Anyone else agree that Russia is gonna start WWIII soon? I was reading on Yahoo and apparently the US will be placing a missle defense base in Poland. It'll be 115 miles from Russia and Russia is pissed. Apparently they're threatening a military response and may use nuclear weapons. Not only that but Russia isn't showing signs of pulling out of Georgia according to another article. If they attack Poland, it'll definitely bring harsh response and military action by the US and EU. Come on, looking at the current events, it's hard to not see this coming. I'm not trying to insult the people here that are from Russia but I think their government is gonna get in some trouble if they nuke poland. Although, the US might not care. I'm pretty sure we didn't when Russia and Germany tag-teamed Poland back around WWII.

The war between Georgia and Russia is apparently all because of Georgia. Russia is ACTUALLY being kind (despite what has happened in the past). They're saving civilians and everything. Aparently, Georgia did something that made Russia attack. This is what is being said in countries BESIDE the US.

Unless we all decide to be stupid, we're not apart of that 'war'.

The world isn't in unlimited turmoil right now. Yes, we're under stress, but what else is new. This isn't Russia turning back into the Soviet Union, like in the Simpsons. The only way we can go into war is if the entire country keeps beliving that Russia is actually going berserk.

And Germany isn't going to do crap.

Well, back then we practiced two things that we don't today: Neutrality, and Appeasement. And no offense to my country, but we're re-opening old wounds with Russia by putting missles this close. We need whoever will be in power to sit down with Putin and Medvedev with several others in the room to discuss these issues. We don't want a repeat of the Munich conference.

This sounds like it's leading to another "Cuban Missile crisis"-type incident

I feel that Russia won't defend itself unless severely needed. and I don't think the we, in the US, will push that hard.

EDIT: I should also add, when I read this thread, every cell in my body screamed no… But I feel I should atleast touch the subject with my POV.

Even though I think your a cool member Strongbad, I'm gonna have to also say NO, and don't wish for this kinda stuff to happen, do you know what the state of the world would be left in if a War World III happen, with the current tech. and weapons we have now….....!:blink:

I know Georgia started it but I've heard Russia hasn't exactly been kind. I read a few articles on Yahoo that they've got some Georgian soldiers as prisoners and that Russia has targeted civilians in Georgia. That's not protecting anyone. Plus Russia didn't have that much of a reason to retaliate. South Ossetia isn't part of Russia even though they're considered Russians because most of them have Russian passports(I read that on Wiki). But I don't know much I guess. Also Devilfruitgrower, my dad said the same thing about this being just like the missle crisis. It'll either turn out like that or all out war. Just seems to me that the Russian goverment has been rather cocky lately. Same with the US and China.

Edit: Captain Brooke, I guess the world would be pretty much screwed if a war starts but I just can't help but feel tensions are so high lately, someone's gonna start a war. I just know it.

Well after thinking about it, I realize Russia probably won't do anything. They should know an attack on Poland would not be wise. It's kinda like Iran and how their president keeps saying he wants to destroy Israel but he hasn't done anything. Still anything could happen. WWI proves that. It was set off by the assassination archduke Ferdinand. The death of 1 man and his wife set off an entire war. Well ok, tensions between the countries of Europe had been building up for years and they decided to use the death as an excuse to fight eachother but it's still what launched it.

Why hello there, Im from Russia. How things actually is: Georgia ATTACKED South Asetia, bombed their main city and stuff, killed thousands of people. Around 50% population of Georgia are Russian and around 80% population os Asetia are Russian. Ugh, I don't care what kind of war it is, but the world DOES NOT need another one. If putting missiles/rockets/whatever is going to start another one, then get them away from Poland! As for the "defend Poland from Iran" excuse, why the hell would they attack Poland directly? Okay that was a dumb question, but I doubt Poland is in major need of a defense system from the US.

In all seriousness, Georgia overreacted, and Russia's follow up has caused more tension and not less. Even though a global-scale war might be the shot in the arm current world economic conditions need, the human cost of fixing the world money market is always too much for too little return.

Also you guys need to remember EU isn't a country. EU is a big and complex trade union of a lots of different countries disagree with each others in pretty much everything. If there would be a war, if there would be that is, EU would probably quickly fall apart.

And not all Europeans hate Americans .

Well seeing as how Poland is a part of both Nato and the ESDP they would most likely end up on the same side in defending one of their own. But really its just Russia showing of and trying to make its prescense felt on the world stage again. Theyd have to be insane to try such a thing as war for real.

But seriously, I'm starting to get that the American news isn't being impartial like they should be. They've been making Russia look like the bad guy but I realize it's Georgia. We should be on Russia's side but I suppose the Bush administration wants to start a new cold war. I've often heard war is more profitable than peace for the government and big business.

I don´t think the Russians are dumb enough to nuke anybody - they know that around another 5 countries have nukes.They´d do perhaps some conventional warfare,but even that isn´t probable - at least I hope it isn´t…

I thought that would start when China invades India to steal their women, since their birth control policies have combined negatively with patriarchal social customs to produce a population with practically no women. The problem exists, to a slightly lesser extent, in India as well, so the millions-strong Red Army will then set its sights on a re-militarizing Russia. At what point, if any, nuclear arms are brought into play, I care not to guess.

don't think war is upon you just like that. Diplomacy is a big issue. Such as there is that europe is dependant on Russia for like 80% of there gasneeds, lies way to cloes to russia to get into an all out war and the United States is still not over the financial nightmare that was the Iraq and Afghanistan "desert storm"-alikes. In stead of making money, these wars have created a crash. Then there is the question of oil and of sides to pick. I don't know if you've noticed but unlike the USA, The EU hasn't got a government, only a parliament and that only has an advisery function so it has no say in what other countries will do. Like Switserland that undoubtedly will remain "neutral" like in all wars and countries like poland, bulgaria and checz republic that have a certain mostly voilant history with Russia will have a tough choice picking sides and that choice will lay mostly with the government of those countries whom are, many times, still friendly with Russia. This will keep Europe devided. Like the wall all over again or the iron crtain for that matter. So there is too much at stake to just start a war. Governments do not take this lightly, also not Russia. They might have invaded Georgia for there own reaaons, be they just or not, but that was NOT to declare a war against the US at all, it was a regional conflict about territory and the Russians are VERY territorial which is logical seeing how much land they allready have had to give up after WWII. They probably woulnd't have guessed to get that much attention but too many where killed shamefully enough. They even chose a strategic time with all eyes on beijing right now. This allows the diplomatic machine to start running full throttle withoutmany interference of the press.
Thats just my thaughts though

I'd think it would be more likely for the communist government to forcibly change the customs (like one daughter in every family) rather than invade another country.

Nah I think if Obama gets into office, US relations with the rest of the world might get a bit better. Though even if nothing changes, I don't see the rest of the world attacking us unless we attack a neutral country or an ally country. Not even Bush would do something like that. He did invade Iraq but they weren't allies or neutral. He also used 9/11 to further his agenda. He knew we'd be so angry that we'd let him do anything. I suppose further thought into the subject could lead one to think that there was a conspiracy but I won't go that far. Anyway don't I see any big war against America in the future. I could see something happening with Iran though. Their president is really crazy.
