I received some IMs from my friend:

      –---

him: Luffy's wearing the armor in this chapter I'm still on
him: "HEY!!! IF AN ARMOR IS JUST LYING AROUND!! ISN'T IT A MAN'S ROMANCE TO WEAR IT!!?"
me: yeah just watched that ep a few days ago
him: I wonder when they're gonna stop misusing the word "Romance"

      ?

      Thus concludes my

It can mean something having to do with adventures…. Like "adventurism" and heroes and stuff.

Also, this really should be in the Hall of Shame.

It was an odd translation in that context. "Romantic duty" would have worked better than "romance" personally.

Romance doesn't just have to mean loving, hugging, kissing and fucking someone. You can have passion for anything. The word isn't being misused.

                1st two definition results:

                1. a novel or other prose narrative depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits, etc., usually in a historical or imaginary setting.
                2. the colorful world, life, or conditions depicted in such tales.

Has anyone actually read the title of Volume One, or heard/read any of Montblanc Cricket's dialogue?

you couldn't have thought that either were referring to the lovey-dovey definition, considering that One Piece is conspicuously lacking any sort of romantic relationships entirely.

If you read more of medieval history(like King Aurthor and the Knights of Round Table), you can tell that the term romance is very very broad. If it's anything about romance being misused, it's the way it's being misused today. It does not really mean kissing, cuddling or sex. RuNa post has a good idea on it.

I'm glad that One Piece doesn't use the modern version.

Agreed. In fact, I'd venture so far as to say that "a romance of the high seas" is as fitting and concise as a definition of One Piece can get without stretching into paragraphs and pages about the world and its inhabitants. Truly, the word is not being misused in the slightest here.
