind of place that allows for such things to grow. When someone is surrounded by people who all have a love for one product, they'll believe in it and question why others wouldn't consider liking it, let alone hating it. I don't want to be blunt but One Piece fans engage in the exact same behavior towards Naruto fans, it's just the justifications are different. Teenagers and fanboys especially will defend what they love with a burning passion and, whether anybody actually wants that to exist, it has, will and continue to happen. I mean, look at how passionately TGWTG fanboys defend the reviewers from criticism. They defend a site which about people criticizing movies from being criticized. That's all kinds of hypocritical.
Although I disagree with his comment somewhat myself, I think the show would have had problems anyway, just like Case Closed did on AS. Due to the associations of art in America, a lot of people would find it hard to take One Piece seriously and well, the first 20 or so episodes aren't all that nerve-biting, especially when compared to Naruto and Bleach. I hate to keep making that comparison but I honestly feel that the first season of One Piece is one of its weakest.
-
Most were like you Hiroy, myself included. But the people I'm complaining about are those who bash the 4Kids dub but never even saw it on TV. It's clearly a case of inherited anger.

This is the major reason I don't post in Manga much anymore, but it wasn't like this 6 years ago when OP was more exclusive. It's not a matter of the posters being "young" either, I was 17 when I first signed up on AP. Freaking warp was 12 but had the maturity of a 20 year old. Naruto fans at the time were at equivalent ages but acted like irredeemable idiots, and when they got banned or bored of their antics they simply dropped out of the community.
Such pandemonium is memetic/infectious in large crowds, but hypothetically, if the crowd has good moderation the mass stupidity won't spread. Mods can expand Dunbar's Number. The kind of behaviour where people post on emotional impulse rather than critical thought is more natural for humans even if it's anathema to community cohesion, but in 2005 there wasn't really anywhere the pariah could go. They either went to AP or KF forums or IRC and behaved themselves, or were out in the dust. Now, with sub-communities in places like NarutoFan, YouTube, the OP Wikia and other hives of scum and villainy, it's much easier for massive numbers of noobs scaling up massive amounts of noob stupidity. I blame this on Naruto and Bleach getting so large and retarded first, then hijacking OP. I like to believe if OP had become a large fanbase first, the quality posters of the early days might have taught good behaviour to the younger crowd before they grew up as rambunctious as they are.
What if's, what if's. I've complained a lot, sorry. I must sound like an onery old man. :P

Hmmm…
I remember went to a forum in 2004 and 2005 and even though Naruto and Bleach were popular there, One Piece was popular too (if not more). It seemed like a lot of the cool people liked One Piece (and this was a Sonic the Hedgehog forum!). That's when I first started to get into it and I always had the impression that its fanbase was pretty intelligent. A little after that, Naruto and Bleach started airing in English then I started to notice things get stupid. But then again, I probably didn't really know any better since I was 13-14 years old... Oh well, I don't know. I always thought One Piece had a large, intelligent fanbase to begin with that degraded over time.
By the way, if you're going to italicize titles, shouldn't acronyms of titles be italicized too?
-
I was introduced to both series in SJ back in 2003 and while I enjoyed them both but I just liked One Piece more. I lost complete interest in Naruto by the time they were fighting those Sound Ninjas in that forest with the giant Snake.
-
PirateBeck, are you still interviewing Alexis Kirsch? If so, could you ask him if he knows anything about the time skip?
-
I like both One Piece and Naruto. One Piece is by far my favorite manga though.
For me my top 10 is probably something like
1. One Piece
2. 20th Century Boys
3. Fullmetal Alchemist
4. Rurouni Kenshin
5. Dragon Ball
6. Bakuman
7. Naruto
8. Monster
9. Hunter x Hunter
10. Vagabondalso like YuYu Hakusho, Gintama, Fairy Tail, Slam Dunk, and Toriko

Trust me, he does.
-
What I wouldn't give for his old posts on TW arguing passionately that Alabasta was a typical arc that showed no growth followed by the 'useless' Skypiea arc all the while contrasting it with Naruto.
AK is to OP as Bill Donohue is to every movie ever made.
Better late than never on his CW2 choice though.
-
I have nothing to add to this conversation. I just have to say hi to Greg.

Wow, what a small world I live in.

The Funimation dub from what I saw of it was much better than the 4kids version. It was hugely annoying to listen to. And the main reason I just passed One Piece off as some stupid kid's show. Also at the time I really couldn't get past the art style. And when it first aired on Fox I was only just becoming aware of what the company would do to other shows. I had to look around for the uncut stuff because after a while stuff just doesn't make sense.
You know. I never really thought of that before. Since at my age I did see the butchering of One Piece through 4kids (Sanji's Lolipop, terrible puns they added in, Smokers cigars, guns being recolored), I had assumed the people also posting their hate for 4kids were my age, not a generation that never saw these things first hand.
Although I've never quite understood what the Naruto and Bleach fans were gripping over One Piece for since I've never really read any forums dealing with those two. I myself gripe over Naruto and Bleach, but I still read it… and occassionally I try to watch it when there's not a filler arc.
-
Rofl, Greg, you're the main reason I post on these forums, you're too funny xD
I honestly like what Funimation is doing with the english version of OP, I mean, I have my quips about what ViZ did to a lot of the translations in the manga, but Funimation is pretty okay as far as their edits and dubs.
It's funny though, I kinda ran into the same problem a lot of others did with OP; thankfully I got over it quickly. I first saw it in the American Shonen Jump back when it was featuring the Kuro arc and passed it up because
It looked too cartoony for my taste. I didn't even bother reading it, just skipped to Naruto… Foolish me >.> I didn't start reading it until the series got to RougeTown. I do have to agree though with what was said with
the BT downloads, that really did kick things off as far as getting the episodes over to the states. Thinking about it, I don't think I started watching the anime until they were around the Jaya Arc O_o -
I almost have all of the volumes now, only three are missing. Incredible how many volumes the series already has… and to think there are more than 60 volumes ahead... I wonder if the people who will be introduced to OP at the end of the series 10 years from now will bother to buy more than 150 volumes from scratch.
-
Hey guys, since I haven't seen anybody or Beck post this I thought I fill you guys in on the final part of the interview with Alex from Viz.
Some of the things that were talked about included how to get more One Piece in the US, Colorwalk 2, the Kami thing, Gintama and Volume 61. You can read the full thing here. Enjoy.
-
Nice read, thanks! I would so rebuy every volume 10 years from now with Zoro printed. It will be like what $1500? I'm good with that.
-
New World? … That's an odd, maybe interesting, choice.
-
So they will eventually reprint the volumes with Zoro. Excellent starts waiting.

you will be waiting a long time buddy lol
-
New World? … That's an odd, maybe interesting, choice.
Well it seems like it was a decision from the Japanese side. I do admit that maybe a better choice would be "Mermaid Island" or something like that. I figure (based on what Alexis said) that Shueisha is wanting the first few arcs to be branded 'New World' similar to how the first few arcs were branded as 'East Blue'.
So they will eventually reprint the volumes with Zoro. Excellent starts waiting.
Or you can buy the volumes now and then maybe resale them or we may never see reprints of volumes with 'Zoro' happen. Just saying if you look at what happen to Gintama.
Glad to hear that you guys are enjoying the interview.

Hmmm, fine. Where do I go to make sure my money goes right to Viz?

Hmmm, fine. Where do I go to make sure my money goes right to Viz?
Why not buy the volumes from 54 onwards? Not like Zoro appears in any of those or at least in a way that would affect the story content itself. You may want to stop at volume 60 but even so, that's still a good 7 or so volumes. Just please stop creating such a fuss over it, as I said before, it could be far worse and Zolo is not the worst term we could have received.
Also, I do plan to make a Facebook group tonight as I suggested in the interview, been busy with exam revision and parties before the supposed end of the world (why I didn't post beforehand).
-
Hmmm, fine. Where do I go to make sure my money goes right to Viz?
I would suggest Right Stuf since most of the older volumes you can get for about $6 bucks while you can buy the newer ones for around $8 bucks. That is cheaper compare to going to the actual bookstore.
Or if you want there is always the local bookstores where it would have been full price (about $10/11 bucks). Book a Million and Barnes and Nobel have it where you can become a member from $25 and get about a buck off each purchase. It would have really paid off in the long run considering that I was buying the volumes as they came out during the Speed Up

What caught my attention is Marineford was originally going to be called the Summit Battle.
Hopefully you get where I'm going with this. -

Yes, but find it odd, because they aren't in the New World yet. I think "Fishman Island" would better, but who knows how this arc will go on? Maybe they'll be in the New World before it ends. I just think next arc should've been called New World.

Well you still have time. CW2 doesn't count out till November so there is always time. I am planning to do the same too if I order it online.

If anything. Maybe it is a sign that this currently arc isn't going to last as long as we think it is going to last. Without going into too much detail about current events. Oda seems to currently like making things similar to how it was at the start of the series so I would guess smaller arcs could be expected for a while. Purely speculation though.
Still I completely agree with you about the titling but it seems like nothing Viz can do about it unless Shueisha changes their mind.

The Pirate Summit? The thing that Ace said at Alabasta?
"Let's meet at the Pirate Summit"? Which can mean "Let's meet at the top" as in a figure of speech, not a place? That Pirate Summit?

Yeah.
I should be clearer in what I meant. I didn't want it to be labeled that because people would be making that reference as "the pirate summit" (hopefully everybody is mentioning there will be a future pirate summit ironically), but it could also be interpreted such that Luffy met Ace in the place where a lot of the major players of the world gathered, the "top" so to speak.

aaaanime.com lists the next Shonen Jump double issue as being the October / November issue

Just a quick note for anyone looking to pre-order Color Walk 2, it's now available for pre-order at therightstuf.com, and today they've started their 33% off sale on Viz products, 40% off with a "gotanime" membership. As was mentioned in the interview with Alexis, the best way for us to get more Color Walks and/or Data Books is to have strong sales for Color Walk 2, so the more pre-orders of it the better!

For the record. The website is "Rightstuf.com".
No "the" and only one "f". (So as to not confuse people who'd like to order from there)
And he's suggesting Rightstuf, ARC, because there's a sale on Viz products on Rightstuf currently.

wow, not really digging that placement
Again, only one One Piece volume came out in Q1 2011, and those rankings are for Q1 2011. Around this time last year, there had been sixteen One Piece Volumes that came out in Q1.
