Ian McShane is an homage to Blackbeard. I loved this guy as an actor since I've seen him as Al Swearengen in Deadwood. Brilliant actor! I'm very much looking forward to see him as Blackbeard.
Honestly, there needs to be more Al Swearengen in all of our lives. One of the best television characters in the past decade.

The problem with the sequels is that they ignore the average Disney movie watching IQ and decided to use concepts that are complex, such as psychological trauma of a near death experience and personality disorder.

Have to echo some love for Ian McShane and how he played Swearengen–that was some badass work. I lost interest in these movies pretty quickly but I'll check it out just for him. Mark Kermode's crazed rant about the third movie makes me hesitant, though.

Best example would be the big pirates all deciding to fight together and then most of them dont get any screentime during the fight, because there just wasnt time to show them. I thought the story between Davy Jones and Calypso was way to rushed to, which made it rather unsatisfying. Parts 1&2 were much more enjoyable to me.

:wassat: Undead were introduced in Pirates of the carribean before One Piece got to it. And I at least know Monkey Island had it before Pirates of the Caribbean did. Mermaids seem a pretty common place things in sailor and pirate stories. Blackbeard's a famous pirate, so it's not like anyone's copying each other by using him in a story.

Pirate Character has a debt to pay to Davy Jones/Jabba The Hutt and spends most of this movie just trying to get that accomplished, but other shenanigans befall him. Second movie ends with said Pirate being taken by an underling of the guy he owed something to (The Kraken, Bobba Fett)

This is why the third was not so good, from what we saw in the trailer, it looked like it would be an epic pirate battle, but yeah, they just… sat there. That was so lame. I felt let down at that point, and I think the director put too much attention on Elizabeth and Will, which was a mistake. I really wish they put more into Davey Jones and Calypso's relationship too, that was pretty irritating as well. Also, when she became a giant.... yeah that was retarded. I was hoping she would've looked way cooler than that.
But as usual, budget constraints ruin everything. And I thought this was a "big budget film"

As to which is my favorite, it's a toss up between the first and the second. Really just depends on the one I've most recently listened to.

Its funny how many times people brings this comparison up between Star Wars and any fantasy/adventure-series. The fact of the matter is you can relate the Star Wars plot with almost any fantasy series. Boy leaves his normal life to go on a journey to become a man following a old teacher to beat a lot of bad guys, throw in the occasional "I am your father" twist and you have the plot of every fiction story ever told, before and after Star Wars.

10 days away for the movie and no sign of activity for this long….anyway, anyone here heard of the soundtrack yet, maybe even saw a advanced screening>
Soundtrack comes out on the 17th. Hans Zimmer is on board again.
But Klaus Bedelt gave us the first movie and the only really memorable tune from the franchise. And given that I already have the previous soundtracks and the only real standout theme in any of them is "He's a Pirate" and the various refrains, I don't know how much this will actually add, but I'm sure that it'll appear a whole bunch in the course of the movie.
Much more looking forward to Book of Mormon which hits the same day.
Well no Will or Elizabeth to clutter things this time, just Jack, Gibbs and Barbossa coming back for this time around. Everything else is fresh game, I'm just hoping the plots as good.
I really didn't mind 3 at all, I will admit all the deal making and breaking did get rather annoying and I was hoping for a more epic battle (you know the other ships joining in to fight) but otherwise I enjoyed it. 2 was pretty good too if just for the fact it was more straight-forward, loved the natives scene. 1 for the same reason
Who else is seeing Pirates 4 tonight? I'm seeing the NY screening on 42nd.
Going to see it on Thursday 19th, even though I've been convinced it'll be Shark Jump. Just a casual fan of the Pirates movies. Forget lots of what happened in them, for example. Depp's acting is brilliant.
Actually if this one is even close to the book its supposedly based on, it might end up being the best one.
If nothing else, at least its a stand-alone again so it won't get too overwhelmed like 2 and 3 did.

Now that I am able to charge my phone, a little more depth.
I definitely like the contained in one movie plots more. I think it is fine of they want to do more and make it a series of adventures of Jack Sparrow.
There are a few things that do feel a little forced, but not so much as a that character would never do that kind of way, but more of a let's get on with it and rush this part kind of way.
The music is more of the classic themes with a bit of a new spin, but nothing special.
As much as I hate 3D in movies, it was done well.
If you're looking for something more like the first Pirates, this comes close. I wouldn't say it is better than the first though, but I may just need to see it again (cause I have rewatched the first enough to notice the little things).

One more quick note. Some scenes seemed to have a bit more of a goofiness to it.
Just got back from seeing the movie, it was pretty good.
Jack was Jack and Barbossa was Barbossa without overdoing it like they did in 3, which was really appreciated.
Blackbeard was also pretty awesome, and it was nice to see a completely unrepentant villain who didn't end up being one-dimensional.
Penelope Cruz was also pretty alright, and didn't degrade into the standard Sexy Action Girl bullshit that I hate so fucking much. It made sense for her to be where she was, and she didn't do anything that would be completely unrealistic.
Oh, and the twist at the movie's climax… that shit was fucking hilarious.

Saw this movie last night. It was pretty good. I liked the fact that I was able to follow the story without having seen the first three movies. Although I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had seen 1-3 first.
I liked the parts when "He's A Pirate" played. Not for the scenes, just for the music. :ninja:
It was a fun jaunt. Mind you, I'm only a casual pirates fan. I've seen all three, but I don't exactly remember what happened off by heart. Johnny Depp was brilliant again and carried it - but Penelope Cruz was great also. Keith Richards' cameo was nice as well. Geoffrey Rush was amazing!
Richard Griffiths made me cringe something shocking. I did like the sequence of Jack outrunning the soldiers in the town square though - I thought that was brilliant.
! The end? I thought when the Chalices got thrown in the water, the Mermaid was gonna take it amidst all the fighting and use it to save her Christian boyfriend from dying. Would have been a much better ending imho - while all the fighting is going on, nobody notices their goals are long taken by the mermaid!
! So they Christian guy died right? And she knew that so she was putting him out of his misery?
The only thing I didn't like was the portrayal of Blackbeard. That was pretty shit.
Saw it in 3D after not having seen a 3D flick for a far few years. Brilliant. The pre-ads and logos are always the best though. They make sure they zoom right out at you.
I just want to see the reviews on blackbeard before I watch it.

There's always been a major disconnect between critics and general audiences on the series for whatever reason; probably more so than any other film series out there.
I just saw it.
It was a fun jaunt, but just that really.
Jack, Barbossa, and Blackbeard were great, though I wish Blacky had been more menacing. Barbossa in the first movie seemed more threatening than Blacky was here.
! for a guy that can apparently control ships, it almost seemed a bit of a waste that he used it so rarely, and even once unseen while taking down The Black Pearl - I really wish they would have actually shown that part rather than Barbossa talk about it

Everything else was much, much weaker.
Having a ship fighting scene at all would have been awesome, but over half the movie, they're running around on … er ... some unnamed kind of forgettable island.
Jack and Spanish chick supposedly have a thing, but I didn't feel it at all. Just felt more like Jack was trying to save her hide because he was in the neighborhood rather than because he felt anything for her.

And while kind of cute, Clergyman and the mermaid sub-plot … I don't know - it should have been played up more than it was.
