Yeah, just now got it. Might upload a few scans of the One Piece: Full Speed Ahead article.
EDIT: Naruto chapters 438-441. One Piece chapters…just one.

Oh dear. .
Oh wow, "Shove off" how severe! rolls eyes
Hey, I wonder if we e-mail we can get it changed back for the volume release or have they already printed volume 23?
Hey guys that motion arc is way to awesome even if the 1 part they show is small it is still awesome
Why didn't they say eat crap! Sanji says crap all the time…. :/
Why didn't they say eat crap! Sanji says crap all the time…. :/
But he never tells anybody to eat it. That's what his cooking is for.

I'm excited about it too, but you might want to start another thread for that in the Other Anime/Manga section since that's off-topic (but boy I'm really excited about the stuff VIZ is doing lately).
Anyway I'm happy to see the motion manga is an English version of what they have on the Japanese site, I really liked it the first time I saw it and the music was great. Definitely a good way to get new people into the series.
Shove it is fine. Seriously, the swearing isn't that important.
Actually, Sanji doesn't say ''crap-whatever'' much anymore either. The last time I remember him saying that was when Dr. Kureha stomped on his back to stop him from fighting.
Smoker's line is fine. Still gets the point across without being too sanitized.
Shove it is fine. Seriously, the swearing isn't that important.
Stephen has "tell them to eat shit".
"tell them to eat crap" would be acceptable.
"tell them to go shove it" wouldn't be great, but would at least convey some disrespect.
"tell them to shove off", which is what has apparently been used, sounds like it has come from the mouth of one mildly annoyed, and it certainly doesn't mesh with how worried Hina looks.
Hina: "Smoker! don't…"
Smoker "TELL THEM TO SHOVE OFF!"
Hina "Oh....is that it? Well....never mind..."
I hate random swearing in manga, but here I feel something a bit stronger is called for.
I didn't except them to keep shit but Shove Off sounds like he's impolitely shooing them away or something.
Oh wow… That makes me even less tempted to buy the future volumes. And before any of your tear me a new one again, it's not simply for ONE LINE.
It's their logic period. This is just one more on the plate. If they had to go with "shove" it should have been "shove it"... not... off... Shove Off? Who talks like that?

But it is simply over one line. Every time they tone down an expletive it's just one line out of many, many other lines that are completely fine.
What Smoker says is "クソ食らえってな". The literal meaning of this is "Eat Shit" (クソ=Shit or Crap, 食らえ=Eat! like a command, the rest is probably just to strengthen it but I'm not positive). I wasn't expecting them to use shit but crap would've sufficed. Hell, even shove it would've been acceptable. Not only is Shove Off incorrect, it sounds stupid.
Again, Viz should TRANSLATE, not change it to their liking.
But it is simply over one line. Every time they tone down an expletive it's just one line out of many, many other lines that are completely fine.
It's simply one very important line where smoker totally disrespects his superiors.
Viz's version does not do that. It is neither translated accurately nor is the intent conveyed accurately.
Shove Off is fine. Sure, "Eat Shit" would'a been cooler… But this conveys it just fine. Anyone who says it does not is just thinking and bitching too much. 'Cause no matter what, it's just one fucking line from a manga.
Stop being difficult.
Then again, we are dealing with anime/manga fans. >_>

It's an important line.
There are words they could have used that would have had the proper impact and not have been explicit at all.
They didn't use them.
It's not the end of the world, but it's not great either.
Stop being difficult.
No one's being "difficult". Unless pointing out mistakes Viz made and wishing they had not done so is now considered unacceptable.
Then again, we are dealing with anime/manga fans. >_>
What does watching cartoons or reading comics have to do with hoping that viz would retain some semblance of the original meaning?
It amuses me how an error has been pointed out and you've jumped to the defence of Viz as though the people annoyed by the change are screaming at the top of their lungs how evil Viz is. It's not as if most of us are going to stop buying the books - I'm certainly not going to stop buying them. But this is the Viz media topic, not the Viz love-in topic, and I don't see the need to bemoan civil criticism.
I'm certainly not going to stop buying them.
Good, 'cause not supporting the speed-up simply because of this would be beyond foolish.
And sadly… something I'd expect you people (anime/manga fans) to do.
Personally, if I may, I'm just getting sick and tired of hearing people complain about how VIZ tones down the swearing. Seriously, I wish they left something better too, but I get the point already, and it's not gonna ruin the integrity of the series. "Shove off" is fine, it doesn't have the same impact as "Eat crap" of "Shove it", but I get the idea, he's disrespecting his superiors.
I disagree with the changes VIZ has made but it's not like they're unreasonable. They've gotten shit from school librarians for the stuff they've had in the magazine in the past. And yes it's rated T for Teen so I do think the changes are a bit much, but the fact is it's still Shonen Jump for a reason, it's 10 and up material we're mostly dealing. And it's not like it doesn't have enough booze, violence, and suggestive material left in to NOT qualify as 13 and up material, VIZ is trying to keep a double-standard. Really, I think the best thing is to edit the magazine but keep everything uncut in the graphic novels, that seems like a reasonable compromise between VIZ's company standards and what the fans want.
And again, has anyone who dislikes the way VIZ does things ever brought it to their attention, whether it's directly at a con or through mail or something?
It's funny how Viz uses tame language while Funimation uses harsh language when both the manga and anime are aimed at the same age group. I'm not going to shoot Funi a memo telling them to lighten up with the swearing, which gets to be a bit much at times, and I see it as being utterly pointless to tell a big company like Viz how to do it's job. I just want to vent my annoyances and let it go.
Yeah, I agree. Funi is too much and Viz is too little. What we need it something in the middle. The thing is, Viz used to have a fair amount of swearing but for some reason they lightened up.
I'm a little peeved at the toning down of the swearing and such, and I agree that the vulgarity is an important part of his character, but I'm sure we can all agree that the art is really what's defining him as a badass in this scene, not the words, right? Even the original Japanese printing has limits on how strong a swear they can use, right? (I actually don't really understand how Japanese view swearing in relation to age-appropriateness, so I could be wrong here) I figure that, since the characters are already not allowed to speak "realistically", that is, with the rudest words in the language at their disposal, why does it matter how many tiers are dropped?
That said, I am not happy with a trend of Viz changing things instead of just translating them. Even if today is inconsequential, they could later decide to reword certain segments and seriously screw up the plot or meaning of a line. My question is this, as someone who is buying the volumes principally to support One Piece in North America, with collection and appreciation as close secondary reasons, does buying them now send the wrong impression? Many animes and mangas are eventually released uncut in North America, I feel this would be good for One Piece too, but they aren't going to happen if the manga isn't successful at any level. On the other hand, though, good sales with the edits could send the message that fans don't care what is done with the series as long as it's represented in some form.
Anyways, just something I wanted to get people's opinion on. I've been reading One Piece for awhile, and I love it to death, but I'm somewhat of a casual fan. I don't really understand a lot about how the world of manga works.
I know HXH was censored for violence and I'd assume swearing, if too strong, would be censored too.
And again, has anyone who dislikes the way VIZ does things ever brought it to their attention, whether it's directly at a con or through mail or something?
Indeed, and I'll emailing them to ask if it could be changed in the volume release. Sadly I'm on the wrong side of the atlantic to attend cons.
Can someone confirm that it is indeed "tell them to shove off", and which issue of Jump it appears in?
I wonder what's going to be the next thing insignificant thing hardcore fans would mutter about. Not annoyed, but I find it fun to read.
"That crap king!"
Hey look! Crap was used that point. Lots of impact.
Edit: I'm sure if they used "Shove it", people would still want to eat shit.
"Shove off"? Well, that tears it. I'm preparing my white out and pen. One of my favorite lines off all time, and it's bowdlerized into this? Shove it would have been markedly better. Imbeciles. :|

As far as I know, "swearing" in Japan is similar to the way it is in America, but rather than it being a taboo that restricts media and content ratings, it is just not nice. People can say it in family and even younger viewer's programs, and children know not to say those things. I recently played Mario and Luigi RPG 3, and while I couldn't understand 90% of the dialogue, I noticed Bowser saying "kuso" (shit/crap) several times. I personally think that the US should take this approach to swearing. It's part of the language, it's everywhere, and it's very rude, so don't say it, even if others do.
Good, 'cause not supporting the speed-up simply because of this would be beyond foolish.
And sadly… something I'd expect you people (anime/manga fans) to do.
I'm glad you're not one of us. Now get off our forum kindly sir.
Well, that's another thing to add to the list of "annoying things Viz has done". I'm reeeeally hoping the speed-up volumes will be a little better.

It's horrible because not only is it watered down, but also because "shove off" refers to a completely different thing that makes it extra awkward sounding in conveying jack..
I decided to send an e-mail to Viz since asking them on twitter seems to be pointless. It's mostly to try and correct Zoro's name but I'll add other stuff if people want me too. I'm not the greatest writer ever so if anyone can suggest some improvements please do since I haven't sent it yet:
Dear Viz
As a fan of One Piece I am very pleased and excited about the Manga catch up starting in January.
However, myself and many of the One Piece fan base would appreciate if Roranoa Zolo’s name could be changed back to his correct name, Zoro. I believe Zoro was originally used in early published material but was changed to match the 4kid’s anime dub which used the incorrect name: Zolo.
Since 4kid’s are no longer dubbing the anime and the dubbing is now being dubbed by FUNImation who are using his correct name (Zoro) in the uncut releases. Zoro has also been used in the One Piece games, One Piece: Unlimited Adventure, released in North America and One Piece: Unlimited Cruise Part 1 and Part 2 which has currently been released in Europe which also uses Zoro despite having no involvement with FUNImation in the localisation. Along with the announcement of the speed up, it was also announced that Viz was working with FUNImation for the speed up and I feel using the same names would help with continuity between the Anime and Manga versions, if Viz was prepared to match the 4kid’s dub, I feel Viz should also be prepared to match the FUNImation dub.
Eiichiro Oda himself has also written Zoro in English in his wanted poster which appears later in the series.
Also I was wondering if there was any possibility of releasing the One Piece data books (Blue, Red and Yellow) and the One Piece Color walk volumes 2 and 3?
Thanks for your time and I hope you take this into consideration.
If anyone wants to use it, your free to do so. If the Dragonball community can band together then so can we, complaining on a fan forum won't get results so I suggest that we get a campaign going to get stuff done.
Edit: Also, does anyone remember if the 10th Anniversary used Zoro or Zolo in the English subtitles?
Threaten their CEO with pipe bombs.
Can anyone confirm exactly what Smoker says in the Viz version and which issue of Jump it's in, so I can compose an email?
Threaten their CEO with pipe bombs.
Gomu Gomu no Murder? No Agent Orange this time round?
Good. Now that you "people" are in line, the world can continue to rotate.
Remember, it's just one line. Support the speed-up regardless. Ok, thanks.

Why are you even here?
Just because I don't bitch about one line doesn't mean I can't be here. I'm here because I'm excited about the speed-up. A few of the kids here are getting uppity though, so…

What part of Zkaiser's post made you think you could post again.
What part of Zkaiser's post made you think you could post again.
Who cares. I'll post when I see fit unless the mods say otherwise.
Tell them to shove off? Seriously Viz?
Who says "Shove Off" anymore? That phrase was obsolete in the 1970s!
Look, I don't care they didn't use "Eat Shit" or crap but Shove Off? It completely diminishes the impact of that scene, and it's even more insulting when Shonen Jump books are marketed to Teenagers.
Viz needs to stop using words and phrases that only a Bible-thumping Republican 78 year old woman would find offensive.
By the way, I looked through the first volume of Viz Piece and noticed a lot of curse words (specifically in the scene where Higuma beats up Luffy) but from the Free Manga Preview at their site the curse words were toned down to a G-Rated Level.
Like I've said, I don't care about overly using profanity but when you make one version, and then edit future prints to be different… why? It's like 4Kids all over again.
Maybe they got a new chief editor or something who's making Viz tone the Shonen Jump line down all across the board (note that their other titles don't have too much swearing either). After reading what some of the executives at Marvel and DC have done, I wouldn't be surprised.
''Shove off'' is still pretty rude and surly, it's just that we've become desensitized to stuff like this because we people swear all the goddamn time these days.
And yes, that was intentional.

Well the "curses" here sound like something out of a Silver Age DC Comic and that was the 1960s when Batman had stories with aliens and magic, and Superman pulled powers out of his ass.
I'm not asking for Liefeld-style EXTREME, I just want a middle ground.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to burn my Joe Quesada Effigy (Spider-Man making a deal with the devil what is wrong with you?)
Edit: Also, does anyone remember if the 10th Anniversary used Zoro or Zolo in the English subtitles?
They used Zolo despite the poster still saying Zoro.
Anyone picked up this new issue of Jump yet?

You're the only person attempting to be condescending to people who have offered civil criticism of Viz. Don't worry, we're laughing at you, not with you.
Yeah. Like I said, four Naruto chapters, one One Piece.
Also, Viz is calling Eneru 'Kami': http://www.viz.com/products/products.php?product_id=9228
Well that's certainly an interesting radar dodge. Harken's back to their Dragon Ball days. Glad they're not going with King. They're keeping Shandia, that's good. Looks like they haven't changed any other terms for the future volumes up to Vol. 38.
Looking good so far. The only thing I'm worried about is the Teech, Ogre, and G. Zass nonsense.
Looks like Viz are sticking with "Merry-go", and using "Wyper".
@Yuugi's:
Yeah. Like I said, four Naruto chapters, one One Piece.
Is this Issue 80, Aug 2009, and was your earlier smoker quote verbatim?
Just want to make sure I've got my facts straight before I email Viz.

Is there an age restriction in the states on comics with vaguely religious themes?
So the release schedule is:
24 - 28: Jan 5th
29-33: Feb 2nd
34 - 38: March 2nd
Providing these dates are correct.
Hmm, Kami works pretty well.
I also like that Viz is dropping all four volumes at the start off those 3 months.
It is #81. Got it yesterday.
