So essentially 3 chapters across 4 episodes coming up and the anime is currently 32 chapters behind the manga. These are dialogue heavy (but important) but with little no action, not sure how they will pull it off.
EDIT: Read up on this http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2016-12-09/why-does-pokemon-look-so-different-now/.109646
Does anyone else think that Toei is quite behind the times when it comes to innovation through workflow? OLM seem to know what they are doing. -
Dialogue heavy episodes tend to do the best when it comes to the 1 chapter or sub-1 chapter pacing.
-
Neat to see that Midori Matsuda will be back - I wonder if she's going to be a new addition to the regular rotation (meanwhile, I'm going to see about gathering the Dragon Balls so that Ichikawa can do the same), and now that Tokoro's managed to claw his way out of Deguchi's basement for the time being I hope he can help Shingaki regain some of his old luster.

OLM seem to know what they are doing. It's been pretty well established at this point that Toei is an animation studio that overstretches themselves. They are pretty much the worst case example of how to handle animation production for several series across the board. The reversioning issues with Dragon Ball Kai Buu Chapters (which are Funimation DBZ Orange Boxes levels of problematic), the production of Sailor Moon Crystal, Dragon Ball Super's animation consistency issues and even those they have people like Shida and Nakatani for every decently to well done parts of animation they do on two shows and their movies there's always issues elsewhere. I will admit the last two years they have been a little more balanced but they don't have they are still the weakest production link in an industry that is strife with issues.

Sadly, it seems like Toei animation does not have control over this situation, that's why it will never have the same production circumstances as Pokemon.
As far as we know, companies such as: Shueisha, Bandai, and Fuji Tv, prefer how the show is going right now, despite the bad pacing, the anime generates hype that might factor in the high sales, it also makes it easier for Bandai to create new games that cover new content every time with already established color-schemes and voices through the anime, and lets not forget apps/carddass and other promotional material for theme parks and galleries, this wouldn't be the case if the show had a break or a big filler arc to increase the gap between the manga and anime, moreover the movies help more people to get into One Piece, and it seems the special episodes have a pretty decent ad revenue for Fuji Tv, these factors pile up to decrease the work force on the show itself. Other problems such as not having an ending song anymore might be because of avex or other companies. Furthermore, Toei animation is a studio that works on a ton of shows at the same time, of course their talents are gonna be divided and all over the place, right now we have: One Piece, Dragon Ball Super, Digimon Universe, Tiger Mask W, and Pretty Cure airing, not mentioning movies, ovas, and upcoming shows that of course have a pre-production. On the other side we have OLM, which works on many shows as well, but we never saw something spectacular coming out of them like Pokemon, I mean very few people praise Beyblade and Youkai Watch for their animation quality. Thankfully, even though the problems keeps piling up on the back of the studio, Toei animation still delivers very good episodes when they push themselves enough, these good episodes are not only present in One Piece, we also have Tiger Mask W which is quite solid, that show didn't have a single terrible episode so far, also Toei shows including One Piece are keeping a consistent quality right now. Dragon Ball Super had a much worse case than One Piece, starting its production shortly after the screening of the Resurrection F movie, but nowadays Super looks acceptable for a long running show. Hopefully, one day the situation will be different, I can't say that I don't want more quality from the show. -
Tomita has been very active lately. -
I said this in that episode's thread, but I do wonder if the recent trend in Zo where he's been doing a lot more lower-key character animation than he's done in the past is a sign that one of these days he's going to follow in Ito's, Takara's, and Matsuda's footsteps and be promoted to animation director.

yeah i agree it feels like his taking the same route as takra & ito where those guys where animating like half or two thirds of an episode before gearing up to take up the animation director role (ito did most harjrudin vs vise & takara luffy & doffy haki clash).

Something tells me that 773 may be a filler episode because if they were doing a chapter an episode, 775 would have everyone going to the Reverie but it won't have that because, well, look at it's title. Either that or they're stretching 3 chapters into 4 episodes because the anime version of this arc is supposedly longer than the manga version meaning it won't be exactly one chapter per episode

I think during the Sanji and Bege stuff and the Poneglyphs stuff they stretched chapters out between multiple episodes so this could be the case. The title for 775 makes it look like they're going to fight Jack which never happens and I doubt it'll be filler so I guess it's the episode where they leave Zou for Whole Cake Island if my suspicions are correct
-
Thanks for the translation, ScotchInformer. Although, I have a question.
The Titles
Is the black text under the titles the episode synopsis for each episode? If so, could you translate for us?

Fighting Jack? No Way, because it wasn´t happening in the manga. Now I curious about the episodes 776+.

Don't get excited, the titles are misleading. They are simply adapting 3 chapters into 4 episodes again. Also unlike last year there is no big Film or TV special that would take away needed animators (which is good!), but in turn this means there will be no tie-in movie arcs to slow the anime down. Anime is still 30+ chapters behind the manga so we could be waiting a long time before we see filler again.

I prefer sloppy tie-in movie arc to slow down the anime instead of stretching the manga-adaptions much more.

I think most long-time viewers and manga readers do too!

I have a cool idea for an arc before the adaption of "Totto Land Arc" begins:
Since the "Totto Land Arc" is a Sanji-centric-arc, would be a nice opportunity for a "Baratie Arc"-remake. With updated animation and more closely to the manga-storyline (reason for that claiming), it would be glorious.

There's a high chance they will remake the arc as a special this summer, but not as an arc. Similar to how most other 'Episode of' specials (and extended films) were aired when the events tied into the main story conveniently.
-
90% sure we might get a special to commemorate the franchise's 20th Anniversary than a Baratie remake.

Yeah you are right, but we should not stop dreaming about a "Baratie Remake" as a arc instead of a 2h tv-movie-special

Good point, but it wouldn´t be better to reanimate the first chapter or better the first arc?
-
Eh. Do we really need to see the first chapter reanimated again for a third(?) time?
-

Its Toei, they will milk their Franchise for money
-
They've pretty much animated everything they can at the very beginning of the story. My bet is on Episode of Sanji, Marineford or another original special.
-
Episode 772 is going to be the rest of 819 and some of 820 I imagine, and then 773 will finish off 820 and go into 821. Episodes 774-775 seem to just be finishing off 821, based on the titles, with maybe the beginning of 822 thrown in there.

I thought, that the chapter 819 was fully animated in episode 771.

The last 3,4 pages were missing, I think they might put Jack's return as a cliffhanger at the end of 772.

You talk as though that can be controlled. Also, you should read this:
@SunChopper:
In addition, some people think that fewer pages means worse pacing, and some people think that slower camera movement/switching means worse pacing. I feel sorry to say this, but these are two typical misconceptions about pacing. For example, #675 had only 13 pages covered, and it's camera movement/switching speed was very fast, but indeed this episode's pacing was too fast to express the the roots of Kyros's story. Have a comparison between this episode with the introduction of Kyros in #634, one may find that the depth was totally different. #676 had the same problem.
BTW, #662 was just a totally opposite example. This episode was covered by a full chapter, but the pacing was just awful, incredibly awful. It could have been a great episode, but the poor storyboard, poor episode direction, and the poor music choice just ruined this episode. The one who directed this episode (I feel sad to mention his name) should leave One Piece anime, ASAP.
Just like what I said before, a good paced episode needs a good timing control, good camera movement/switching design, good music choice, and good technique of expression. And this arc do have lots of less-than-1-chapter-covered epiodes in this arc has these advantages.
He did go on to agree that the covering of chapters/fillers should be much better than it is, but just because an episode covers less pages doesn't mean its pacing is bad. 772 this week only covered half of a chapter that was mostly about talking but it was pretty fun to watch
-
You talk as though that can be controlled. Also, you should read this:
I don´t mind to have filler- or extended-scenes to fill certain story-parts, which was cut out. But since the Fishman Island Arc, I feel that Toei want to stretched their Anime to have a big gap to the Manga-Stand.
He did go on to agree that the covering of chapters/fillers should be much better than it is, but just because an episode covers less pages doesn't mean its pacing is bad.
It depends, how it was produced. I think, that 1 Chapter per Episode could be cool, but I prefer more 2 Chapter per Episode.

Does someone know by any chances what happened to Ishizuka? He was my favourite AD…
-
Nagamine Tatsuya and Nakamura Ryouta are the series directors for Dragon Ball Super starting with Episode #77, so don't expect to see them work on One Piece for a while.
-

Ishizuka is my fav AD aswell, his hasn't been as active but his only been working on movies & specials in the last year.
he recently worked on the toei movie Popin-Q, before that was the tv one piece special Adventure of nebuland before that was Episode of sabo and Dragon ball z resurrection F.

Next batch of titles and staff are:
776: ''Descending the Elephant - Setting Sail for Sanji's Retrieval'' (Yasunori Koyama/Masayuki Takagi)
777: ''To the Reverie - Princess Vivi and Princess Shirahoshi'' (Katsumi Tokoro/Shigefumi Shingaki)
778: ''To the Reverie - Rebecca and the Sakura Kingdom'' (Yoshihiro Ueda/Shuuichi Ito)
779: ''Kaido Returns - The Worst Generation Threatened!'' (Kentaro Fujita/Yusuke Isochi)There will most likely be a break following 779 due to the marathon on the 12th of March in Japan, so if there's another short filler coming up like the latest episode seems to confirm, that'll start on the 18th and 779 will probably cover up to about the mid-point of chapter 824.

The Reverie stuff was all in one chapter so it looks like they'll be adding in filler stuff for Vivi and Shirahoshi and Rebecca and Dalton to have them fit an entire episode

I figured this belongs here since it's about animation.
Why is the animation (and art) in the openings… bad now?
Opening 12, 13, 14, and 15 had fluid movement, and even emulated the art of manga pretty nicely. And good choreography with the song, most importantly.
But then the art and visual direction got worse with 16, then 18, and 19. They're actually hard to watch compared the openings above. Anybody know why?
