@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Um, I just want to go back to the awkwardness thing…the Viz translation isn't awkward unless you consider psuedo-curses in place of curses awkward.
When 95 - 98% of the dialogue is exactly the same as the fan translations online, and the artwork is the same, I don't really think you can say they're much more awkward....maybe if you're extremely nitpicky and want to whine about the 3 - 5% change from the original.....but that's your problem.
So, the thing I've noticed on this thread is that people like excuses. No one is willing to treat the Viz releases as something that can stand on its own. People are supporting Viz basically on principal, when Viz is making translation decisions that many people here have a damned good right to be upset about on principal. It's hypocritical and stupid.
The Viz translation being awkward or not is completely subjective, so don't just say "it's not". Compared to Stephen's translations I've never been as fond as Viz's, and I never even had to pay for the former. This wasn't really a problem until Skypeia, where I found myself getting caught up on lines that just…felt wrong. This may just be me, but apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so. I guarantee you've never seen a line-by-line comparison or you wouldn't be spouting such bullshit. It says the same thing, basically, sure. It's the wording that counts. It's how the lines are delivered. The pseudo-swearing is fucking annoying. Please, tell me someone can at least relate to this. This is a petty complaint until it distracts from the reading. I can argue that the Skypeia volumes do.
On principal, I don't like how they've changed the names of characters based on real life pirates. Zoro to Zolo is one thing, but this has absolutely no excuse. It's not enough to really distract me much while reading, as they don't come up often, but on principal, it's disheartening, just as most of you will buy shit merchandise just because it's One Piece related (not going to lie, I do the same thing).
I don't CARE that Viz had nothing to do with Zoro vs Zolo, by the way. I don't care WHY. I just care that it sucks. I've gotten over it a long time ago, but honestly, I am so sick of excuses like "it's better than 4kids" because that's all it really is: an excuse. I read Viz for Viz. I don't care what's been done in the past, I'm reading this like it's standing on its own two legs. There are a lot of things that someone who had never read One Piece wouldn't get, and though that's not the case with me, it does make these releases of worse quality. I don't see how anyone can say differently. I don't give a damn what it used to be, the English releases are not perfect. When I sit down to read them, the only thing that manages to actually bother me every time while reading is the kami thing. They're great fun and I'm glad I bought them, because I love One Piece. But why should I care WHY things are the way they are? That doesn't make them any better.
But so many of you people are just defending Viz day in and out...and why? Because you're appreciative of the new release schedule? I know I am. I'm very happy about it. But that doesn't make these volumes any better on their own. The Kami thing really does distract me in my reading. As a single entity, without knowing the backstory, I would be confused as hell, and so many lines sound absolutely terrible. I don't like art edits of any kind even though Viz readers technically voted for the SFX to be in English and the signs aren't that obscene. I've been told by diehard Viz supporters that we'll "agree to disagree" and then my opinions have been ridiculed. I deserve to be, but only for my comment about 4kids' edits at least having comedic value. I still stand by that. They're so bad they're good in some cases. Yeah, a lot makes me cringe, but now that we have Funimation, we've got an alternative. I don't like being bitter towards the past, and I certainly don't hold grudges.
Also, ten bucks a pop. I don't like paying eight dollars for a book of any kind; I'm the sort who frequents library book sales for 25 cent novels and 50 cent hardcovers. The price jump killed me. So basically, I'm paying $10 for about 200 pages of One Piece of slightly worse quality than I could get online and I'm paying it merely because I want to support the series and I want to be able to read it on my hammock. I enjoy what I have and I couldn't really complain before Skypeia all too much, but tell me, am I really so wrong in not humping Viz's legs now?
