Sonuvabitch, I missed it. Oh well.
Episode 372: "The Battle for Superiority Starts! Luffy vs. Luffy"

Crossbones over at KF posts in their episode discussion thread, and recently started to post which animation director was in charge of each episode. For this episode, the director was known for doing pretty bad episodes animation-wise, so he's called the worst director at KF. Like you said, though, they didn't do too bad this episode, and I actually liked it overall.
Next week is going to be sweet!
Thx a lot! Thats what you get from stop reading the old fansub groups' forums

Well, I watched the episode. Animation was much better than usual, and I liked the little subtle bits like the fish-eye lens on Moria, and seeing the blood actually trickle down Nami's face. I do find it odd that a dead body that's been frozen for five hundred years has that much blood left in it.
As for this animation director, Masayuki Fujita, I actually recognize his style. What you've gotta look for is the faces of Nami and Robin. Their eyes and chins are shaped a bit differently, and the result is that Nami looks a lot more anime-ish, and Robin looks younger because her eyes are drawn bigger. The art overall for this guy is pretty decent most of the time, but this is the first time he's done an action scene like this, I believe.

AND…
Would you mind if this guy does an action sequence again?
-
Well, if it's as good as this one, yes. He's obviously done them in the past, but I don't remember them being as polished as this one.
-
I don't like Masayuki Fujita's art style much, but sometimes he can do satisfying action scenes - a somewhat recent one that comes to mind was the "5 years ago" Brooke vs Ryuma on 352.
These days he's being better at animating fights than Kenji Yokoyama (368) and especially Naoki Murakami (371). -
I thought the animation, especially at the climax was very good, better than I expected. Sure there were a few slow and stilted spots in the episode, but leading up to such a well executed climax made it worth it.
However, the next episode's animation looks simply phenomenal, among the best of the entire arc.
-
GREAT GREAT GREAT ep, (maybe I'm over doing it) but, good ep., we finally get 2 chapters an ep back, and the animation to me was great! Finally, we're back!
-
I like to think that One Piece was drawn by one team, and the fluctuations in quality being caused by mood swings, hangovers, and sugar level. The less I worry about it, the better the overall experience.

Agreed. It might not have been the best episode in the arc, but they did the chapter justice. The anime has been pretty good ever since the Odz-fight started, which is completely opposite from what I had feared.

New opening within next episode ?… You sure of that ?...
I thought Brook would be in as part of the crew, so why now and not after his flash-back ?… -
You're a logical human being, Emilio, and you're absolutely right.
Sadly, Toei are not logical.
They put Robin in the third opening, about 15 episodes or so before she joined,
and that was a HUGE motherfrickin' spoiler.
It was a turd in the mouth, I tell you.
Thankfully, Brooke being part of the crew in the next opening is more of a fart in the face. -

True, Brook joining was pretty obvious ever since they learned about his connection with Laboon. Just about EVERYONE saw it coming in the manga, so it's not exactly a HUGE spoiler if they include him in the next opening.
-

Well that's not the first weird Toei decision so… just hope Brook'll be in as a crewmember even if that's kind of a spoiler.
And I just learned it was a We are remake, I'd have prefered something new…
Seems like they won't ever change, it's always recycling... -

I heard the Japanese just dont mind spoilers as much, so the Robin in the opening thing wasnt a big deal. And it could be that most people in Japan READ THE MANGA FIRST, so the majority of the audience and OP fans already knew she was joining around the time the arc was beginning in the anime. You have to remember manga is the main way ppl are introduced to OP, and it's the reverse in the west.

Anywho, Nightmare Luffy's battle may not have looked as epic as in the manga, but it was still pretty nice, IMO. Can't wait to see the crew get back up (yet again! ) and finish this stuff off! Nos vemos, Jungle P!

^this.
Damn, even the games give away everything. Brooke is a Straw Hat in Unlimited Cruise, the crew's exchange with Kuma later this arc is also partially spoiled.
Unlimited Adventure spoiled Franky's joining and so on. Pretty much everyone with an interest in OP reads the manga in Japan, so they just don't care. -
Awesome episode,They did a good job with the Sword move
-
Hrm. I must say, I was disappointed with the Nightmare Luffy fight. Of course, I realized that the voice was different(I like the voice in UC) an episode or two ago, however the fight itself? Hrm. Luffy didn't wind his arm up, but I suppose I can let that slide. The big thing was Storm though. It didn't seem as great as a finishing move could be. Really, they made the area that was being hit too small as it was wider in the manga, and instead of seeing Moria's head being bashed in with furious punches it just flopped around like a wet noodle. Animation was fine, and I did like the crazy angle on Moria when he was ordering Oz to smash Usopp.
Well, anyway, next week looks good. Excited.

Wow, you liked the ultra squeaky NL? Well, we all have our preferences. The fight was pretty good…I would've liked seeing Moria get more punches to the face but I thought that was being implied with Storm anyway. I think the "Pistol" face-hit was still more than enough. And yeah, the "Storm" in the manga seemed to take up more of Oz, but I could still feel the ferocity...and that's what counts (imo).
-
Pretty good episode. One major complaint was that Luffy's pistol to Moria's face wasn't wound up like it was in the manga but otherwise a pretty well done episode overall.
-
i thought the nightmare Luffy fight was alright. The manga definitely has more punch and intensity to it. but it's still good. A little bit disappointed by storm. I dunno… it seems that back in the anime when luffy used storm to defeat crocodile, it was just more epic in both presentation and feeling.. this kinda felt like a soda that's lost it's carbonation. It looks awesome in the manga... but anime just lacked the sort of all out Luffy-screaming-at-the-top-of-his-lungs feel.
But regardless, they wrapped up two chapters in One episode, which is very nice and didn't horribly drag out the nightmare luffy vs oz fight.
I loved the insane angle on Moria when he ordered Oz to stomp on Usopp.. very cool.
I noticed new music too... when did that start?
Looks like the movie 6 (and 9) fellas are at it again next ep. Can't wait for the finale.
-
When Odz was being pushed into the building they played some Movie 9 music I believe. Another piece of Movie 9 music they've started using recently for Zoro is that tune with the oriental-sounding bit in the middle. The yfirst used it during the Ryuuma fight I believe.
-
also, is the new version of "we are" debuting next ep?
-
I believe so.
16 I believe sos.
-
So does anyone have any awesome gifs of this episode? A very gif worthy episode I think

Things that would have made that fight better.
- More dust
- Luffy smashing Odz through trees.
- faceshot flashes during storm
- They drew Nitemare Luffy too small, thus his GG Strom misses his Odz's face.
