What I am wondering, is Luffy made of rubber (he can stretch, flatten or expand) or does his power just give him the ability to stretch and he just calls himself rubber?
I personally think he just has streching abilities, we have never seen him flatten or expand (Gum Gum Baloon is just streching out his body in a different way) so it's either he can but chooses not to or he just plain old can't.

It's hard to explain exactly how it works (although Ranier had a very good scientific explanation in some other thread that sounded oddly plausible) but Luffy is in fact rubber. One situation I can point out to prove that is in his battle with Eneru, he wasn't effected by his power of electricity because of his rubber body. (let's not argue about the logistics of that, though. ;))

Actually he did…I think it was Baratie where he turned his body into a net. Also, if he wasn't rubber, falling off a cliff or having objects of insurmountable weight dropped on him (ie in Little Garder, or the mast in Syrup village) would have killed him.
I think it's just the properties of rubber. His skin isn't shiny or anything. Besides, his whole body has been affected, so if he were rubber, wouldn't his blood be as well?
There really isn't any logical way to think about it. He's just a rubberman. :lol: The properties of rubber, sure, but it's definately much more than just being able to stretch.
Well when he gets hit then he says that he can´t be hurt because his body is of rubber so that pretty much explains it.
Another thing that I wondered for a long time though how come that a rubber fist like his can do such a big damage to others but then I realized that it is part of his strenght. The speed and intensity with which he hits his opponents is like when you land in water after jumping out of a plane. It will crush you. That said I wonder how hard his hits would be if his fists wouldn´t be of rubber…OUCH!!!
I'd assume that he just has the abilities and outer form of rubber, considering the fact that he can still take damage, and none of his attacks would have taken effect, if his fists were made of rubber, as Ivotas said.
Well actually I meant that he can do damaga with rubber fists. It´s just his power that makes his hit so strong that it can even hurt other people (like I said jump from into water from an airplane and you see the power of acceleration).
And that´s actually the same reason why he can take damage. The strenght of other people determines the impact on him. Alvida wasn´t strong enough to hurt him, but Foxy´s strenght was sure powerful enough to hurt even a rubber body. :D
What we know for sure is that Luffy's bodily fluids obviously aren't rubber. He bleeds, salivates, sweats and pees. However, I always thought he was literally rubber for the most part. Quite obviously his muscles, veins, nerves and bones are, if not rubber, similar to rubber, just like the outside of his body. Still, many other Paramecia fruit users seem to will themselves to change, and when they do, they're the real thing, they do not just resemble it. Like Mr. 1, for example.
Although Luffy seems to be rubber man 24/7, there are instances when he doesn't stretch, although one supposes he could, like when he's being held back by a crewmate. And yet his Devil's Fruit ability works automatically, even when he isn't expecting anything (Like Buggy's, but unlike Miss Valentine's). Is it possible that while some DF users will their abilities on, others will them off? If so, why would Luffy ever will it when in such situation that he needs to be held back? And if he can't will his ability off, why doesn't he wobble as he goes (rubber bones can't be all that firm)?
There are so many questions about it that Oda alone could answer, assuming that he has given it that much thought. This is starting to give me a headache and I haven't reached any kind of conclusion. Maybe we're thinking too much?
Anything solid in him such as blood veins, brain(that's if he has one =p), bones anything makes him stretch, bounce etc etc like a rubber. Thus he is rubber. As what some villian in the first few arcs said, since i can't shoot you, i'll cut you. If you notice, any impact damage such as punches or something similar doesn't really hurt him.
sorta off topic here, but something always bugged me. since luffy is just rubber shouldn't his fruit be considered a logia fruit? even if it's not, maybe in the future when luffy masters on how to use his fruit it might evolve into a logia type?
No, Logia types are all elemental.
But y'know, if Luffy was really rubber, wouldn't it be obvious to tell? He always takes people by suprise. I've yet to find an instane of rubber or plastic looking exactly like skin.

Well shouldn´t Crocodile look like sand, Ace like fire, Smoker like smoke etc. I see it that if you eat a DF fruit you still look like you did before. You only get additional abilities.
not sure if anyone said it (i'm too lazy to read all the posts for it, i just skimeed through), but he isn't affected by electricity so he's gotta be rubber.
