So, apparently you guys don't have to worry about the "Impel Down" On volume 57. It's going to be titled "Paramount War".

Yeah, but "Big Mom" was databook-only, and it's not Oda himself who writes the databooks. I think Dorry and Brogy were written "Dorey and Burogi" or something in some databook, but it was "Dorry and Brogy" in the actual manga, so we go with that. So I think "Big Mam" is the correct spelling.

But you're right, even Oda does romanization mistakes (he spelled Iceburg "Icebarg" once)

Yeah I looked up Aohige's posts in that thread and he was corrected, as it was romanized as Hoe, but apparently the name comes from the Japanese spelling of the english word "Whale".

How is Viz's release of Slam Dunk? Aside from the fact that they're only halfway done with releasing the series when there's no need to release it so slowly.

The Whale's name is Hoe, pronouced Ho-eh, because in Japanese "Whale" is pronounced "Ho-eh-ru." In a similar manner, "white" is pronounced "ho-wai-to." It's basically just over-emphasizing the "wh" sound. Like the caterpillar in alice and wonderland.

(of course the japanese have their own japanese words for whale and white, this is just how they pronounce the english words.)

Slam Dunk isn't coming out slowly. I haven't been buying the volumes (I have a few early ones), but it's coming out every other month. That's the fastest Viz releases series. Only series that came out faster than that was Rurouni Kenshin. They also did YGO! monthly for one year. Naruto and OP are the only series that got major speed ups. Only other series I could see a speed up as remotely possible with is Bleach…but I don't know if Bleach is holding it's popularity even in the US. It'd be kind of dumb to do a speed up now anyway when the series is loosing so much steam even in Japan.

Whitebeard's War is called the War at the Summit in the manga. A Summit is the highest point of a mountain. "Paramount" is the highest point of a mountain. Therefore, War at the Summit=Paramount War.

Frankly, I think "Paramount War" sounds more prestigious.

Some are saying it's because Shueisha copyrighted the name "Roronoa Zolo" and they're forcing Viz to use it. I have seen zero proof of this.

My guess is Viz thinks its readers are morons that will go into seizures if they suddenly change a characters name back to normal.

1-God Censorship in Skypiea
2-Lying about Bon Clay's jacket and censorship of him in Alabasta.
3-Zoro/Zolo and Tweet-Tweet (both 4kids terms)
4-Impel Down Prisoners and their clean clothes
5-"The real Kuma"

The difference in these situations is that One Piece is:
1. Good
2. Getting better, or at least staying consistent
3. Gaining fans.

On the other hand, Bleach is:
1. Terrible
2. Getting worse
3. Rapidly losing fans

I don't pay attention to manga sales unless a new One Piece volume is released but I doubt Bleach is doing horrible here in the US. It's still on TV and and I'm sure that attracts new fans.

Looking up the latest rankings the latest volume of Bleach has been on the list for 6 weeks. One Piece has yet to stay for even 3 if I'm remembering correctly

The Shiryu / Shiliew thing doesn't bug me, but isn't Shiliew the official romanization? That's the only reason I'd want it changed as Shiliew reads awkwardly. Jimbe(i) and Moria(h) is fine where it's at. Teach / Teech isn't a big deal, but I wonder why change it in the first place.

My guess is that it's because Teech could be trademarked for marketing purposes while Teach could not. Of course, they could have used Marshall D. Teach instead, but who knows what goes through the minds of corporate lawyers?

Zolo I can understand since Shuiesha trademarked that after 4Kids failed to do so despite using it, but deciding to follow the names used in a video games by a different company is just odd.

To my it's more important they sound and look nice. That's why I'd rather have Shiryuu, Jimbei and Moria. Jinbe and Moriah just look odd to me. Shilliew isn't very bad, but I like Shiryuu more.

For the record, you guys, all those names would be pronounced the exact same way by a Japanese speaking person.

Shiliew would be pronounced exactly like Shiryuu.

Moriah=Moria

and Jinbe=Jimbei

They'd all be pronounced the same by a Japanese speaking person.

Not that it means much, as we wouldn't pronounce Luffy as "Rduffy", but I'm just saying.

These differences intrigue me. Why does it say East Blue on one volume, and simply One-Piece above the actual logo on the other? I also would like to know why my volume 4 is shiny, while 1 and 2 are not.

Note that I only own vol 1, 2, and 4 as of today.

Your volume 2 is a newer printing run and the style has been updated to fit in with how viz currently do things, whereas your volume 4 is from an older printing run.

About a year ago viz discarded the gold leafing effect and started putting arc names on the front.
