Anime Coloring vs. Your Coloring

Whenever I see a character in the anime, they typically have a color scheme I expect. However, there are a few examples where the coloring scheme is completely different than what I expect. This thread is about listing examples when a color scheme was different than how you imagined that character to be in color.

When I was a casual OP reader, only reading the manga from Shonen Jump, I originally thought Nami's hair was blonde instead of orange.
I imagined Oz as having a grayish blue or maybe grayish green skin color. When he appeared colored on the volumes, he was an orange color, which was a bit surprising, but not too much of a shock. But when he appeared red in the anime, it was completely different than I thought it would be.
On the other hand, I imagined Kuma as having the anime's coloring scheme, and the manga's (with the orange vest) still seems awkward to me.

Well, I started out watching the anime, so I knew the colorings for a lot of characters ahead of time. However, there were a couple in TB.

I imagined Gecko Moria having black hair, red clothes, and pale yellow skin.

I imagined Oz being pale green.

I imagined Perona having blonde hair, and dark clothing.

Like you Moria, I have trouble imagining Kuma's shirt being orange. I still imagine him with his anime color scheme.

That's about it so far.

Oh, yeah, I also thought that Hogback had white skin, but in the anime it's normal (still imagine him with white skin though)

And when I became a OP fan, most characters were colored already one way or another so that's why most of the color scheme's haven't surprised me either (except Nami because I never saw her in a color page until the anime).

The only one that came as a real surprise to me was Moria's color scheme; I imagined him to have black hair and light red skin

Seems like a few people were surprised by Moria's color tone, but he actually looked like I thought except for the hair, which I thought would be black and not purple.

Mr.4's hair. I expected it to be black like in the manga, so it being blonde came out of nowhere.

It also seems awkward to me how Kuma's vest in the manga is orange, blue suits him more.

I wasn't really surprised by Moria's color scheme, but I didn't expect Luffy to have red shorts, or yellow top.

Also, I thought Helmeppo's hair would be pink, and Coby's blonde.. I'm not even kidding. Lmao. Oh, and I wanted Garp to have black hair :/ haha

I thought it was blond in the manga…

I also never expected Buggy to have blue hair or Zoro to have green hair (but I never thought about what their hair colors would be so I adapted to it really quick)

the only shocker for me would be Oz. I expected his skin to just be plain white (not like Caucasian actually white)

Me too. I always thought that she would be like a Misa clone but good thing that she wasn't. It was a very pleasant surprise.

I've never understood why Kuma's shirt was inked in black if it was intended to be orange. Thus, I like the anime's coloring more, as he looks more like a priest with the black outfit and the bible.

Wasn't Zoro's Skypiea tanktop a different color in the manga? Like green or pink or something? I like the anime's blue more.

As for Odz I thought he would be all gray and dead looking. Though the red and pink muscles works too.

I was dissapointed that Sanji's Thriller Bark outfit had a blue shirt again. I expected it to be black or red or something different, but oh well. I thought Ryuuma would have a green robe and black scarf, though I like his anime colors better. And I never thought Odz would be red or that Hogback would wear purple. Luffy's new colors were a surprise, though I prefer his normal colors to his Thriller Bark colors. Perona was like I thought she would be, though I thought she'd be blonde. And though it's not a character, Zoro's new sword was a very pleasant surprise, color-wise. I expected it just to be black and white! Everything else was either close to what I thought it would be, or I saw it in color first.

Oz and Kuma were the most wtf to me. I had thought Oz was gonna be anything but pink. I didnt really know what, but pink?? Im used to it now but back before i knew the coloring thats the one thing i woulda never thought.

And Kuma i thought his outfit was black like in the anime, i like that better than orange. There are some more but those were the biggest

Also, to the original poster: Odz wasn't orange on the volume cover, he was red/pink just like in the anime. You must have saw a very poor quality image.

As for me, I imagined all the characters in Thriller Bark (including Perona, Absalom, and Hogback) to be zombies, and thus have blue skin. Turns out I was very wrong.

Im worried that the Supernova's will have mess up coloring.But I think they will be right on with Kizaru.

I think Kuma in Black is better then Kuma in Orange.Kuma in black looks like a preist along with the bible.But orange…....That doesn't really go well with me.

That wasn't a portable game with Caimie. That was One Piece: Oceans Dream for the Playstation, the filler arc Rainbow Mist was based off the game. It later gave birth to a portable version for the GBA, One Piece: Dragon Dream (Caimie doesn't make an appearance in it); which is a game I LOVE and wish someone would make an English patch for it. Or better, FUNimation can bring it over with a DS port just like the Phoenix Wright games went from GBA to DS. Dragon Dream's format would work perfectly for DS.

It was also my first real exposure to the original One Piece, as I was looking to make a One Piece world in a video game and needed graphics at the angle the game users, this was August 2005 after being an off an on fan of the 4kids dub, the game led to me making that world, and that world led me to join this very forum to advertise it.

I thought Ryuuma would have mossy green skin and orange hair.

I thought Moria would have light green skin, black hair, and black clothes.

I thought Perona would be blonde with black and cream yellow clothing, sort of like Misa from Death Note.

Well, I'm sure my predictions for the Supernovas will be off too.

As for Kuma - am I the only one who LOVES his ORANGE west? O_____o Black makes him look very boring and all blargh in my opinion, orange suits the Bear just fine.
I HATE Robins blue anime eys D: Eeeeew!!! Also - she had RED pants in Skypea and RED dress in TB, why does anime make her look all purple-addict? Im praying for Shakky to have dark-blue or dark-violet hair, I want to cosplay, and with my own hair, too!

Al!naJames doesn't like variety. She'd prefer if everyone was constantly from the same area and not getting too much sun despite them being on a ship 24/7. Also, the reason the anime puts Robin in purple so much is cause purple is Robin's color, as depicted by Oda.

I just hate it when fanartists draw Usopp with a black skin (as they think he looks in anime) while ACTUALLY he has the SAME skin colour as Nami or Sanji or anybody else :/

Nothing is wrong with black skin, the wrong thing is making colours different from AUTHOR`S. It is same for me for the skin, eyes or clothing colours.

I'm hoping that they redo Kuma's coloring to the Orange. I'd like to see that. Also, Oz's color came to a complete shock to me. I never onced imagined red skin and hair that color.

EDIT: After re-examining Usopp, his skin is a little bit darker than Nami's or Sanji's. Just a bit.

They made Mr. 1, Blackbeard, Gedatsu, Yassop, and AoKiji dark-skinned too.

Do you find these changes wrong as well?

I find every change of Odas original colour wrong - especially if it is done AFTER Oda realised a colouring image of a character. And as I said that doesnt only goes to skin - I have NOTHING against dark/white/yellow skin, whatever - it goes for everything.
Oda`s colouring off = blah for me.

oz came as a complete surprise to me too, the second i saw the red skin and the hair i was just like "WTF" in my mind, and moria's color scheme was completely a surprise to me too, i thought he had black hair, and something other than candy corn colored pants, and for some reason i never saw ace's shoes as black, i always thought they'd be dark blue or purple.

What do you mean "however"? This is a manga so it can be just black or white. By that logic everything that is black in the manga should be black or dark brown in the anime too.

The point I'm trying to make is that the manga was misleading. When something is inked in like that, it usually denotes a dark color. As you can see in the anniversary poster (which came out quite a while after Kuma's first appearance), he's colored a lighter color with would normally be denoted with tone or just no inking in grayscale. I'm guessing that the anime people saw the ink, saw the bible, and jumped to the logical conclusion that his shirt was black.

Or maybe Oda changed his mind, and kept the ink for the sake of consistancy. Either way, the unassuming reader would probably think he was wearing a different color than what the poster shows.

I understand your point. However Toei has shown in the past that they don't necessarily let themselves get influenced by the darker manga tones. The first example that popps into my mind is Lulu's shirt. Need to do a little thinking about the rest.
