WHAT'S TO COME
Lost boss Damon Lindelof attended the excellent Juan-Manuel Rocha-hosted Comics on Comics event at Meltdown on Sunset tonight. He offered the assembled crowd several very interesting insights about the future of Lost.
VOTE NO ON MIDI-CHLORIANS: Damon gave us a sense of what kind of Lost questions will be answered, and which other mysteries won't explicitly be explained by the end of the series: "There are certain questions about the show that I'm very befuddled by like, 'What is the Island?' or 'What do the numbers mean?' We're going to be explaining a little more about the numbers, maybe significantly more about the numbers, but what do you mean by 'What do the numbers mean?' What is a potential answer to that question? I feel like you have to be very careful about entering into midi-chlorian territory…I grew up on Star Wars, I've seen the Star Wars movies hundreds of times, I can recite them chapter and verse, and never once did anyone ever say to me or did it occur to me to say, 'What is the Force, exactly? Can you explain that for me, better than Alec Guinness does?' I understand, 'When are we going to find out about Libby?' That's a very finite question. 'Who is Jacob?' OK, yes, we've been talking to this guy named Jacob, so those questions then should have answers, but 'What is the Island?' That starts to get into 'What is the Force?' It is a place. I can't explain to you why it moves through space-time, it just does. You have to accept the fact that it does." Can you live with that?
SURVEY SAYS, ZZZT! WRONG ANSWER: Regarding the approaching final season and possible fan reaction to the accompanying reveals, Damon says, "There isn't a perfect way to end the show, but the end inevitably approaches and so the show has to start answering more and more questions. To me the greatest thing about Lost, just in terms of writing it, was that [over the years] the show could ask a question, and everyone [watching] could say 'Here's what I think the answer to that is.' And next year we're basically going to spend the entire season telling you you're wrong. 'Here's the actual answer to that question.' And you're going to say, 'S–t, my answer was actually much better.' " Have you been satisfied or displeased with the answers we've gotten so far?
HOW IT ENDS: Just as an insight into Damon's mind (and thus a pointer to possible plans for the Lost series ender), you might be interested to know that the MAS*H finale is Damon's all-time favorite series conclusion.
MORE SERIES FINALE CLUES: Damon says that when the show ends, "All of the character resolutions will be very defined. There is going to be no cut to black. The show for me and Carlton [Cuse] and J.J. [Abrams] and all the people writing it—it's not about the Island. The Island is where it takes place. It's about this group of people who crashed on the Island on Sept. 22, 2004, and how they influenced the history of the Island in some ways and had a very significant and pivotal role to play there. You're going to see that role play out, and their fates will all be resolved by the end of the series—that's the story that we're telling. In terms of every little bit of minutiae about the Island itself…there will be questions after the show [ends]."
LIBBY SAYS HI: Libby's story will not be wrapped up on the show. Says Damon, "I have learned that if you kill someone off the show, they are less likely to cooperate with you." Basically, Cynthia Watros is busy until further notice and they can't explain Libby without her, at least not in any way that shows her story rather than annoyingly tells her story. What's the takeaway for us fans? Next time you've got Damon cornered, don't waste your breath asking about Libby. Instead, bust his chops about another very important blonde: Claire! Where is that little minx, anyway?
THE SUM IS 108: This one goes out to all the Lostpedians out there. Damon said, "Here's the story with numbers. The Hanso Foundation that started the Dharma Initiative hired this guy Valenzetti to basically work on this equation to determine what was the probability of the world ending in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Valenzetti basically deduced that it was 100 percent within the next 27 years, so the Hanso Foundation started the Dharma Initiative in an effort to try to change the variables in the equation so that mankind wouldn't wipe it itself out." This information, in more convoluted form, was leaked out via the online games rather than explained on the show itself, says Damon, because, "That would be the worst thing ever. We have to make the show for the hardcore fans who care about the numbers, but we also have to make it for my mom, who just wants Sawyer to take his shirt off."
SO THERE: While discussing Wolverine and the role of canon in comic adaptations, Damon said, "At the end of the day, you can do anything you want [as a storyteller] so long as it's cool." Certainly applies to Lost too, don't you think?
Some interesting stuff particularly the Dharma info.

Yea… Locke's gone all God-hunter mode on us, and that's scary...
-
My absolute favorite visual in the entire episode was Ben and Richard in the same shot, standing there speechless. It's so envigorating to see these two characters who always seem to have the answers and talk in purposeful vagueness to suddenly have no idea what the hell is going on.
Good job.
-
Man so pumped for season finale
Hopefully Locke doesn't mess things up, he has a habit of messing things up when he's on a roll.
Feel so bad for Sawyer and Juliet, Kate always screws things up for them.
Definitely A+ episode, hopefully season finale will be A++++ episode. -
The Lost season finale is tonight, and it's….......

I'm just shaking with excitement, too! I know we can't expect to see all old mysteries solved. But dammit, I hope we finally see who Jacob is, or if Locke really kills him.
-
! Whoa! Jacob! Shit hits right from the start. And the statue!
-
! Whoa! Jacob! Shit hits right from the start. And the statue!
! Yeah, that part surprised the shit out of me! At first, I thought that it would be someone familiar like Locke. And I call that ship being the Black Rock
-
! Ah, and Jacob saw Kate as a kid. I'm guessing he met all the Lostees at some point in their lives.
! EDIT: Ah crap. What's in the Ark of the Covenant…er, I mean the big metal box. -
! And apparantly, Jacob has the power to make people never age.
! I'm more interested in where the story with Frank and the Ajira guys is gonna lead. -
! Vincent?! Oh, and Rose and Bernard? LOL, guess they didn't forget about them after all.
-
! I've never really cared about Rose and Bernard, but I'm glad that they weren't killed when they were still back in the 50's.
! The more flashbacks we see with Jacob, the more I wanna know. I mean, I was expecting to find out about him, but didn't expect to see so much of him.Edit: Lol
! Sawyer kicked Jack in the nuts!
-
! Well, there goes Juliet. Sucks
Also, so much for that bomb.
-
OHMFGBQ~!1 Fucking Christ this is unbelievable.
-
! Oh shit! Dead Locke in the box? Total mindfuck. What the hell's going on?
-
And now….we wait.......until next year.
-
Holy shit! That was one of the best Lost season finales ever! Oh god, 2010 can't come soon enough.
-
Worst season finale ever, in fact as a standalone episode it ranks as one of the worst to me.
The only part I found interesting in the whole episode was Locke's body being in the box. That's it.
-
I just wonder what Greg's gonna have to say to all of this?
I couldn't believe my eyes when Locke burnt Jacob alive after Ben stabbed him. I mean, I knew that he planned to kill him, but didn't see the bit coming when he kicked him into the hearth.
-
Someone on another forum wrote pretty much what I think:
The episode itself as-is sucked. The flashbacks were absolutely beyond pointless. The Bram and Ilana storyline we see now was beyond pointless (where's the war? Was their entire madman scheme just to haul a deadbody in a metal crate for no reason? Couldn't they have just carried it?)
And we won't know why Jacob was killed or the consequences of the bomb going off until next season.
So… the episode as-is is poor or awful. But maybe next season will make everything make sense and boost it up to ok or great. So I won't vote.
But my reaction is poor or awful.
-
Your opinion is horrible.
The flashbacks were not pointless, all of them were touched by Jacob. Juliet was not, thus why she is going to be the sacrifice to get the Oceanic passengers back to 2007.
the crate was obviously a tool to keep the suspense.
I dont care what anyone says, that episode was amazing. Starting from the Jacob/Older man and Ben/Widmore parallels, the landing of the Black Rock, the full view of the statue, Jacob's "touch", "Ricardus", Jack vs Sawyer, and the fucking cliffhanger. That's not even everything, but that episode was top notch.
-
I agree that the finale was underwhelming in some parts. Jacob's flashbacks about meeting the Oceanic survivors seemed a bit unnecessary at first. But, they made sense afterwards. My favorites were him spotting the ship, and when he talks Hurley into returning to the island.
Another loose end that Darlton is probably waiting for to use next season, is Claire. We haven't seen her all season, and I think it would be nice for her and Jack to finally reunite, and see her son again.
-
I agree the finale was far from decent in comparison to previous season finales.
hated how quickly they killed jacob.
can't wait to see what the Egyptian God Sobek has to do with the island.
Hated that there was no Desmond.
and btw if Sayid survives that gunshot wound I'm going to be very very pissed that Faraday didn't survive his…
-
Seems like my hunch that there are 2 factions, one good and one evil on the island was right.
What doesn't mean of course that it is good and evil, but at least they are opposites, let's say black and white - Jacob being dressed in white in the beginning and his friend in black. So Locke did have a meaningless life , I feel sad for him if that's the end of him.
Maybe he lives further in the new locke, because it seems Jacob and co are like deities, who need a dead body to be represented on earth!!We'll see the answers to all these mysteries a year from now , pfiew that will be painfull.
-
I loved it. Great drama. Then again I'm not one of those silly billy fans who thinks a good episode is a list of new facts.
-
Yeah I thought it was a great episode only problem was Jacob dying, that's of course if he is really dead. Also ROSE AND BERNARD!!!!! awesomes lol
EDIT: ZZZZZ Locke, how could they, most disappointing part =_= -
My word, I don't know what to say. Every finalé always resets the playing field, but this…wow. Next year can't come soon enough!!
-
Man FFFFFUUUUU.. sif wait so long
NEED MOAR LOSTTTTT
Lets hope the last season will finish off with style and with a bang!
Hopefully answering ALL questions (but I doubt it, they probably will leave some ambiguous and let us interpret it) ARGHH!!!@ -
The only part I found interesting in the whole episode was Locke's body being in the box. That's it.
Wow.
Complete opposite of me.
The moment they showed Frank the contents I guessed it was Locke.
When 'Locke' and Ben were in the tunnel, I figured out who Ben was.
So that 'big' reveal was ho-hum.
Everything else I loved.
Well, I also guessed the season would end with a flash. Which was nice since they had me fooled for a second but the moment we saw Juliet in the hole alive, you knew.
The flashbacks were absolutely beyond pointless.
Couldn't disagree more.
Seeing Jacob interact with them at extremely formulative moments in their lives, in some cases even saving them, was very cool. Then again, I've always loved the character driven moments over any reveals. It's the one thing I felt was missing this season as we steamplowed through story.
Yes. I know it will always be an endless war "STORY PROGRESSION VS PLODDING MINUTE CHARACTER STUDY" and I can't say anything bad about people who want a story to move along, but for me, Lost is at its best when it doesn't give a fuck what others think about progression.
I picked out the exact moments of who, where and when of Jack and Sawyer's flashbacks within mere seconds and that was a great feeling. In fact, I haven't enjoyed that aspect of LOST in a long time, "HOLY FUCK! JACK'S GONNA COUNT TO FIVE!", my wife's jaw drops 30 seconds later, "HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT?"
Because I've seen season 1 twenty times bitches. No really.
No, really.
And we won't know why Jacob was killed or the consequences of the bomb going off until next season.
????
What show was that jackass watching?
No wait. If that kind of thing pisses him/her off, then why are they still watching AFTER FIVE YEARS!?
"We won't know what's in the hatch until next season."
"We won't know what's going to happen to Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sawyer and if Eko or Desmond are alive or not until next season!"
"We won't know why Jack's off the island and why he wants to get back until next season!"
"We won't know why Locke was dead or how they get back to the island until next season! And where the fuck did the island go???"
I mean Jesus Christ you dumb shit! What the fuck did you think they were going to do with the SEASON FINALE? EXPLAIN EVERYTHING!? Sorry. I have no issue with people criticizing story progression, lack of surprise or techniques, but to BITCH LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER ABOUT CLIFFHANGERS IN A SHOW THAT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A SUCCESSION OF CLIFFHANGERS!!????? Go watch Heroes you stupid shit.
And I don't mean you Runa.
HOWEVER
As Lost season finales go, this was the weakest of the bunch. A shame. While the above dumb-fuck was left mystified by the few points, I don't find them merely as interesting or cliff-hangerish as previous years only because…we don't have much to imagine.
GRANTED IN THE LOG RUN THIS IS A GOOD THING.
It's February 2010.
You're sitting down for the beginning of the end.
You tune into Lost.
You have NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT'S GOING TO TRANSPIRE.
Awesome.
But still, it comes off as somewhat ho-hum for the time being.
I was most impressed that they came up with semi-believable IN CHARACTER motivations for the characters to make the crazy-ass decisions that they did. I believed them all up until Kate suddenly agreed with Jack.
Sorry no.
Didn't buy that. But kudos to the Juliet motivation to stop Sawyer. Totally in character.
Worst character of the season: Sun.
"Where's Jin!"
repeat
Poor actress.
Seriously. However much Charlie was underused in Season 3, it paled in comparison to poor Sun this season.
The finale did manage to do something Lost hasn't stirred in me in a while though.
Tears.
When Sun pulled the ring out of the crib, boy. The memories just came flooding (HAH) back and I was all bleary-eyed.
Then of course Juliet's grip with Sawyer.
That poor girl.
She's been shat on her ENTIRE life. Yet she still does things out of the good of her heart for others.
Her life was as much a tragedy as the play.
-
meh. For me, Lost would turn from one of the most exciting TV series into one of the most ridiculous, if everything has been some kind of war between ancient, Egyptian gods who have healing powers and look like ginger milksops. ( which is seemingly the case atm ). Fuck that, seriously :getlost:
-

I've been saying since Season 3 I think the island is home to deities, the origin of humanity and the one true religion which is an amalgamation of all religious beliefs.
So if I could have guessed that since before the halfway point in the series (if it's right) it wouldn't be all that ridiculous now would it?
Maybe you don't like it, that's another issue entirely, but it certainly isn't 'ridiculous'.
-
When I saw that opening scene, I began to think: "Are these two Egyptian heirs fighting for a throne?" But who knows. I'm beginning to think Widmore is just a pawn as Benny boy.
-
Widmore is a pawn. I knew that the moment we learned he was a young man on the island. He has nothing to do with the 'good' people or 'bad' people. He's in the same boat as Ben. He just wants on the island.
Last night the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' became very clear.
One side has faith in humanity and believes in the good.
Another side doesn't and can only see the ugliness.
Draw from that which you think might be 'good' or 'bad'.
Also….
Isn't it strange as fuck to have a statue just staring its ass off out to sea? Especially one that's a 'wife' of another god? I wonder if they've got a Jaya thing goin' on there.
BTW...
Did anyone else notice that we more or less got the 'Zombie Season'? Technically speaking ^O^
AND HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I JUST REALIZED THIS SECOND I'M SO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! So Christian really is Jacob's doppleganger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not that I know the rules but then who or what the hell did Ben kill!!!????
-

Your funny. If you are going to build a statue of that size, where are you going to face it? Inland? Probably not. The statue could have been used as a lighthouse, or a warning.
I am pretty sure that Sobek was not a wife to another god.
Sobek was a repairer of evil that had been done. Sobek in some myths was also seen as a creator God, linked to Ra. Sobek also came to symbolize the produce of the Nile and the fertility that it brought to the land.
Take from that what you will.
-
Your funny.
Does that mean you're a needlessly sarcastic twit?

Egyptian art, momenuments and figures are well known for their symetry and placement of objects/figures in relation to one another. Hence my conjecture.
That's so goddamn funny.
However
I was under the impression that the figure was that of Taweret (the ears and feminine figure and hair present the first time we saw it, I was too busy screaming my ass off to take note of details on the first run through the finale) who was in fact the wife of a god (or two) hence my belief that she might have been constructed as part of a pair.
But since the evidence is overwhelming that it's Sobek, that would seem totally wrong.
-
Does that mean you're a needlessly sarcastic twit?

First off I was being sincere about you being funny in regards to your post as a whole…
Secondly, yes, I'm very well aware of that. But when you asked "isn't it strange as fuck to have a statue just staring its ass off out to sea?" you implied that it was strange for the statue to be looking out sea, but really were else would it look out on. The Island itself? a duh, of course it's going to be looking out to the sea.
What you may not considered is what the statue was originally looking at when it was first built. But since the island has been moved, wether ot not it's still pointing to the same place remains to be seen.
-
I have a feeling that the next season will be focused on the "War" that Widmore mentioned to Locke. But, one thing's for sure: Whatever happens, I'm sure it'll completely throw me off…in a good way. I'm speculating what'll happen in the next season once the finale ends, and when the trailer comes, I'm always thinking "Holy shit! I was way off!" That'll most likely be the case this time around.
-
Man, am I the only one who gets scared as piss every time he watchs that wide shot of the side view of the statue? I sure hope not, as it's pretty overwhelming.
-
First off I was being sincere about you being funny in regards to your post as a whole…
I totally apologize. You'll have to understand my sarcasm detector after years of dealing with online forums is starting to show age.
What you may not considered is what the statue was originally looking at when it was first built. But since the island has been moved, wether ot not it's still pointing to the same place remains to be seen.
Which is exactly why I said:
I wonder if they've got a Jaya thing goin' on there.

Greg, that guy isn't an idiot, you just aren't seeing things from his perspective. I've got a long reply for that…but not until I watch the office.
-
So i finally got to see my long awaited "Saywer kicking Jack's ass" scene. How satisfying!
-
Greg, that guy isn't an idiot
You're right I apologize.
He's a complete waste of sperm.
No matter how you look at it, this ending is exactly the ending we've come to expect.
It answers some things and presents more questions.
What it doesn't do is give a clear direction for the next season. Which has never happened before. But that's a positive thing.
If Darlton didn't know what they were doing, I'd be worried. But clearly that isn't the case. They didn't just fade to white and use the time off to figure out what the hell to do. They have an idea and a purpose. In the past we've had hints about that purpose.
Here anything can happen.
The game has completely changed. As indicated by the white ending with black lettering.
-
I know, I loved that whole contrast of the white background and black lettering as opposed to the usual black background and white lettering. I think some serious sh*t is really gonna happen next season (…well, obviously)
The way I see it either things'll pick up exactly where they left off with no change despite Juliet setting off the bomb or perhaps we'll see that they did in fact change the past/future but they still have some connection to the island.
-
! So Christian really is Jacob's doppleganger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not that I know the rules but then who or what the hell did Ben kill!!!????
I think it is just the opposite and that he's the blackshirt's , remember ilana saying , this cabin has been used by someone else (an impostor) for a long time now.
What I really think (just a theory) is that Jacob will live further in our losties, hence the Jacob touched-you-moments - He just passed down part of his "power", part of himself, to them and they will be, after the incident (after their death?) the leaders of the white movement. That's why Jacob said at the end : "they are coming", he was talking about our losties.
-
Greg after seasons of reading your posts, I think I'm finally beginning to appreciate how much lost you've watched. I agree about the Christian thing.
But again, I have to ask, is Charlie (Penny's son) Charlie (dead musician)?
Hurley has his Guitar which Jacob kept, and now Sun found his ring. It seems like his role isn't done.. maybe that is just wishful thinking. The Locke thing was pretty surprising to me, I think I spoiled myself when I read some comments about the smoke monster being him before I downloaded the episode, but I still liked the idea and thought I would have been surprised if I hadn't read that.
The finale needed more Desmond however. So now what? Did they press reset or did they cause the incident?
Ok, so I just thought about this a little and I may be disappointed by season 6. If this is just a god-battle and everyone has been pawns, this will be a kind of twist like Hancock that turns me off. See when Jacob says "What about you?" To Ben, that was kind of important not so much because it's Ben, but because it's Jacob saying it. Supposedly there is no good and evil, which i am inclined to believe that means there is more evil than good (or at least the gods are more self-serving than caring for their human pawns).
In which case: Hurley is cursed, and it's not dead people he sees, just Jacob pretending to be dead friends so that Hurley can do his bidding.
Miles probably can't hear dead people, just the other force's (Smoke monster/"bad guy") whispers probably like Eko.
Anyone that is dead: means dead, unless the 2 forces intervene. There is no time loophole that is keeping people alive. In general, it would make this a story about a bunch of servants of a deity having no control over their lives, throwing out all the science, and focusing on what their daily sevices to their respective deity entails. Which further down the road (in 10 years) will make lost a show that is remembered for its ridiculous ending (much like Hancock).
-
Just thought I'd let everyone know that, according to Wikipedia, Richard's response to "what lies in the shadow of the statue" is Ille qui nos omnes servabit, which is Latin for "He who will watch over us all." Take that for what you will.
-
Mugiwara, I LOVE your idea. It's awesome. Personally, I've really been pushing for Un-Christian to be a good guy though. Ever since we knew something funky was going on with him.
Mainly because I like to root for a villain that isn't really a villain. They're tough characters to create, well, tough to carry out I should say.
It's easy to make someone a prick, but it's tough to make them a prick for the right reasons. So I really hope the Ajira folk were just in the dark about the switchover and that Christian is Jacob BUT I like your idea better.
-
Awesome finale and like 10000 more questions , I cant wait 7 months until next episode . J.J. Abrams is like Oda of tv shows.
-
Can we just call Antijacob Esau? Most likely this will be his name.
I hope when the Incident 7 (Jack, Sawyer, Hurley, Miles, Kate, Sayid and Jin) come back from the past, they come back a little more enlightened, similar to Locke.
I have a theory that what the flashbacks were, were actually flash forwards. When the white light occurred, everyone touched by Jacob skipped back in time creating a time loop. However, Jacob's touch and intervention made sure that what happened, will always happen. Jacob is the constant and the course corrector. NO MATTER WHAT they will crash on the island. However, something about this time line will change. The Incident 7, after the Oceanic 6 return to the Island, will appear in 2007 again. Jacob has no control over the Island anymore, and he was the one who sent the Oceanic 6 (minus Sun, because if Sun had gone to 1977, Jin wouldn't have done what he needed to do, which was assist in the coming Incident) but Jacob did not plan on Esau's intervention, thus making Esau a variable in Jacob's plan. Eloise and Widmore are Esau's pawns. Juliet was also a variable, because Ben does not matter, so why should Juliet? She was never touched by Jacob, meaning he didn't know she would also be there, and the bomb would never have detonated with out her, changing what the Incident was.
I'm sure there's plenty of flaws with that theory, but take it as you will.
