The thread is not to just praise Viz, but to criticize them and discuss it.
Try reading the posts in this thread. 90% of them 'criticize' (in other words, whine about) Viz's translation and mayb 2% actually praise it. Then there's a mere 8% which come from people like me who are okay with it. Doesn't seem like much praise is goin' on at all, dude.
Kami can be translated as spirit:

However it can also be translated as "god2.
In the context of One Piece and Eneru, the best translation of kami would be god.

read some stuff on Shinto religion and you will find that Kami does not translate into God!
It is not like you can see capital letters in a manga, so what does it matter God or god.
You are no doubt wrong either way because kami can translate into God just fine. Google translate confirms this, and a quick google search gave me this page.

Ok, just because someone writes "God" with a capital like that, doesn't mean it's the Judeo-Christian God. The word "God" just means there's a deity of some kind, one thing most people don't realize is that, "Allah" in Arab isn't god's name. It's just The Arabic word for god. Christian Arabs also use the word Allah because it just means "god".
Kami means god. It means god. I repeat to you Verilance, it means "god". The way the Shinto priests in their own religion see it has nothing to do with what the word means when it's used by the general population.
If you ask a Japanese Christian who they pray to, they'll tell you "Kami". It's their word for god.
Now, In One Piece, Enel does NOT just call himself "Kami", He also calls himself "God". Not another Japanese word that means god, he says "Goddo Eneru". That's God, in English, with a Japanese accent. I just turned to Enel's Entry in Yellow (the Databook), and next to the priests it lists the Kanji for Kami, and just on top of it in furigana is written "Goddo", as "Goddo Eneru" again. Meaning Oda associates the word "God" with "Kami".
Try to explain how Kami is right now. I'd love to read this, I need a good laugh.

My only problem is that using "Kami" in that context seems awkward. Enel's major line of the arc (the one posted earlier) doesn't seem nearly as menacing without the more-familiar (to me, anyways) religious references. (I realize Kami and God mean the same thing, but imagine hearing Enel say that in the anime; it just sounds clunkier to me) I'm okay with Vassals, as that does not come up much, but Eneru's megalomania and belief that he is a literal god when, in actuality, "God" is just the title that the Skypieans use for their ruler, is a fairly important part of his character, as it makes him seem even more deluded. Kami does not carry the same connotations to the English-speaking audience, which is who they are translating this series for.

You know what this is? It's weeaboo speak. It's how people that think they're Japanese talk, by randomly inserting Japanese words into English sentences.
"Oh, Kami is a title who cares?" Okay, how would you like it if Viz didn't translate Nakama? Sure the hardcore would know what that means but an average reader?
And before anyone calls me "Funi-biased" I have issues with their translations as well. Not as many as Viz but they do exist.

Those lines from Volume 30 were awful, there is no real justification to this, but the "Fear the Kami" line was sort of cool just because of the "the".

Kami only stinks for me because I also hate Nakama and Shichibukai all over the place as well. But just like when I read the scanlations, I just read it how I like it. I don't see why others can't do the same.

VIZ never stated, it's really just educated guessing on the part of fans that explains why they made the decision with the word they did.

Yeah, exactly. While I'd love for it to be "God," it's not going to happen so it's no use getting angry about it. It's close enough anyway. I'm just happy we have the manga being released in English.
Now, I'd get angry about it if it were on-par with 4Kids, but it's not. It's far from it. The changes are pretty minor and it doesn't change the story at all, like how 4Kids' changes did.

She's not neccesarily Karifa considering the same issue also calls her Kalifa. It could go either way.
Apparently the new issue says Kalifa. I'd go with the one that's been used more than once, 'specially since the original CP9 article also used both Jyabura and Jabra.

so has anyone else experienced a problem with not being able to get volume 32 (wether it be going to an actual book store to buy the volumes or ordering / preordering online) cuz that was the only volume i wasn't able to get the other day. they told me that not only did they not get it in but that it wasn't in they're system to be able to order it. also i've heard a few different people saying that they preordered online & they've gotten confirmation that they're order is shipping with the exception of 32 ! so i wanna know what the hell is going on & what the fuckin deal is ! i'm already irritated by this & am growing more & more irritated & pissed by the second ! so whatever the fuckin screw up is here, VIZ (or who ever the goddamn screw up is with) had better get this fuckin shit of a problem fixed & they better get it it done damn soon cuz i want my volume 32 !!
Had Oda meant for Eneru's title to be a special title (like how the German ruler's title of 'kaiser' is brought into the English language) he'd have had used the English 'God'. Because he's using 'kami' he's implying it is not a special title, therefore in an English translation the character should be God.
There's no excuse for using 'Kami', it's a blantant attempt at covering their asses.

Yes, "God" (Goddo in Katakana) is attached to the Kanji "Kami" in the Furigana. Not always, but it is.
Kanji line: Watashi wa Kami Eneru
Furigana line: Watashi wa Goddo Eneru

Ok guys, we all know that Kami means God, so why get mad over it? Casual readers will pick it up too, since "god" is used throughout the manga as well. As for whether you think it sounds "awkward" or not, that's something I can't judge for you. Personally, I think it sounds fine, but if it sounds awkward to you and you can't look past it, calm down, switch whatever words you need to in your head, and read on. It's a couple of "bad" lines over a span of never-ending epicness…you can live. Don't get disgruntled and shun the whole acceleration because you don't like the way Viz handled a few lines and terms.
From the latest US Shonen Jump issue, I scanned up the Brain Benders page which includes a list of names. I'm fairly sure these are the ones we'll be seeing in the volumes.
