Allright, now this sounds fucked. I was looking through my moms TV Guide and it shows at the bottom corner, this anime picture of a samurai. Naturally I was intrigued like any anime fan would be, but sadly, I was dissapointed. here's an excerpt of that very article from TV Guide, detailing"Afro Samurai"….the ultamite and supremly shitty sounding Samurai Champloo ripoff.

By the sounds of this it sounds like it will probobly have fans but for some reason, the street culture and modern anachronisms mixed with feudal japan and the traditional "Way of the Swordsman" theme aspect seems a bit familiar (Cough...Hack....Samurai Champloo...Cough). Does anyone else think this as well?

I can't really imagine Samuel L. Jackson voicing an anime charchter, much less a samurai one.

Eerr… made specifically for SpikeTV? I'm officially frightened. The last round of animation from them was... how shall I put it..... underwhelming (I'm trying to be generous here).

Even worse, this should have proper Sammy L Jackson dialogue in it, not some censored watered-down tv version of it - which it will. I want lines like 'Which one of you sorry little bitches wants to tell me where I can find the mother f***er who killed my father?' Stuff like Shinagamithe3rd has in his post. Its gotta be taken to a ludicrous exreme. But that'll get hit hard with the censor-stick. I think if they took this to the proper Tarantino-ish-blaxploitation-samurai-epic extreme they could make something pretty interestingly bad but they probably won't and so it will just be pretty bad.

Oh, also, what else has Mr. Jackson written that was in any way interesting? Oh, that's right, he's not a writer, he's an actor (ok, I could be wrong - don't hang me if I am).

Samuel jackson (While writing): "Hmm..okay now…first off "Fromaru" (Which is probobly gonna be his name or something like that) walks into the nearest McDougal-san's and says, "Gimme all yo' money bitches or i'm gonna cut you!", after he gets the money he goes to the nearest Opium den to buy a hit a crack and some Sake-and-Jack...oh hell yeah..i'm on a roll....this is good shit....Allright, cut to the big fight scene. Fromaru is clearly losin' to this muthafucka but he swiftly takes him down. He goes to the nearest police temple (which is something jackson would probobly create) and when he finds out the the Yakuza fucker who killed his father gets off with a slap on the wrist he throws some yen which stick in the wall merely inches from the policemans head....oh yeah...i'm damn good...."

Sorry, I don't live in the States, and I've never seen the channel, but.. that was one great line, Shinagami.

As for this Afro Samurai? I was never looking forward to it. I can just see a string of racial jokes involving black, white, or black and white people together, and a load of fake-ass wannabe animà stuff. Oh, and the word nger** being used about ten million times in one series.

Well, Champloo wasn't the first to blend samurai culture with modern ideas. It was one of many.

Yeah, but it's the most well known one that actually combined FEUDAL japan and modern anachronisms. Most anime like that use the swordsmanship aspect set in modern day, the only thing being near the samurai aspect is the fact that they use swords. Samurai Champloo was actually set in the past of feudal japan but with modern influences instead of set in future to present day japan with the only thing in common with the past is the swordsmanship.

Like the sig picture Right Click! Yeah, I have to admit that Samuel Jackson is a good actor in his own right…..but damn...his place isn't anime OR writing. It seems that he's the creator, writer, director, and voice of the main charachter. Gettin' a lil' full of ourselves aren't we Sammy?

I'm not as much worried about SLJ running the show as SpikeTV. I can see Gonzo working with SLJ and hopefully guideing him along and making a good show of it. Even as neutered as it will be for TV if it were just SLJ and Gonzo I would be fine. The animation will be great and the story will be interesting at least. Plus SLJ's voice is money. Pure gold. One of the best voices in Hollywood.

SpikeTV are the scary part. I can see them sitting in their board room thinking. I foresee a Stripperella cameo to help boost DVD sales (did they even bother with dvd?). I foresee a slew of WWE Wrestlers doing voice acting since Raw is their only big deal. I foresee product placement - LOTS of product placement. I foresee SpikeTV having a very negative effect if they are allowed.

Sorry to bump this topic, but I just about it. I must admit I did not make the connection between this show and Samurai Champloo immediately. I guess that's why I come to AP forums: to be enlightened. Like Kill Bill, the music for the series will be executed by the amazing RZA of the incredible Wu-Tang Clan. Samuel Jackson's presence in this series only makes me more interested. It could certainly turn out poorly (That's it! I've had it with this motherfuckin' afro on this motherfuckin' samurai!), but I am pretty anxious to see an episode or two right now. The company is starting out with only five episodes, but they will produce more if there is interest. Additionally, there is a trailer up on the official website (www.afrosamurai.com)).

He does give off that vibe, I suppose. I guess it just comes from taking a lot of oddball work. After his work in Pulp Fiction, I would have never picked him for a role in a Star Wars movie, Shaft, or a superhero flick (Frozone in the Incredibles), but he has found his niche. I guess the struggle for relevance keeps you afloat in Hollywood.

I saw the trailer in the Internet Media Thread after I posted it here. My apologies, Mr. Prince. The Afro Samurai site also shows some fellow with a gun and Afro Samurai with a cigarette, so it seems like the show will play out in the modern era. I was hoping that the show would be kept in feudal Japan, but the idea of an urban samurai has potential too.

There's Afro which is Samuel L Jackson in character, and then there's Ninja Ninja (guess what his character is) which is out of character pure SLJ "DONT FIGHT THAT MUTHAFUKA OR UZ GON DAIEEEEEE"

Anyway.. the story is weak, and the violence is overt in my opinion. Afro spits at someone and his head flies off basically, blood is everywhere and no one else really uses a sword, even the main bad guy uses dual pistols as a cowboy but somehow manages to lob off Afro's father's head during a showdown (Where the samurais run at each other and slice and then we see them on opposite sides)

If you like snakes on a plane.. You'll LOVE this!

Downloaded the first episode a few days ago. It was nice to look at but lacks substance, if they don't start with some stuff then this'll get boring fast. A samurai traveling around seeking revenge kicking all kinda ass worked for series like Samurai Jack but it ain't working here.
