Someone in my family got hit twice with identity theft, now all her money has been taken. Anyone go through a similar experience? How does AP's polity protect itself from thieves?
Identity theft.

Well for one thing, this forum has a special filter that censors out sensitive information like credit card numbers. They just become little asterisks, so we're safer than you think.
Check it out, heres my credit card number:

Don't forget the expiration date:

Give it try, its freaking flawless.

I can see it. -
Hahaha, I remember when people still thought that really worked.
It was cute.

xDD One of my friends got owned by that once.

..?? All I see are asterisks…?
...
Anyway, I should have said how do people protect their info in general. I don't know how these people manage to obtain identity information online, especially when there's so much fake stuff seeded all over the place. How to tell the real deal?

Hahaha, nice try.
My Mom did go through a similar experience several months ago. Hundreds of dollars were taken out of her account, we couldn't find out from who, we thought someone tapped her account somehow. Turns out, it was DirecTV!
We had DirecTV in Ohio, but we got it disconnected when we movied down to Tennessee and then got Comcast. DirecTV said everything was taken care of, that there was no payments leftover, no fees, nothing. Well, months later they decided to take money from her account. They claim they had nothing in their system stating our service was terminated, and after months of no payment, they took what they could out of her account.
Needless to say this was bullshit, my mom worked with her bank and got her money back as well as blocking all access to her account from DirecTV. Not soon after that my mom switched banks. No problem since.
In short, have her talk to her bank.

Terek, he was playing a joke on you. It was just asterisks he typed. Check the source code if you don't believe me.
Honestly, there's no REAL way to know you're totally safe when browsing. However, make sure that the sites are legit; the easiest way is looking for sites starting with https: as opposed to http:; the s stands for secure. Also, check the coding of the site (using Firefox; I'm sure there's an IE add-on for it as well). If it looks fake or like it ridirects your info to a third-party site, don't fill out any forms or anything else. It's probably bogus.

…. my friend makes $100 a month filling out bogus surveys :)
I dont know why he hasnt been hit yet

There's this thing called common sense that keeps me reasonably secure while I'm online.
Also layers upon layers of fake information.

I figured it might be, but was thrown off by Deltron's remark.

I don't think any money was taken because of info imputed online, because no one in my family except by Dad actually orders over the internet. I personally suspect it had something to do with a debit card.

My boss had her ATM card swiped and copied twice. Apparently it happens very commonly in gas stations. They install devices that read your card and record you pin number. It's safe to use the credit function, or of course, even safer to pay cash.

I have had Visa stolen the old school way. You know, somebody took my card and used it. That thing left some emotional scars on me :ermm:.
But I never had experienced an identity theft and and I don't even know anybody who would had. I do online shopping pretty extensively though. I would think a little bit common sense now and then would keep you safe from stuff like this. Although there are a lot of clever bricks out there.

Apparently, my mom's information was stolen through some fake eBay thing or something, I don't really remember.
The result of it all seems to be our city doesn't exist according to eBay anymore, and I can't make an account there.
