Oh, so it doesn't specify what exactly we will be seeing?
New official Viz media topic V2.

!!!!! Do you guys know which bookstores carry Jump? I'm not suscribed to it, but I wanna buy that issue with the side story in case the Wanted! book never gets brought over here. I wanna own at least one.
I don't know if it's true everywhere, but Wal-Mart and most large grocery stores around here have it on their magazine racks.
A special alternate story does suggest one of the unpublished Romance Dawn stories; if it is, it's probably the one with Garp in it seeing as how they're skipping over his actual introduction.
-
By December issue they do mean it will be on shelves in December right?
Because I always get confused about which magazines are released months ahead of whatever month they're called.
-
That'll be the one that arrives in November, I think. That's how it usually is, though my local Barnes & Noble seems to be behind, since the only issue they had when I went there yesterday was the one where Luffy beats Crocodile.
I noticed that Desert La Spada was reduced to simply Desert Spada. Weird, since there was plenty of room in the speech bubble for the ''La''. Maybe it was poor or inaccurate Spanish so one of the editors who knew the language axed it or something.

Yeah, that's what I'm betting on, either that or one of the omake …
-
The December issue comes out at the end of October (at least for subscribers). Some people get it around the 20th every month - I get it around the 24th - 27th…I guess it's different for everyone.

Considering espada should be written with an e, it's probably not that.

Well, then I give up trying to justify that one. At least he doesn't call the attack name when he uses it at the end of Impel Down.
-
im buying this issue .
so the crossover comic is going to be translated?
this news cheeres me up :)
-
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Hopefully we'll see "Wanted", "Color Walk 2", "Color Walk 3", and the three data books released here as well =D. Also what book were all those 10th anniversary of OP pictures released in?
I'd love to see the other Color Walks. The data books would be nice too. ^_^
But man, I'm going to have to check that December issue out. Maybe there will be posters…

Actually, the proper spanish for this would be La Espada, not "La Spada". I think this is a weird hybridization of Spade and Espada. The full spanish translation of this power would be La Espada del Desierto, for which the more accurate English translation would be The Desert's Sword. If instead you'd rather think about it as Desert's Spade, then the correct translation would be Desert La Pica, so obviously Oda meant to write it as Desert Sword not Spade.
Either way, the more proper translation is with the La and not without, so it most certainly isn't an informed spanish translator's decision to axe it. A proper translator would have named it - Desert La Espada -. This would be the most correct translation. But since Oda named it Spada, the translators probably went with whatever they thought sounded better, which in this case I agree is Desert Spada. It is the cooler sounding attack name for English, IMO.
-
I thought Sir Crocodile's attacks were in Italian rather than Spanish.
-
^ I was under that impression as well. Does anyone know Italian?
-
^ I was under that impression as well. Does anyone know Italian?
Well, if it is Italian then I can't give an informed opinion. But a google search for "sword italian translation" will yield a number of dictionaries that say that it is in fact Spada. So it appears to be italian.
-
Crocodile's attack names are multilingual, if I remember correctly. I always figured it was a kinda tiny nod at his and Robin's ranks (Robin's attacks has two languages: French and Spanish. Crocodile had three: French, Spanish and Italian. The rest of Baroque Works only had one language for their attacks).
I really wanna add to this conversation, but all I can think to say is "fuck Viz, they ain't gettin' my money". God dammit, can't this series get any breaks?! We got FUNimation's dub, and that's it. Everything else is horsepiss… Is this the tradeoff Oda had to have for all his friggin' talent and success? Hey, Oda, you're gonna get to be an amazing storyteller, with a unique art style who will produce a manga that breaks records, gains millions of fans, and makes you so rich you'll eat yen just because you can! Downside is your work's gonna get turned to shit overseas... Sorry about that...

Unfortunately, in my side of the overseas we only just got Vol1 Romance Dawn. I don't know if I'd rather get shit over here than get nothing though. I've been asking around manga stores but apparently the english translations don't get down here to Argentina, so I can't really appreciate the quality of the work, be it shit or not. What's the big problem with Viz… do they fuck up the translations, change shit, censor things, what?
Also, that Emo Samuel pic is priceless.
-
Despite what people may say, they don't hack the translations to pieces. In the beginning they do come off as kind of corny, but once the crew enters the Grand Line they get much better, and now you can compare them to Stephen's (the undisputed top fan translator), and they'll be pretty close.
There's less swearing, other than a few arbitrary ''craps'' thrown around, but the dialogue follows much more naturally than any scanlation I've read. A few terms and attacks are altered slightly, like Clima Tact to Climate Baton and the aforementioned drop of the ''La'' in Desert La Spada, but most of them are for minor things that don't come up much.
I find the Viz manga to be perfectly serviceable, and nowhere near as awful as people in this thread would have you believe.
-
I find it ironic that I'm complaining about how crappy Viz's translations are, yet i just blew $30 on One Piece volumes just so i can have them all Now i feel stupid
but seriously i hope they at least fix somethings in later volumes. What's done is done though, unless they release like a "Master's Version" or crap. OR maybe VizBig…(wishful thinking)
-
Viz doesn't improve, they either stay the same or go downhill. Reprints usually have more things censored than originally. The translation is fine other than being corny every once in a while. The thing is they change many names and with Kami have started leaving things untranslated. Hopefully that's a one time thing but if it's not it wouldn't surprise me.
-
I'm not trying to be mean, but you yourself have said that you don't buy the English volumes. That kind of undermines your authority on the topic and gives you no right to complain.
-
I had up to around voulume 10 or 11 a little bit ago. I might still have them laying around but I think I got rid of them.
Edit: Up to volume 15 actually.
-
Well, there you go.
Again, I'm not trying to be a bully, but I've noticed that a number of the people in this thread who are complaining about the English translation are the people who said that they haven't bought any of Viz's stuff, and don't plan to. What's the point then?
-
Well it seems to me that all the praising is coming from the people who buy the volumes. If someone has a problem with the Viz volumes like me and Schmeckie wouldn't you think they wouldn't buy them? As you can see there's really no end to this argument .

Gee, I wonder why they haven't and aren't, hmmmmm.
The world's ultimate puzzle. Fitting for a man named "Crossword".

People…....who...don't....like the job....viz is doing.....not buying...or have stopped buying.....the volumes....?
The pieces....they almost fit! -
Yes, people complaining bitterly about products that they have already cut themselves off from and have no intention of purchasing. Makes perfect sense.

Good show sir. Good show.

I should note that I have all 21 books, as well as Colour walk, and I'm not too happy. And from Jump & the volume previews, I'm not too thrilled for the future either.
-
Hey, if you're spending your hard-earned money on these things, you have a license to voice your gripes. I just find it silly that some of the ones who aren't buying them and pledge to continue not doing so are the ones who seem to care the most about what goes down in the volumes.

As much as people buying them with no intention of stopping defending them from having their reputation besmirched by internet rascals.
-
My Useless Pointless Internet Blather Is Different Because
-
I own all the current english volumes, and I can say that the main problem with the translation are just their naming and sometimes kid friendly aspect.
Other than that the wording and syntax is decent enough, sometimes akward, but it's no different from fan translations which could be prone to mistakes sometimes too. The jokes and story are still pretty much all intact, even the SBS is comepletely somewhat pure as Viz will actually just take the time to explain the Japanese phrasing or terms instead of changing it.
I can accept that "shit", "fuck" and even "damn" isn't going to be in the trans, and as long as they stop taking the 4kids route of arbitrarily renaming stuff, than I'm a happy camper.

This is the internet. Everybody can complain about everything.

I was going to go into a small blurb about kid friendliness in VIZ's version of OP and rating systems for Japan and America and how it makes Japanese children seem more "mature" than American children, but that's another topic entirely and it would've been of considerable length.
I appreciate VIZ doing that, though, instead of localization; instead of relating to something you already know, it teaches you something new, unless you knew about it in the first place, that is.
I understand the first two will probably NEVER make it in (and I myself am happy about that, since like someone else stated I think FUNi's taking their ability to swear a little too seriously; I think moderate language is enough, in terms of quality AND quantity), but I have actually seen the third word you mentioned. It was in the first book, during Zoro's flashback after Kuina beats him for the last time. I also think there was one other use of it, but I can't remember where exactly; I just know it was early on, perhaps even in the first book as well.
I agree that they don't have to use language so long as the names stay intact. My only gripe at this point is that they were adding cheesy alliterative words to Sanji's attack names in book 21; yes, the French was there, but with an added English word… it started sounding a little like 4Kids again. >_>

Oh, just thought of something! You know how there are versions of Volume 1 with the Viz logo with the cat. And how in those versions there are like no edits (my one piece vol 1 has zoro written in it and my naruto 1 has the fingers still intact). Anyway, did they ever release any of the other volumes like that?
-

A cat? Was that the first printing? I don't remember seeing a cat on the logo of my brother's copy, but then again, I don't think it's a first edition.
That reminds me; I noticed something interesting about the VIZ OP manga covers. Up until a certain volume (I think it's like 13 or something close to that) they stopped saying "Shonen Jump Graphic Novel" and started saying "Shonen Jump Manga". It's a minute change, easy to miss, but interesting.
-
Viz started using the new logo with Volume 8. I have volumes 1 - 7 with the original viz logo.
Zoro was called Zoro for volumes 1 - 3. Starting with Volume 4 it switched over to Zolo.
-
This post is deleted!
-
Damn, and the printings of volumes 1-3 with "zoro" are probably al gone by now too. I just bought volumes 2-6 two weeks ago and they are all like 7th or 9th printings with all edits and whatnot.
-
Yeah and unfortunately the covers for mine are a little bent in the corners - but I don't want to buy the new ones that have Zolo and don't want to spend money for replacements - I've considered storing those 3 so they're not damaged and putting 3 new Viz ones on the shelf if I ever had the money to waste on something so frivolous.
-
I still own Volume 2 with the misprint, never bothered getting the replacement.

Volume 4 had Zoro as well, at least mine does. Zolo started with volume 5 along with it being the last English volume I purchased.
-
I have the misprint Volume 2 as well.
One thing I noticed when comparing my first five Viz volumes with the corresponding tankobans is how badly Viz did some of the SFX. Maybe they're better now, but they mangled many a panel in those first ones with ridiculous size sound effects.

Gahhh…... Everybody here just needs to stop and just import the japanese volumes. Trust me I used to have vol. 1-6 of the english volumes and i couldnt take it. So now after 3 years saving and collecting, i have all the japanese vols. and i can tell you right now that, even if you cant understand these volumes, youll definitely like them and think it is much more worth importing these than buying shitty, cropped, not properly translated english vols.
EDIT: But then again, since this is the VIZ discussion, I dont want to be bulshitting about the english vols.
-
I have every U.S. Shoenen Jump through the ending of the Zoro Vs. Mr. 1 fight.. In the U.S. Magazine use Zoro name until like the Mihawk Vs. Zoro chapters during the Don Kreig arc. I'll probably will get the rest of the Alabasta books later like I'm planning to do with Skypiea and Water 7. Since all I really want to get at the moment really Thriller Bark and Shabody in the novel release.
-
@Gia:

Yeah i know what you mean, but i started reading one piece with the Viz edition, so it kinda feel good to be supporting them and have a good translation of the early volumes.
Im planning to own the viz edition of the tankos and later when i get more into japanese get the Logs. -

Yeah, well, I just don't care that much you see so… The Viz volumes are fine for me.

Cause we all know it's better to have books in a language you can't even read than ones with iffy wording.
-
So, the volumes are still gonna be edited?
Welp, that's it then. I'm not buying. Maybe I should stop buying jump aswell.
