What did they do with the SBS' and all the extras in the volumes? Did they change things or just translate them as they are?
New official Viz media topic V2.
-
-
Okay, Oda drew the SBS headers himself until around around Vol. 50, where fan designed ones are used instead. Go look at the raws, and you'll see that they're clearly fan art.
What did they do with the SBS' and all the extras in the volumes? Did they change things or just translate them as they are?
Viz keeps most of them. The only stuff they cut out are the word puzzles and stuff that are impossible without knowledge of Japanese. They used to have the Usopp Pirates' fan art gallery too, but that's gone as well since they didn't have enough entries or something. If you see a blank page in between chapters with a little square panel from the manga that doesn't show Pandaman, it means that fan art or something used to be there.
-
Why not use the original art that was there?
And one more thing, what's a dust jacket? ^^" I saw a picture of Pandaman, Pandawoman, Tomato Gang etc. and it said that was under the dust jacket, but what is it? And is it in Viz's volumes too?
-
A dust jacket is like a book cover. I doubt other countries too that,
-
Oh, I get it. Thanks.
So it's only in the japanese volumes? -
All 5 volumes are on my shelf~
Dammit I need a new shelf o.o
-
@Kairouseki:
About DOOM, I'm not exactly sure how you're supposed to pronounce it. The katakana is ドーン so I'm thinking that Viz's effect isn't supposed to be pronounced like it has a u in it but rather with a long o sound which would fit perfectly with the original.
I hope they don't go and use "With a DOOM!" but the sound effect works still. "With a BOOM!" doesn't really sound right. They shouldn't try a direct translation for that I think.
How bout…. "Do it with a bang"? At least I've seen that used in everyday speech, like "Go out with a bang." Sounds more natural than "with a boom" or "doom" anyway.

hahaha i had that problem too…so i switched to a shelf thats on the desk above my computer. gotta say, they look terrific up there. i still need to get 34-38. so little money, and so little time...dadgum
-
Oh yeah, I'm going to be running into the problem of shelf space too. It's no problem while I'm at college, as I keep 'em in stacks inside an empty dresser drawer I have, but once I get home… Guess I'll go through the shelves and remove what I don't read anymore. Most of it's picture books from when I was little anyway.
-
So with these new volumes, Franky will finally make his U.S. debut appearance. SUPAAAAA!

I'll be picking up my copies next week hopefully. I'm so excited! All you guys that have the volumes already are lucky. I'm still waiting for rightstuf to ship mine.
-
@Badass:
Are the SBS headers online somewhere so we can see these changes?
It's in Low Quality because I just took this picture by webcam but here's some from Vol 51, 53 and 54.
[hide][/hide]I think this dude here actually had an SBS overall in one of the volumes.
His SBS header are in the volume but as I said, the fanmade headers are varies for each SBS pages. There are several other headers on Volume 52 that was made by fans.
[hide][/hide]
And one more thing, what's a dust jacket? ^^" I saw a picture of Pandaman, Pandawoman, Tomato Gang etc. and it said that was under the dust jacket, but what is it? And is it in Viz's volumes too?
If you take off the dust jacket of One Piece volume, it has another cover that tells the journey/adventure of Pandaman. Here's one from Vol 52.
[hide][/hide]
Viz doesn't have it or more specifically, they never have the dust jacket for any of the manga they licensed. -
That's a shame. It looks really cool, someone knows of a place I can see the pictures under the dust jackets?
-
This may be a little off topic, but I was just checking that review site that gave OP some bad reviews to see if they reviewed volume 35, when I decided to do a little investigating. Apparently, the same lady that said OP " had little purpose or direction to it" and gave Vol. 34 a 6/10 is the same lady that gave Naruto a raving review and an 8/10 for its 46th volume. :getlost: Figures. I guess OP isn't emo enough for her.
-
She's probably actually reading Naruto.
Though for most people that should guarantee a low score.
-
On kind of the same topic as the SBS, does VIZ keep the same character polls or do they get their own?

Unless it's changed recently, they just use the original Japanese results and note them as such. I don't know if they've ever gotten around to doing an American poll or not.
-
Naruto actually is a pretty good manga…I don't see why we have to bash Naruto to puff up One Piece. It had a boring stretch from the end of Grass Country to the end of Sasuke vs. Itachi...but it's gotten better again. Also, Part I was great, particularly the Chunin Exam and Sasuke Retrieval arcs. Volume 46 is the middle of Pain's Invasion and Naruto vs. Pain....no wonder it got a high score.
That lady's just not reading OP. No reason to compare it to her review of Naruto.

I couldn't get past the second chapter.

Idk, For me, it started to suck right after the Chunin exams. When it started to focus on Sasuke, I started hating it.

I think in volume 7 or 24 there's an address for Americans to send popularity poll selections, but I'm not sure…but hey...I'm cool with them puttin up japanese popularity polls. Americans would only do popularity polls for Naruto or Bleach!

Hyperventilating Naruto is awesome!
-
I wasn't aware Naruto was even in his own series any more.

I have the new volumes; I must say I'm quite happy to see my favorite character finally in america. Now maybe when I cosplay Franky, more people will know who he is, lol

I have Franky's legs.
I so need to cosplay him.

December: Naruto
January: Luffy
February: Ultimo
March: Ichigo
April: NarutoMy bet is they'll continue this pattern the rest of the year.
Also, I don't mean to be rude with this. Thank you for typing up the list, but it was posted about a week ago.

I have Franky's legs.
This. The only reason why I'd ever consider cosplaying Franky is because I have his buff legs. (And I'd like an excuse to wear a speedo :ninja:)

2. Yes! Me too. -
A couple of pages of one of the volumes I bought today were cut-off. Even worse, the pages were actually falling out of the book.
Get to return that volume tomorrow.
-
One of the pages in my copy of Volume 34 has a big inksplot right next to Iceberg's right eye.
I was like WOW.
-
I got my 23, 25 ,32 and 33.
I just finished reading 23, it's really good. The only thing that bothered me was that they said Bon Clay's robe(?) says "Oh Come My Way", and that he said "Oh Come My Way" at the end of his speech when facing Hina. -

God dammit Viz.

Yeah, that really annoys me. But at least it's the only thing that annoys me thus far, I'll read the other volumes tommorow I think and see if there are any major changes, and I'm looking forward to the April volumes to see what they've done with them. (Franky using his Centaur transformation)

will i get the May or June issue in the mail?To answer your second question, yes, that's in my magazine too.
And I'm guessing you'll be getting one of the summer issues, like June, or July.
-
did everyone already get their april issue of shonen jump? because mine hasn't come yet and i'm starting to worry it got lost in the mail or something. They usually come on the 25th of two months before right? So i'm thinking i should have gotten it by now
-
Has anyone who ordered the March volumes from Rightstuf gotten theirs yet? Because mine haven't even shipped.
-
Can't believe Viz has blocked the UK from the wanted poster section on the One Piece site, why would they even do that?
Can someone re-host them?
-
It's just lazy coding.

Its also strange since the Luffy & ZoLo wallpapers worked for us before. :wassat:
-
Oh, don't worry, it's not blocked from the U.K., it's blocked for me too. It says it's not available in my region. It's funny 'cause I live in America. :getlost:

Ah, I guess Viz messed something up. I assumed the UK got screwed over again.
-
I finished reading volume 25 and noticed something, in the end of the chapter, when Blackbeard is holding Luffy's and Zoro's wanted posters, Zoro's poster still says 'Zoro', while it said 'Zolo' when that drunk guy watched it. lol.
-
Today I went and bought my volumes, except for Vol. 34, which I wasn't pleased with. Apparently it's incredibly unimaginative cover scared off both Barnes & Noble and Borders from ordering it or something. I'll have to make a return trip when I'm home for vacation next week.
Anyway, the only change that I've noticed is the spelling of Corgy, and that Chopper's back to using Boost.
Anyway, rereading Water 7 reminds me how muchI love this arc, and the nice character interaction in it. And is it just me, or does Luffy actually seem smarter than normal in this arc. He's making big decisions left and right, and even reading the newspaper! I guess it fits, since he looks more mature in this arc than he does in the others.
Oh yeah, I checked out the new Shonen Jump too, and one of Hiroy's pieces (the one with Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji in the barrel diving suits) made it in to the fan art page. Congrats.
