@-wahn-:
Just in case people still thought Haki wasn't mention on that chapter/page. Here's Stephen translation for that particular dialogue.
Note: The "Large Man" was used to refer to Blackbeard because his name hasn't been revealed yet on that particular page.
It doesn't really bother me that much because I don't collect Viz version since I already up to date with the Japanese tankobon and one volume behind on my country's version. Just a bit surprised and disappointed to know Viz completely avoid and skip the mention of Haki on that scene. I guess it shows to you that One Piece really is one of those manga that really hard to translate because you will never know what Oda might foreshadow on the characters interaction and dialogue.
Edit: Let's just wait for Demon Rin say about this because I remember she's having a debate with Brennen about Haki back then and she brought some point about Haki being specifically used on that scene.
The word 覇気(haki/ambition) is used in chapter 234 page 163, but it doesn't have any special meaning. It isn't connected to the mysterious technique of "覇気"("haki"/"ambition") from later on. When Rayleigh first uses "ambition" in chapter 500, the big guy that's in the cage with him says: "あんただろ! いまの”覇気” 。。。いったい何者だ!?” That was you right! That "ambition" just now …Who the hell are you!?
The word "覇気"("haki"/"ambition") appears with quotes around it making it stick out, and every time after that point when Oda is referring the technique of "ambition" it appears with quotes. In the case of chapter 234 覇気(haki/ambition) appears as just another word. Hopefully that clears things up for you guys.
The word 覇気(haki/ambition) existed before it became a technique in One Piece. Much like the word 仲間(nakama/friend/comrade)...
